View Full Version : Should Iceman become part of the main Marvel Universe?

would all of you dislike the idea of moving Iceman to the main Marvel Universe, maybe to Mighty Avengers book or if the New Warriors got back together. He hasnt really been a big player In the X-Verse.

It could work. His power is very basic superhero stuff, not as specific as some of the other X-Men. He could 'make sense' on a team like the Avengers.
He has been an important character in X-Men, but he just rarely takes command.

I think more than a few x-men could stand to be shipped out.
Wolverine: Make him a solo hero who also serves in the Avengers just like with Thor, Cap, and Iron Man. As it is, he just hogs space in the x-men.
Storm: Should take over as the new main character of Panther's book and the two of them make occasional guest appearances in several parts of the Universe.
Gambit: Theres no reason for him to even want to be an x-men anymore; other than editorial mandate. Let him take over as the head of Thunderbolts and put a few B-list villains and heros in as a supporting cast.
Nightcrawler: Since he's quitting anyway, he should return to Excalibur, with Colossus in tow.
Anymore and you risk leaving the franchise without enough big names to support itself. Iceman should definitely stay; he's got too much of a connection to the franchise.

As a fan of the character it would be good for him, he is overshadowed often on the X-Men especially lately.
As a fan of X-Men it would be bad to see one of the originals go.

Maybe... But he was in the Champions, the Defenders, and he appeared in Spidey's cartoon alongside Spidey and Firestar. They could push him into the 'mainstream' Marvel superhero books, without definitely severing his ties to the X-Men; have his being a mutant be a theme in whatever book he'd be appearing in, whether solo or a team book.

Nightcrawler only quit for the one issues... where at the end of the issue who came back to the team.
I'm not for him being moved to the larger universe, but if its written well I won't mind.

All of said people are key characters in the X-Verse, They definative X-Men. Bobby on the other hand is just overshadowed by the others & would do well to shine someplace else

The ones I see majorly as being better off as Marvel U characters and not strictly X-characters:
Angel- A pretty complex character with a very generic powerset. I would love seeing him as an Avenger, Defender, Champion, or whatever, and also double as Archangel every now and then on X-Force.
Gambit- He is a marksman through and through. I could see him teaming up with a bunch of street level villains or just having a solo career. Make him a Daredevil villain, a Marvel Knight, a Punisher co-star, or something of the sort. He needs to be in low key, street level, grim and gritty books.
Iceman- Again, as either an Avenger, Defender, Champion, whatever. I see him on The Mighty Avengers or some sort. Maybe as a Spider-Man teamup character or a Fantastic Four fill-in character. Perhaps even his own book if given the right direction and creative team.
Beyond that, I could see maye Rogue, Wolverine, Dazzler, Beast, or Psylocke doing well beign separated from the X-Men. But not all at the same time. If some are going to drift away it should be 1-3 tops. But hey, at least some of them would be used more often.
I wouldn't think of taking Colossus, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Cannonball, Storm, Polaris, Havok, etc out of the books. They need those characters and the characters need the X-Men to exist basically.

Storm and Dazzler I would like to see in the larger MU. They just don't fit anymore to me but are still viable characters. They have too much of another life that they seem cramped up staying with the X-Men.
I think Emma, despite me being annoyed with her for a couple years now, would work cooler in a higher position of power, too. I'm really looking forward to her in the Dark Reign Cabal thing.

I say yes, move him on to other things. They've already shipped off Kurt and you rarely see any of the second group or the original members other than Cyke around. I say he could find a home with the Mighty Avengers. He's quite powerful and they could use a few more new faces.

Yeah, that Nightcrawler thing was REALLY disappointing.
Bobby does need to move on. Put him in Mighty Avengers, along with Dazzler.
Kurt needs to go to join Captain Britian and his Crew.
Gambit needs to go be a baddie again, and take on Moon Knight and Daredevil, or join Thunderbolts.

Might be a good idea for the New Avengers -- give them a 'blaster' type and high power level player though (with the death of Ms Marvel or apparent death) a muscle guy would be better (unless they make Luke stronger).

I don't see any reason to leave. Specially now with the mutant situation. Have him leave the X-men now to hang out with the loser Avengers, like some suggested, would just make him loom frivolous and childish again, which is the last thing the character needs. There are few characters that I think should leave the X-books, and even less now with the Decimation non-sense.

Echoing what Omega Alpha said a bit... moving Iceman makes no sense with the low mutant numbers. If they can grow his role somehow to a veteran presence that he should be instead of a confused baby, it would be great for the character.

Out of curiosity, what powers would be mutant-specific to you? To their exclusion form non-mutant characters or something.

I suppose Sage's mutant power jumpstart ability.
Or No-Girl's power to negate mutant abilities.
Basically powers that only effect mutants.

Out of curiosity, what powers would be mutant-specific to you? To their exclusion form non-mutant characters or something.I phrased it a bit poorly, but... when I think of a mutant in the Marvel Universe, I think of powers/abilities that flow naturally out of their bodies. Things like Gambit's ability to charge an object with energy; Marrow's bone growth.
Heroes and villains who've gained their abilities through artificial means, potions, radiation, or who wear suits, tend to have power sets instead of one single power. Like, they'll have enhanced stamina or strength, plus an energy blast, and a heightened sense or mystical awareness. There are plenty of mutants who have power sets as well, but usually multiple powers for mutants are all based on one 'theme', or they find different ways to use their one power creatively.
It does happen that a hero or villain appears that has been irradiated and only has one power. There are a lot of exceptions, I suppose it's just how I personally feel about mutant powers.
Ice is so universal; fire is as well, which is why I think Sunfire could support a solo book beyond the X-Books as well.

Id like to see Iceman become a Defender again. I think that in the Avengers he would just end up as a background character again. On a small Defenders team and with his powers operating at top level he could be a major starring character.
I agree that Gambit should become a darker character and clash with the wider Marvel world. But i would have him clash with the villains as well as the heros. I can see Moon Knight and Taskmaster as good foils. Run in's with Iron Fist, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Vermin, Morbius, Punisher, Crossbone and Elektra would be interesting. Have Gambit raid HAMMER frequently and show no pity for the guards he comes across. Show hints that Gambit is raiding HAMMERS secrets for someone a lot more sinister (maybe Doom). Gambit is Marvel's premier thief and a very deadly person, it makes sense that the bigger powers would hire him when he's lost his morals.

Gambit has crossed paths with other marvel heroes outside of the x-men over the years as well as villains. Fought with Moon Knight & Werewolf by night in a 3 way brawl , got his ass kicked by Bullseye , run-in with daredevil and spider-man , fought and allied with jack monroe nomad.
If you want to see gambit being evil (and not that blue gnome that apocalypse turned him into) , check out that nomad issue where the evil gambit duplicate looking exactly like the real deal terrorised an airport and used his kinetic cards to murderous effect.

I'll have to agree with you on that one. On top of what you mentioned, another thing that scares me is that he'd also be put in the background by the writer that takes him over. Mike Carey has done a phenolenal job rearing him to where he is now, and I'd hate for the person that takes over Iceman's character to dumb him down, or disregard what Mike's done with the character for the last 3 years.
I think New Avengers would be an excellent team for him to start off with, and work his way up. He and Spiderman have lots of history in those Marvel One Shots of years past, plus they're around the same age and have similar personalities. Putting him on this team would put some hair on his chest (jokingly), and mature him into adult and controversial situations never thought of in the X-books.

Granted, Iceman is no Wolverine, but he does have the "boy next door" aura about him. I think if that was played up a bit, and give him some tough challenges with his morals, beliefs, powers, and duty, he'd definitely grow in popularity - because people would relate to him more. Kind of like what they did with Peter Parker.

In all honesty and seriousness, I'd be more motivated to buying Marvel merchandise if they didn't focus on Wolverine and mainstream characters as much. And if there were some nicely designed Iceman t-shirts... HELL YEAH I'd buy them in a heartbeat.
The only thing I have with Iceman on it is that Civil War silk screened t-shirt, and a iron on Iceman decal I bought on ebay some time ago. Otherwise, I won't be buying anything else of Marvel's, except for the books that he's in.
