From Hayseed to X-Man: Cannonball Appreciation

Samuel Guthrie...CANNONBALL

Sam Guthrie(Cannonball) was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod

Samuel Zachary Guthrie generates a thermal/kinetic field around himself which renders him invulnerable and allows him to fly. Though it usually emanates from his lower body, he has been able to extend it outwards as a shield and channel it to his fists for added punch. The eldest of ten children from a Kentucky coal mining family, Cannonball is one of a few X-Men from a southern, rural background and has maintained the values of civility, hard work, and a strong commitment to his beliefs throughout his career as a superhero. When his father died in a mining accident Cannonball took role of the father figure till leaving to learn to control his powers. Several of his siblings are also mutants and have joined X-Men-related teams, including Paige (Husk), Jay (Icarus), and Melody.

Cannonball was a founding member of the X-Men's junior team, The New Mutants. Here he met his best friend Roberto DaCosta (Sunspot) and two long time girlfriends, Lila Cheney and later Tabitha Smith (Boom Boom/Boomer/Meltdown). The New Mutants were co-lead by Cannonball and teammate Dani Moonstar (Psyche/Mirage/Moonstar). Cannonball was with the New Mutants for historical X-Men battles such as: Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, and X-Tinction Agenda. During his time with the New Mutants he was trained by Xavier and Magneto until Cable took control of the team turning them into a mutant rebel militia known as X-Force. The X-Men disapproved of X-Force's ways and once Cable was believed dead Cannonball took the role of leader and stood up to Xavier. Along with X-Force, Cannonball participated in famous X-Men battles: X-Cutioner's Song, Fatal Attraction, and Phalanx Covenant. Because of his dedication to Xavier's dream he joined the X-Men, becoming the first member of a secondary team to "graduate". During his initial run with the X-Men he became a sidekick to Wolverine - most notably battled the Dark Riders when they tried to replace Wolverine's adamantium, he defeated Gladiator on his own, helped fight against Onslaught, went undercover during Graydon Creed's Presidential Election with new pal Bobby Drake (Iceman), and fought Bastion during Operation: Zero Tolerance. His tenure was complicated by clashes with superiors and he eventually left to rejoin X-Force.

Later Cannonball joined the X-Corps in Europe where he worked with some former New Mutants and X-Force teammates. After his teammate Darkstar was killed in battle Cannonball decided to leave X-Corp and rekindle with his ex-girlfriend Lila Cheney. Once he saw what was happening at Xaviers he could no longer stay away. He contacted Storm and she invited him to join her X.S.E. team where Cannonball would become an official government officer. Cannonball was no longer the X-Men newbie. He remained with the X.S.E. X-Men through Emma Frost and Cyclop's take over of the school. After getting injured in battle he left the team and briefly reunited with members of X-Force. Cannonball returned to the mansion to join Rogue's X-team. With a team full of mostly "former" villains Cannonball stuck close to his friend and former teammate Iceman. During their first battle Cannonball was mentally attacked by Serafina, a member of Children of the Vault. Cannonball hurt by her manipulation and blasted Serafina into their ship; leaving her lifeless body. After most of his team would betray the X-Men he would battle Mr. Sinister and the Marauders where he would sustain grave injuries but would recovery in time for the final battle of the Messiah Complex.

Cannonball moved to San Fran with the rest of the X-Men, soon after he defended the city against a Secret Invasion by the Skrulls. He took the lead in reuniting with his original teammates the New Mutants to battle Xaviers son Legion. He has become a go to solider and leader in Cyclops army of X-Men. Cyclops believes Cannonball might be the next generations leader of the mutant race. Cannonball assisted the X-Men in battling Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers/X-Men and the creation of Utopia. Where he helps take care of all the farming needs on the mutant island. During Necrosha Selene resurrected the New Mutants former school rivals, the Hellions. Then the Second Coming of Hope had Cannonball lead a team of X-Men in a Hellbound mission to limbo. Bastion was defeat but not without the loss of Cannonball's former leader/mentor Cable. Sadly there is no rest for Cannonball are quickly taken back to limbo for one of their hardest battles yet in the Fall of the New Mutants. The New Mutants won the battle with many costs; as last result Cannonball kills some of their enemies, and Legion (freed to defeat the elder god) changes reality... Age of X. After reality changes back Cannonball kept his memories of the other world and asks Emma Frost to remove them. Due to these events Cannonball steped down as leader and asked to be put under observation, not being able to process the recent events. During this time he and Moonstar find an attraction torwards one another.

Post Schism Cannonball leaves Moonstar, Cyclops, and Utopia and joins Husk, Wolverine, and the new Jean Grey School for Higher Learning back in New York.

Cannonball was a playable bonus character in X-Men Legends 2 for PSP. In the animation side he was featured in one episode of the 90s X-Men: The Animated Series. And had a small reoccuring role with the "New Mutants" in X-Men: Evolution. He did not appear in the first season (and only) of Wolverine and the X-Men. One day we can hope for a New Mutants animated series, X-Men animated series where he is a main character, and an appearance in a feature film!

Cannonball has been awesome from the get go, except for one little hiccup when he first went from leading X-Force to become an X-man, and somehow the assured and confident Sam who stood up to Havoc, Storm and Xavier in the X-Cuttioners Song and its aftermath, Magneto in Fatal Attractions and so on and so forth was suddenly de-aged and de-balled and became unconfident, bumbling and deferential. Luckily it didn't stick and he was allowed to kick the **** out of Gladiator. Course, the early 90s X-Force was my first comic book, so I am slightly biased.

Cannonball is a great character. They messed him up when they took him off X-Force and "graduated" him to the X-Men. It's good that that have him back with the New Mutants instead of wasting away in X-Purgatory/Limbo.

Cannonball returned to mansion to join Rogue's team. With a team full of mostly "former" villiams he quickly became good friends with teammate Bobby Drake (Iceman).

He's been friends with Bobby for a while now, long before they were on Rogue team together.

Cannonball's a great character. Kid's come a long way from the naive, goofy-looking farm boy in New Mutants. Hopefully Wells remembers this in his depiction of Guthrie.

cannonball is excellent. i feel like he would be very intimidating in reality.

He is the only X-Man I prefer over the O5 and that is saying a lot. As for going from skinny to muscles, well, years of field work can do that I think so that is a small issue. My fav moments were his confidence in leading X-Force despite bad odds to coming on his own among Storm's XSE where basicaly took control over the team to lead them on a rescue mission for Bishop to Carey's cool character moments with him. Without a doubt his best moments as a character were in Fabian;s X-Force but he has had some nice potrayal by Claremont and Carey too.

That IS from a video game... He was an unlockable character in X-Men Legends 2 but only for the PSP.

Has anyone played as him? I only had it for the PS2... I was tempted to get a PSP because of it... but it would have been for one game, and I'm not much of a gamer.

Very true... I feel like it validated their friendship more. I was just trying to mention characters that he is close to and it fit better there than before. But it did begin when he first joined and they both went undercover together for the Graydon Creed election and in the Kelly/Seagle run.

I think regardless of the goodbyes or no, it's basically the same. And in that situation personally I would feel some grief and sorrow but not to the degree of family or current friends passing.

Yeah... I don't see Rogue as a leader at all and then you have Cable and Cannonball on her team. Cannonball really should have been leader. But I guess the whole point with Rogue as leader was the team failed.

So I'm loving this thread. I always appreciated this guy and Cannonball is a great tactician and has an expansive power set. I've always wanted to see the top x-men tacticians pick a team, do war games for a few books/or as a story in the back on a secluded spot Big 10 tournament style

Remy is better off with Jean, Jean has a hidden wild streak that can Remy can bring out without all the emotional baggage of Logan. Plus they are both Storm's close friends and I totally can see Storm being stuck in the middle of the arguments and making up.

Sam and Rogue actually have a long history (even though some were retconed into existence) and came from different upbringing despite being from the south and they both have different levels of strenths that can complement each other well.

They also worked together in Rogue's team and Sam's speech to her in X-Men #200 makes me swoon every time I read that issue. Plus they've been friends for a long time.

It was a good speech, but in the end, I still see them as good friends. 90s, Bobby went on a roadtrip with Rogue, and was there for her. I see him more as a friend though. She's the type who gets along with guys without being their boyfriend, one of the guys. well, that's how I see it :P

I agree about Rogue easily getting along with the boys but think there is a possibility of romance with Sam. I always felt that Rogue relationship were in these stages -

- Cody - childhood friend with experimentation

- Longshot - first crush

- Gambit - that crucial first love, passionate and ever so stressful and yet sweet

I think Rogue still has room for her true soul mate and would like to see if Sam can fill that slot.

Since I've been in the market for some new trades, here's a question for all the fans; who wrote the best Cannonball? What arcs/runs on which titles feature him doing his thing most prominently?

I like the progression of Sam as a character and leader. The peak of this was in the issue of X-Force #19 where he explained the "Open hand vs the Closed Fist" to Xavier. It summed up where his character comes from. He's learned from Xavier, Magneto, and Cable and is in a unique position as a result.

That said, I don't like to see Dani Moonstar sidelined in favor of the aggrandizement of Sam. They were partners and co-leaders with Danielle being cited as being ahead of Cyclop's tactical curve. It makes sense that she was out of the loop for a long time because of her sojourn in Asgard and being undercover but I would like to see some parity btw the 2 again or get her out from under him completely.

I kind of like that idea, actually. Someone suggested X-23 which would certainly be interesting, but she's a bit young, I think.

That was probably me on another thread. Laura’s under age right now so no. But I would all be for it in the future. Sam is gentle and kind, but at the same time he won’t be pushed around, so I think that he would be good for her.

It is a fair question. I think its because Cannonball has never been on a flagship X-Team. When he originally joined the X-Men the teams weren't really blue and gold anymore. And during the 90s the flagship memorable team is either the blue or, as I would say, the characters from The Animated Series. Then it was the X-Treme team, which was the B-Team to Morrison's New X-Men. then Carey's X-Men which was the B-Team to Whedon.

X-23 was given a push by Marvel. She can not only fall into the X-Men category but the newer Wolverine solo cateogry too. She is a female which there are less known and iconic characters of. But it is a bit odd.

He was 17 when he joined. It hasnt been 3 years. Id say its been at least 7 years since the New Mutants were formed. Forget what Fraction wrote in that dumb scene in UXM. Sam is closer to 23-24

I agree. Age of X has been fun but it has been so Rogue focused. When it comes to alternate worlds you wanna see lot more characters in more than just cameos. But I have enjoyed Sam incharge a lot. I hope he continues post AoX. I wish Carey was still writing him.

I love, love, love him in it. I love that he stands up to Basilisk, but he is currently being stubborn, as always, in not listening to Basilisk. It'd be nice if he'd have been hooking up with Legacy in this and him helping Legacy, rather than Gambit.

Mike Carey: I think we see him doing what he’s done every day for three years—or a week, if you prefer. He steps up to the plate and does what has to be done to ensure the survival of the people he’s responsible for. So it’s all of a piece, really, with his refusal to leave the battle lines in chapter five. Back then, he didn’t have any proof that the threat of the Human Coalition had just gone away, so he stood his ground and held the line he’d been told to hold. Now, the situation has changed out of all recognition but he’s still the field commander and he gets right down to the job. He commands.

I have a huge respect for Sam, and for his leadership skills. I think—given what he knew, and the responsibilities that were on him—he made the right call in both of those instances.

While I loved Sam in the recent New Mutants, I would have done things slightly different. Since Sam was the only one that didn't follow Scott, I would have started the issue with Sam trying to hold back the assault solo, while at the same time issuing orders for where people needed to get to. Instead of being taken down half way through the book, I would have done it page four. Would have kept the Rouge/Sam scene but at the end Rouge takes over and starts issuing orders having gained the knowledge of what needed to be done from Sam along with his powers.

That said, Sam still kicked ass anways.

I like all these ideas. I don't know if he would fit in with X-Factor, but PAD could make it work.

Personally I think they are letting some of this stuff get to him a little too much. But I think Cannonball/Iceman mini would be a good way to lift his spirits.

Sam Guthrie(Cannonball) was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod

Samuel Zachary Guthrie generates a thermal/kinetic field around himself which renders him invulnerable and allows him to fly. Though it usually emanates from his lower body, he has been able to extend it outwards as a shield and channel it to his fists for added punch. The eldest of ten children from a Kentucky coal mining family, Cannonball is one of a few X-Men from a southern, rural background and has maintained the values of civility, hard work, and a strong commitment to his beliefs throughout his career as a superhero. When his father died in a mining accident Cannonball took role of the father figure till leaving to learn to control his powers. Several of his siblings are also mutants and have joined X-Men-related teams, including Paige (Husk), Jay (Icarus), and Melody.

Cannonball was a founding member of the X-Men's junior team, The New Mutants. Here he met his best friend Roberto DaCosta (Sunspot) and two long time girlfriends, Lila Cheney and later Tabitha Smith (Boom Boom/Boomer/Meltdown). The New Mutants were co-lead by Cannonball and teammate Dani Moonstar (Psyche/Mirage/Moonstar). Cannonball was with the New Mutants for historical X-Men battles such as: Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, and X-Tinction Agenda. During his time with the New Mutants he was trained by Xavier and Magneto until Cable took control of the team turning them into a mutant rebel militia known as X-Force. The X-Men disapproved of X-Force's ways and once Cable was believed dead Cannonball took the role of leader and stood up to Xavier. Along with X-Force, Cannonball participated in famous X-Men battles: X-Cutioner's Song, Fatal Attraction, and Phalanx Covenant. Because of his dedication to Xavier's dream he joined the X-Men, becoming the first member of a secondary team to "graduate". During his initial run with the X-Men he became a sidekick to Wolverine - most notably battled the Dark Riders when they tried to replace Wolverine's adamantium, he defeated Gladiator on his own, helped fight against Onslaught, went undercover during Graydon Creed's Presidential Election with new pal Bobby Drake (Iceman), and fought Bastion during Operation: Zero Tolerance. His tenure was complicated by clashes with superiors and he eventually left to rejoin X-Force.

Later Cannonball joined the X-Corps in Europe where he worked with some former New Mutants and X-Force teammates. After his teammate Darkstar was killed in battle Cannonball decided to leave X-Corp and rekindle with his ex-girlfriend Lila Cheney. Once he saw what was happening at Xaviers he could no longer stay away. He contacted Storm and she invited him to join her X.S.E. team where Cannonball would become an official government officer. Cannonball was no longer the X-Men newbie. He remained with the X.S.E. X-Men through Emma Frost and Cyclop's take over of the school. After getting injured in battle he left the team and briefly reunited with members of X-Force. Cannonball returned to the mansion to join Rogue's X-team. With a team full of mostly "former" villains Cannonball stuck close to his friend and former teammate Iceman. During their first battle Cannonball was mentally attacked by Serafina, a member of Children of the Vault. Cannonball hurt by her manipulation and blasted Serafina into their ship; leaving her lifeless body. After most of his team would betray the X-Men he would battle Mr. Sinister and the Marauders where he would sustain grave injuries but would recovery in time for the final battle of the Messiah Complex.

Cannonball moved to San Fran with the rest of the X-Men, soon after he defended the city against a Secret Invasion by the Skrulls. He took the lead in reuniting with his original teammates the New Mutants to battle Xaviers son Legion. He has become a go to solider and leader in Cyclops army of X-Men. Cannonball assisted the X-Men in battling Norman Osborn and his Dark Avengers/X-Men and the creation of Utopia. Where he helps take care of all the farming needs on the mutant island. During Necrosha Selene resurrected the New Mutants former school rivals, the Hellions. Then the Second Coming of Hope had Cannonball lead a team of X-Men in a Hellbound mission to limbo. Bastion was defeat but not without the loss of Cannonball's former leader/mentor Cable. Sadly there is no rest for Cannonball as his team begins the Fall of the New Mutants. Cyclops believes Cannonball might be the next generations leader of the mutant race.

Cannonball was a playable bonus character in X-Men Legends 2 for PSP. In the animation side he was featured in one episode of the 90s X-Men: The Animated Series. And had a small reoccuring role with the "New Mutants" in X-Men: Evolution. He did not appear in the first season (and only) of Wolverine and the X-Men. One day we can hope for a New Mutants animated series, X-Men animated series where he is a main character, and an appearance in a feature film!

Now that we have seen covers to all the team books and the key members, any new guesses to where Sam might end up ? I know the popular opinion is Wolverine and the X or NEw Mutants.

Me I am hoping its the former.

Would love to see Sam work with Wolverine again. Or has he become too much of a Cyclops man?

I'm beginning to think that Cannoball is the character that Wolverine has to drag in chains to his side. The Cyclops fanboy will be hard to convert, but if anyone can do it.....Wolverine can. The history he has in Xtreme X-men and the fact that I can actually see Wolvie giving Sam a shot at leadership without the pressure of Cyclops's acceptance.

yeah I think Sam needs someone like Wolverine to get over his recent decline in New Mutants. It took a guy like Cable to toughen him up and get him out of his shell. So Wolverine may be the right choice.

I don't think Cannonball siding with Wolverine is too crazy. Thus fair the rift has been about Idie killing, which Cannonball is currently struggling with. Therefore, siding with Wolverine is not much of stretch. But yes Wolverine/Cannonball duo is much needed.

I was kinda bummed that Sam didn't really make an appearance in Wolverine and the X-Men. Plus in the back he is listed as a JR staff member, when Rachel is a SR staff member.

i think the decision to be Jr. Staff was his own. he seemed like he really needed time away to just chill after the events in the last NM arc. If anything he's going to be taking some time to bond with his sister as a priority.

To be honest I think Sam needs to step up and become the leader he is destined to be. I don't know if they ditched the idea but when Cable first came back there was records showing Cannonball surviving up into the 24th century. I know they
got rid of the immortal highlord story but Sam ended up getting shot 3 times in the chest and he made a miraculously recovery that Beast couldn't explain in later issues. He deserves the right to finally lead his own X-Men team instead of being a support member. They should bring Firestar to work at the JGSFHL as a guidance counselor and since they both showed interest in each other during the Firestar Mini 1-4. I can see them as a couple. I also have a pitch to possibly bring Cannonball back into the limelight for Marvel.
