AWESOME!
Listen, I would LOVE him to be innocent, here. He's a musical hero of mine and a huge force in some of the most beloved music of all time.
But he shot that poor innocent girl in the FACE, goddammit, and the first jury deadlocked ten to two despite the fact that this asshole pulled guns on people on a REGULAR BASIS, including, famously, Dee Dee Ramone during the recording of END OF THE CENTURY.
People found this terrible, tragic story to be hilarious, somehow, making jokes about it on the late night shows, mocking his hairstyle and other stupid shit, completely forgetting that the only thing that matters is that he put a gun in an innocent woman's mouth and pulled the trigger, AND then confessed to his chauffeur moments later.
Yes. Love Phil Spector's music and genius.
But that stinking pile of human excrement took another person's life after a long history of abuse, alcoholism and intimidation with guns and threats of violence. For once, the right goddamn celebrity couldn't buy his way out of murder.
I am not a vengeful sort. But the thought of that woman lying dead on the floor with her head blown off and the defense having the NERVE to try to spin it that she killed herself while a guy who got away with this shit his entire life sits in his mansion and drinks himself slowly to death is too much.
You're going to jail, Spector. The jury COULD have reduced your sentence to involuntary manslaughter and didn't, and BLESS THEIR HEARTS for that.
Wish they could've been the ones for OJ and Robert Blake's trials, while we're at it.

I'll raise my glass to that.
Good luck in jail, creep.

Just a sad commentary on those who made light of the situation.

He shoved a gun into someone's mouth and fired it, and involuntary manslaughter was a potential sentence? How? What could be involuntary when the gun's been shoved into someone's mouth?

He claimed it was consensual gunplay and it went off accidently when she jerked his hand.

Good. This whole mess has been a disgrace. The supposedly 'poignant' articles describing the victim's b-movie career in comparison to Spector's. The fetishism of a 'celebrity trial'. A woman died and it was turned into a joke.

LOL, my father taught me to shoot handguns and I'll be damned how they supposedly 'accidentally' go off.
And I was very happy of the outcome of this trial, too.

Spector has always been a clown, apparently. The fact that his extreme lunacy never resulted in any convictions on lesser crimes is unfortunate. Had he been tried and convicted as a dangerous loon sooner, Clarkson might not have been killed. Here nor there. I realize that it is dangerous talk to suggest catching people like this before they have a chance to strike with the severity that he finally did, but really, his fame insulated him way too much for my liking.
This hits home for me a little too close right now. I attended a funeral last week for one of my best friends mother. She was murdered by her ex husband, whom she divorced 20 years ago. He had turned into a complete loon and had tortured this family for years with his nutty antics before he got the nerve up to kill his ex wife, at his own daughters home, no less. It just feels like there should be signs that ought to be indicators for this potential behavior, and it's a sad shame that folks like Spector will not be dealt with until someone pays the ultimate price.
Rot in Hell, Phil.

Yeah know what I first thought of when I saw this thread title the incident with Dee Dee Ramon that Gail mentioned in her post (this was before I click to read the actual thread). Makes you wonder how in hell something like this didn't happen sooner because of how batshit insane spector is and his flashing firearms around many times.

Glad to see Ol' Phil finally get what he deserved, but I've got to say that there is a really good chance that Blake in fact was innocent.
There is just too much evidence pointing to the late Christian Brando for me, and apparently his jury, to ignore.

Blake was pretty much a loner type who really was prosecuted because of his weird lifestyle with Bailey. The whole living in seperate houses on the estate and being more friends with her . Plus his personality of being dark and all made him KEY TARGET in the eyes of the Prosecution.
But if ya read up on the case its clear they had little to no evidence. Ballistics from the weapons Blake owned showed they weren't involved and he had no gun powder residue on his hands. It was basic hear say from stunt men and old pissed off guys Blake knew for years who claimed he tried to hire them and when one broke down on the stand and said he was lying to convict Blake , it shot it all to hell.
But Spector was guilty as fuck. And deserves to rot.
Finally!
This nutjob needs professional care and to be locked away the rest of his life. I mean he's no threat to me, but he is one to those close to him.

Wonder what Ronnie thinks. Waoh oh ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
I never liked Spector, I think he did a terrible job on the "Let it Be" album. Now I can watch the story on Dominick Dunne's Power, Privilege and Justice.

Not that it's anything close to the point, but I thought it was Johnny?
Back to the point...this is a damn fine verdict, and one that took way too long to get to.
If there is a hell, say hi to Ike Turner for us Phil!

There's a story that Leornard Cohen has told about Spector threatening to kill him, and holding him at gunpoint while they were working on Cohen's Death of a Ladies' Man. The album, from a production perspective, is severely overworked, and Cohen was trying to fix it, thin it out, and was caught in the act. Needless to say, they never worked together again.
It was only a matter of time.

I read this morning that he once threatened Leonard Cohen with a crossbow.
.........on that fact alone, it's amazing that 2 trials were needed to convict this fool.

Occasionally I run out of Truman Capote to read, and when that happens, sometimes I slum it and read some Tom Wolfe instead. The last time this happened, I read Wolfe's 1960s interview with / article about Spector...and I must say, Spector seemed to have some weird obsessions even back then.
Clearly, he's needed help for some time. It's a great pity someone had to end up dead before that became clear to everyone.

I always feel physically ill when people crack stupid jokes about real life tragedies. It's as bad as those assholes who made all those jokes about the Mcaan kidnapping case.
Still it's nice to see, after some of the ridiculous celebrity trials of previous years, that their not above the law.

He got 19 years.
That means he gets out when he is 88 if they don't release him early for good conduct or something.

Phil Spector isn't taking to prison life very well. The producer - who was jailed last Friday (May 29) for 19 years for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson - has apparently had his collection of bizarre wigs confiscated by prison staff in his California jail. He's asked for a hat to wear in their place.
A well-placed anonymous source said: "Prison is a living hell for Spector. He is finding it difficult to cope." (Daily Star).

Some people consider getting shivved or beaten by gangstas or violated in the showers "a living hell."
.......Spector is not going to survive prison, is he?

The betting money is.... No. Its likely , given his mental breakdown ....he'll kill himself in prison.

Hearing all this stories about how nuts Spector was, and how he pointed guns at people makes me wonder why anyone didn't DO anything about it until his gun actually went off and killed someone?
It seems clear that the guy has needed serious psychiatric help for some time. When it's that obvious that someone's really screwed up, something should be done before it results in a tragedy. I just don't see why that didn't happen in this case.

Because in cases then...Spector was considered a big name producer and someone you didn't want mad at you in the music industry. John Lennon was ok with Spector until he pulled a gun on him in the studio . It was then that Lennon got scared and never worked with him again.
But by the late 70's his career slowed down and he no longer had that huge power . And in Lennon's case he was just coming off years of being followed by the FBI and nearly kicked outta the country by Hoover .
So sadly he had to take that scary incident and move on.
