I am getting sick of all of the times when heroes turn evil.

They are superheroes. They shouldn't turn evil for no reason or just snap.

They are supposed to be icons, and able to do what the average person cannot. They shouldn't falter in the face of opposition.

It seems like most of these Face Heel Turns are editorial mandates that are usually hated by nearly the entire fanbase. When will they learn that these do not make sense and fans don't support it?

Editors are not writers!

Look at Cassandra Cain. Three years later and an attempt to fix her and fans are still as mad as ever.

What about when Nightwing turned into Renegade? Fans didn't like that.

Raven becoming evil then good then evil then good then evil... Once was enough. Twice TOPS.

Mary Marvel's good to evil to good to evil...

Hal Jordan...

Captain Atom becoming the Monarch twice.

Why do it in the first place?

Anyone else tired of it?

I think with the exception of Hal Jordan, it's done with what are perceived as lesser-known characters in an attempt to try and find a new, intriguing angle that will generate fan interest and in turn higher sales. Villains often get the same side-switching treatment for the same reason. And while I'm sure often times the story is created at the behest of the writer because they think it'll be a good read (Black Adam comes to mind), I'd wager it's usually just a money grab.

Readers may not like it when their favorite cape becomes a turn-coat, but I'd assume there's at least two sure-fire sales spikes in these instances: The first being when the hero goes bad, and the second occurring when they're redeemed. It's sort of the "lite" version of the "Death & Rebirth of" storyline in that regard.

"You either die being a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

According to the biggest comic book movie probably ever, there's your moment of zen and the attitude on that subject for the next few decades.

It's just a trope of serial fiction, like evil doubles, old friends whom you owe a debt to, and never-before-heard-of relatives. Over a great length of stories, there are only so many ways to look at a character from different angles, and one of the easier angles, is their collapse, their falling/failing. Most of them make it back out the other side, like a Tunnel of Love, bearing only the memories, a mild postcoital shiver, and the taste of someone else in their mouths.

Nightwing never "turned evil" he was undercover. Raven's personality since day one has always been about her struggle against the darkness. Captain Atom only became Monarch once because they wussed out the first time.

You've hardly got a trend here. It's a whopping four over 15 years and only one even close to A-list (Hal). Not to mention Batgirl was returned to form almost immediately and Captain Atom will be back to normal as well, with Mary Marvel no doubt to follow.

Well Raven is the daughter of hell demon type guy so it seem natural she should slip now and then or else her struggle to do good is over looked.

Hal Jordan made him more interesting at least to me and it gave the world Kyle so no complaints on that score from me.

Now the Captain Atom. Mary Marvel and even Jason Todd coming back as a punisher type leave me underwhelmed. However I think for at least the first two it was a badly told story, with Todd I don't think there was a good way to bring him back, but his whole machine gun crime fighting style bores me.

Now Max Lord turning evil I think was a great story. Not sure if people would consider him a hero but he was a good guy (well before we were told it was an act)

Batgirl's good again? I've been out of touch, I remember something about a one issue or multi-issue spot where she turns good, but I think it's kinda hard after taking over an assasin league and then trying to kill Supergirl (not that I've forgotten the fun Supergirl and Wondergirl had in Amazon's attack, but if DC wants to forget it then there is nothing to do about it.)

I dont see it as some overwhelming trend at all, infact far as them actually becoming evil its quite rare. You see heroes "die" more often.

And the one goodguy who went bad was superboy prime and personally I loved it, he is alot better character as a bad guy. Probablly because he isnt a textbook badguy or anything, he is just in his own warped mind a hero still but does bad things.

That's why I stopped reading Marvel. DC may have characters turn bad, but, for better or worse, there's a reason. Marvel's been having almost all their characters turn into traitors and/or killers for no reason other than lazy writers.

The villains then turn evil again. Look at Deathstroke for example.
