Dirty Deeds!

"Dirty Deeds" is a series of threads where a discussion can be held about the morally questionable, or outright evil acts of characters in comics. It might be a discussion about times a hero crossed a moral line they shouldn't have, or a discussion of a villain's most horrific acts in their history, but the premise remains the same.

Where possible, a poll will be included to vote upon said character's "dirtiest deed".

Please do remember that there are no wrong answers, this is all a matter of opinion. Since everyone has a different set of morals, please try and respect differences in people's own beliefs.

And now, it’s the forty-ninth Dirty Deeds thread, where we’re going to go ahead and take a look at the more reprehensible actions of a member of Alpha Flight. He’s pompous, he’s temperamental, and he was nice to Nurse Annie! Here and now, we’re looking into the Dirty Deeds of the first out of the closet gay superhero known as…

Jean-Paul Beaubier…
Northstar!!!

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_IBmku1-HI8Q/SO08_npxG_I/AAAAAAAAG0k/13X1IRiYU5Q/s400/northstar_gallery2.jpg

So what is Northstar's "Dirtiest Deed"?

- Shoplifting in his early teens until caught by Raymonde Belmonde? revealed in Northstar #1, Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #8)

- Joining a radical separatist terrorist organization known as the Front de Liberation du Quebec? revealed in Northstar #3, Marvel Fanfare (vol. 1) #28)

- Using his mutant powers to help him gain an unfair advantage and win an Olympic Gold medal in skiing? revealed in Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #10, 41)

- Helping cause a multitude of destruction in Calgary while trying to recapture the Department H deserter, Wolverine, and unnecessarily assaulting Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Storm (the latter of whom had just quelled an out-of-control blizzard to help save his life)? (Uncanny X-Men #120-121, Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #7)

- Unjustly attacking Aaron Stack, the Machine Man? (Machine Man (vol. 1) #18)

- Refusing to get Aurora proper psychological help because it would likely result in their secret identities being exposed? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #7)

- Accusing Aurora of having “romanced” her way out of danger with Deadly Ernest? ( Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #8)

- Fighting his sister Aurora’s lover, Sasquatch, because he disapproved of their relationship? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #12)

- Hanging up on Heather Hudson upon being asked to re-join Alpha Flight, just because Aurora wasn’t speaking to him? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #18)

- Objecting, and arguing with his Alpha Flight teammates about journeying into the Well of Sorrows to help bring Sasquatch back from the dead? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #24)

- Protesting that his sister Aurora began dating the paraplegic, Roger Bachs? (Alpha Flight Annual (vol. 1) #1)

- After saving Melanie Kilgrave, the mother of the Purple Girl, and her asking, “What ever can I do to repay you?” replying she should send her daughter to a boarding school far, far away? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #42)

- Telling Walter Langkowski, who was trapped in Snowbird’s body, that he preferred him as a man? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #48)

- Grabbing Mr. Fantastic, and with his super-speed, stretching him as far as possible to cause him extreme pain? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #94)

- With his super-speed, planting several bombs behind USAgent, then detonating them? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #103)

- Refusing to go and bail Aurora, Heather Hudson, and Diamond Lil out of jail when they were arrested at Lil’s bachelorette party, instead letting the answering machine pick up while he went to bed? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #105)

- Abandoning his post at Alpha Flight’s emergency communication station to go out for a run? (Alpha Flight (vol. 1) #115)

- Assaulting Paulie Provenzano by punching him repeatedly with his super-speed? (Uncanny X-Men #392)

- Assaulting the Genoshan refugee, Robert, with extreme prejudice, splitting him in half, and putting him in a coma? (Uncanny X-Men #415)

- Telling Warren Worthington III that he was a reckless heir who was letting his company flounder? (Uncanny X-Men #417)

- Twice assaulting his old teammate, Guardian, once throwing him through a brick wall? (Uncanny X-Men #422, 432)

- Working as an assassin for the Hand and attacking the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier? (Wolverine (vol. 3) #27-28)

- Attacking the X-Mansion with Aurora? (X-Men (vol. 2) #189-190)

- Telling Anole that his newly grown deformed arm looked hideous? (X-Men: Divided We Stand #1)

He’s been an Olympic Gold Medalist, a member of Alpha Flight, a teacher at Xavier’s, an X-Man, and even a radical member of a separatist movement in Quebec! (He’s also all about other dudes.) Now, vote for what you think is the worst of Northstar’s “Dirty Deeds”!

WBE As usual a great thread. However I honestly don't think Jean-Paul has done any dirty deeds if those examples are to go by. All of them seem perfectly acceptable.

The comment to Purple Girls mum was class. I think he should get a reward for it.

I also agree with him about Anoles arm. It does look mank.

Maybe one of his dirtiest deeds could be that dodgy marvel swimsuit picture he posed for?

Actually, I'd agree. I only would take 4 of the 10 on the poll seriously. And even then, they've got a grain of salt to them. Like, the FLQ bombed civilian targets, but Jean-Paul left them long before they got that radical.

The comment to Purple Girls mum was class. I think he should get a reward for it.
I found a few classic Alpha Flight Jean-Paul moments while researching him. My favorite was Madison Jeffries asking him, sarcastically, something to the extent of: "You can insult people in French, too?"

His reply?

"Especially in French".

And Heather Hudson was a hoo-hoo to him after the Purple Girl thing. She was all, "Of course you felt like you were raped... it's just because she's a woman!"

Alpha Flight v. 1 #42. Big hint towards his sexuality, long before it got revealed five years later in #106.

I also agree with him about Anoles arm. It does look mank.
For you or me to say it is one thing. Jean-Paul's the kid's teacher, who he idolizes. That's a real kick in the nuts to Anole.

Maybe one of his dirtiest deeds could be that dodgy marvel swimsuit picture he posed for?

If I left Psylocke's MANY dodgy Marvel Swimsuit pictures out of her Dirty Deeds thread, I gotta give Northstar the same benefit of the doubt.

My reaction to pretty much all these deeds is "Oh Jean-Paul, you so silly! "

I mean, most of them are just Jean-Paul being Jean-Paul, and there's nothing dirty about being bluntly honest, aside from maybe having little to no regard for a person's feelings. There's a few that highlight his temper, and that's... eh. It doesn't really speak for him, but it's not much of a dirty deed.

Attacking Storm after she'd just stopped Shaman's out of control blizzard was pretty low, though, and youthful ignorance only goes so far to explain his joining a radical Quebecois separatist organization.

Maybe one of his dirtiest deeds could be that dodgy marvel swimsuit picture he posed for?

I voted for refusing to get proper help for Aurora, and refusing to help resurrect Sasquatch.

The olympic gold medal thing is a good question though. If he did not use performance enhancers, would it be a legitimate achievement? His powers are his natural gift.

But kicking your charge in the nuts is one of the most important parts of any student-teacher relationship! Telling him he thought the arm looked good or ignoring the subject alltogether would have been condescending.

I'm thinking the Aurora thing was the worst, myself. Especially because patient confidentiality meant the shrink shouldn't have revealed either of their identities, anyway.

They have the Unlimited Class Wrestling Federation in the Marvel Universe for a reason. In a world of superhumans, ordinary folk have made it a point to discern it's another level of competition not to intertwine with their own. The X-Factor miniseries (vol. 2) had a mutant baseball player named Tony Robb getting close to the home run record, who had the mutant power to blur his actual location. Not that it was helping him set the record... but he used it once in little league to get hit by a pitch, and he felt it was like cheating, so he vowed to never do it again.

After hitting the record home run ball, a sniper shot Tony Robb as he rounded third, crippling him. He's not been mentioned one way or another since.

But kicking your charge in the nuts is one of the most important parts of any student-teacher relationship! Telling him he thought the arm looked good or ignoring the subject alltogether would have been condescending.

Given Anole's state of mind, though? It was pretty rough. Normally I overlook bitchy things said, rather than done, but even I had to pause on that one.

Besides, Northstar's barely had any naughty moments. I had to put something down.

"Blowing up Iceman" should be its own option seperate from attacking the Xavier Institute. Bastard Frenchy(-Canadian).

Lester, having researched Northstar, I'm going to tell you you are so wrong it hurts.

Nurse Annie was nudging Jean-Paul to pursue his crush on Iceman, and he's the one that told her it wasn't meant to be, because Bobby is straight. Northstar never tried to have a relationship with him.

Not that I'm saying Northstar's gay-dar isn't on the fritz, but I'd trust it.

In all the research I did, I could not find one example of Jean Paul even kissing a guy on panel, or discussing an old flame. Not one.

Which, has only one benefit for me, we don't have to consider him on behalf of people who adhere to whatever holy text frowns on the dreaded gay lovin'. And anyone who insists I should include it? Get f***ed, join the 20th century, then the 21st, where we're living. If you really want it there, anyway, go and vote "other".

But enough about my opinions of tolerance of alternate lifestyles... The weird part is, for all intents and purposes, by coming out on panel, and little more? Northstar's arguably only depicted to be slightly more gay than Beast.

I'm pretty well versed in the world of Jean-Paul and I can't think of any instances where that happened either. I can barely think of him harboring feelings for anyone either, other than that hardly-discussed kind-of-crush on Bobby during Austen's run.

I was going to suggest 'Being gay' as one of the dirty deeds when I first saw that topic, but figured that people would just look past my obvious homosexuality when they go straight for my throat. >.>

That's one of the things I like best about Jean-Paul. He's gay, but hardly in any stereotypical manner. He brings the snark that's commonly associated with it, but other than that? Nothing much. When I think Jean-Paul, I'd sooner think of stuff like kicking Rogue's ass during Carey's run and the verbal put-downs many of his teammates have experienced. I'd say Beast and many other X-Men actually come off as more gay than him most of the time.
