View Full Version : X-Crescence CVIII: Orange Juice Blues (Blues For Breakfast)

Welcome to X-Crescence, which is from the word excrescence, which is defined as "An outgrowth or enlargement, especially an abnormal one, such as a wart."
Well, this is an outgrowth from the X-Boards proper.
This is where you pretty much can post whatever you want.
Civility rules apply here! But you can have arguments and stuff like that - do note that arguments can and SHOULD be civil. One thing you definitely can't do is trash talk posters who are not in the thread, like, "Oh man, did you see what Poster X said? What a loser." You can talk generally about stuff, though - like, "Oh man, some posters are really getting me mad today," etc.
And I certainly hope folks follow the rules, because I'd hate to close it again.
Otherwise, enjoy!

My safe word is "reverie".
The bird is the word.
And... Easter with the family was alright. I talked my grandmother out of giving her kidney to my bastard uncle, who's already trying to con his way up the donor list. It's bad enough he went on a shopping spree with my grandfather's credit cards when he died. Now he's literally being a jackal and trying to scavenge my grandma for body parts. Ass.
He'll be fine on dialysis, but if he hadn't ignored his doctor's warnings from his diabetes, he wouldn't need someone else's kidney.

I am feeling better. And, I have good news for you. Whenever any Americans here on CBR give you grief about Pearl Harbor... I watched a documentary on the military channel tonight that proved...
The Americans shot first.
The Japanese were going to send 5 midget submarines into Pearl Harbor, to make sure the attack wasn't strictly from the air. The documentary was trying to account for what happened to all five (two were still unaccounted for, as of 2000). They found one in 2001, and it was from the records of a U.S. Destroyer, the USS Ward, that spotted it far outside Pearl Harbor, fired and successfully put a shell through the tower of the sub, before sinking it with depth charges.
So, Pearl Harbor: The U.S. started it (Well, the Japanese already had all the bombers in the air, and the attack began 1 hour later). I was totally blown away. Great documentary.
And... the VA internet link is shutting down for maintenence. I'll be missing in action for the next 20-30 minutes. Catch you guys in a bit.

Death by anemia? You feel weak. So weak. Because you don't have the blood cells to get oxygen to your muscles, and function properly. This hypoxia eventually can cause cell death, which, widespread through the body... you just waste away, powerless to get up and do anything about it.
I heard another story (couldn't find the link) of a woman fleeing from authorities who fell into a river loaded full of leeches, who was sucked dry, as well. Not a way I'd want to go.

Normally, it's people bleeding to death from a gastrointestinal bleed.
Cancer patients, every once and awhile, can develop an anemia with their condition, as the treatments can often have detrimental effects on not just cancerous cells, but someone's own.
I've seen it pretty often, but usually it's just the result of another underlying condition. Nobody dies strictly of like, sickle cell anemia, or even aplastic anemia.

Now that I think of it, weird that some of your macabre stories come from the medical field? Because you would have personal experience in seeing the pain of those who suffered?
I have a few stories... I try to stay with the more humerous ones I've seen personally, though. Some of the stories are miserable. There was a patient with severe dementia, who was immunosuppressed, so he couldn't fight off infection. Then he got gangrene, and no amount of antibiotics was helping elimiate it.
First, he had a toe on one foot amputated (from his diabetes). That's where the infection started. They amputated more toes, then half his foot. Then all of it at the ankle. Then, from his other foot rubbing against it, he got gangrene on his other foot. Same thing started to happen on the opposite side. Next thing you know, they have to schedule to amputate his leg at the shin, the knee, the thigh. And the other one was practically racing to keep up. Every two or three days for two months, while I was wrapping up my internship, and then right out of school, we had to work to get blood to this guy in blood bank to support his scheduled amputation surgery. The gangrene eventually spread up to his waist, and they took off his lower body at the pelvis, giving him catheters in place of his excretory orifice, and a colostomy to eliminate digestive waste. The gangrene kept going, until he had an ileostomy. Then, somehow, it spread to his neck, and surgery had to take off some of the tissue there.
In doing so, they accidentally severed his carotid artery. And finally, mercifully, he bled to death. The doctors had been keeping him alive, partially as a study to see how long you could keep a person alive with amputative surgery. All I know is, with his severe dementia, if the poor guy had a conscious thought, it was, "What are they going to take next?" If it kept up, he was going to be a brain, heart, and lungs, though.
So yeah, that's my own personal true macabre story. It's pretty depressing, so I didn't exactly want to tell it sooner, but there it is.

Uncanny series, it was issue 469-471 if I remember correctly. The story was the direct continuation of 'Grey's End'. That is so sad.. if you were there every part of the story I feel you must be very strong and willful. I also imagine you might cry inside to see that if not crying on the outside. Do you think about it often?
I was grateful when this patient finally passed. It happened about four hours after I had gone home one day. His quality of life didn't justify keeping him alive. It was strictly a medical experiment, possibly just bragging rights of the surgical resident at the time, who had a rep for being quite the butcher of the OR.
It's probably the one case I had that made me lose sleep, more than the rest.

It's the "embarrassing" thing that poses the problem, otherwise I could have constant companionship in exchange for heroin, but all the prostitutes I know are thieving junkies.
Fortunately it's only today that everyone is unavailable. I'm off on a bike run tomorrow.

You talk like Marlene Dietrich
And you dance like Zizi Jeanmaire
Your clothes are all made by Balmain
And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair, yes there are
You live in a fancy apartment
Off the Boulevard Saint-Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sacha Distel, yes you do
But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes I do
I've seen all your qualifications
You got from the Sorbonne
And the painting you stole from Picasso
Your loveliness goes on and on, yes it does
When you go on your summer vacation
You go to Juan-les-Pins
With your carefully designed topless swimsuit
You get an even suntan on your back and on your legs
And when the snow falls you're found in Saint Moritz
With the others of the jet-set
And you sip your Napoleon brandy
But you never get your lips wet, no you don't
But where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Won't you tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes I do
Your name, it is heard in high places
You know the Aga Khan
He sent you a racehorse for Christmas
And you keep it just for fun, for a laugh, a-ha-ha-ha
They say that when you get married
It'll be to a millionaire
But they don't realize where you came from
And I wonder if they really care, or give a damn
Where do you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
Tell me the thoughts that surround you
I want to look inside your head, yes I do
I remember the back streets of Naples
Two children begging in rags
Both touched with a burning ambition
To shake off their lowly-born tags, so they try
So look into my face Marie-Claire
And remember just who you are
Then go and forget me forever
But I know you still bear the scar, deep inside, yes you do
I know where you go to my lovely
When you're alone in your bed
I know the thoughts that surround you
'Cause I can look inside your head
