as i said big sorry if i offended, but again if you read the full statement i wrote on my last thread i was genuinly trying to create a discussion on why comic book fans get such a bad rep. i honestly think this is a discussion worth having. maybe the people or mods who keep closing my threads have a problem with this discussion because perhaps they might know where the discussion will go once the majority of people get talking.

Is there no people out there who just might know what im talking about. i am honestly serious about wantng to have a discussion about why comic reading fans get such a bad name.

also..... the first thread i had wasnt making fun of people it was asking folk to highlight what they thought was funny about the stupid behaviour of "fanboys"(put in inverted so i didnt offend anyone)

i have stupid fanboy behaviour, we all do thats why we are on a bloody website forum.

That is the very definition of "making fun of" someone.

Since you seem genuinely confused:

you must understand that most fanboys dont have much interaction with the female species unless its their moms which explains why they think that girls who go with guys are whores. their mommy told them

Come on lets get ripping

ah so your one of the lesser spotted intellectual snobbish fans.

oooohhhhh i bet you read indy comics and look down on all us big 2 readers like we are stupid. that is until grant morrison writes something unreadable then you get on the intellectual bandwagon about how its only stupid people who cant understand it.

THAT'S trolling.

As long as you stick to actually discussing a topic (instead of going out of your way to make fun of and insult people), you should be fine. Here endeth the lesson

ok sorry ,quote 1 and 3 could be taken as me being out of order but the others cant. cmon do people here have that much of a bereft of human contact and intereaction that they cant get sarcasm and dry wit. i will take the piss out of myself just as much.

this whole point is getting us to the actual thing i was getting to.

whats wrong with getting "ripped" on??

is the way that comic "fanboys" react to "outsiders" and non "fanboys" part of the reason they get laughed at, bullied, teased, looked down at.

I know i can go into a pub and stand at one end of the bar and talk to the drunk guy about how rotten the beer tastes, then go half way up and talk to the guy about the footy or horse racing on the telly then go further up and talk to the guy reading the financial times about the world economic crisis. could most "fanboys do that???

whats wrong wiith trying to lose this stereotype.

perhaps the people that genuinly want to lose this are just too bogged down by the vocal minority that think you have to act a certain way to be in that group.

the only way i can try and compare it is the way that some people think the have to act if they are gay, you know the young gay and proud and camp people. i have gay friends who despise that kind of behaviour cause it gives them a negative stereotype to compete with.

im prob not putting this across properly but i do hope someone out there gets what im saying.

The thing is, most people who read comics don't worry about "fanboy cliches" or what makes people froth at the mouth. Indeed, if you go to a message board thread full about comic-related complaints, you'll find a cycle full of the usual suspects.

I feel like addressing the stereotype only reinforces the stereotype as well. It's like trying to fight violent stereotypes with guns and kung-fu.

Nothing, on the surface, but posting self-congratulatory (and, curiously, anti-intellectual) two-minute hate threads about the topic isn't going to accomplish it. If anything, it makes you look like merely another incarnation of the stereotype, the "I'm a better nerd than you" fanboy.

All you need to do to counter the fanboy stereotype is (1) rid yourself of the idea that it is just men on this site; (2)go out into the forums and threads that are not dedicated solely to one publisher/comic; and (3) give up your crusade.

not giving a shit is step one.

While I empathize with your point that many people equate comic fans with smelly cosplayers at comicon, I have to point out that your reaction to anyone not reading superhero comics is just as closed minded, obnoxious, and incorrect. If you don't like it when people laugh at you for reading X-men, then extend the courtesy you would like to recieve to people who, say, prefer Optic Nerve or The Invisibles.

I was more referring to something along the lines of not letting the fact that some people look down on folks who read comics make them angry. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not okay to be angry about it, but you probably won't find many others at CBR who share that anger. Also, I don't think the stigma of reading comic books is directly comparable to the kind of discrimination Black individuals have faced because people who read comic books haven't, by virtue of reading comic books, faced discrimination in terms of employment, education, housing opportunities, and violation of rights.

If I do get snobbish, it's because I find most people don't understand my taste in comics and I react.

But especially on this site it seems to be cool to bash Rob Liefeld, when I feel most people don't really get what he is trying to say with his artwork.

Take his character, Smash. Most people see him as a Hulk ripoff, but the comic is actually an homage, that takes the basic premise of Hulk and exaggerates certain aspects to make you think about what it is you're reading.

Most people don't get that and just laugh at Rob and at me. And it gets annoying.

So I apologize if I offended you with my knee-jerk reaction. I think I just became a snob to counter the snobbery I encountered. You know, "laugh at others before they laugh at you".

I never liked Neil Gaiman either. Even his supposedly great work like Sin City is basically an attempt to do exactly what Rob Liefeld had been doing for years.

The vast majority of comic book readers do not fall into the stereotype you describe. Like many stereotypes, it stems from a poor use of statistics causing one to assume that traits exhibited by outstanding members of a particular group will be exhibited my the majority of the group.

There is nothing embarrassing about reading comic books. I am sorry if you feel that there is. As an art form it has proven its legitimacy, and awareness and acceptance of it among the general populace is continually on the rise.

I find that many people around me have not read comics but are quite open to doing so. It is simply a matter of finding them a comic book which aligns with their own interests.

A good first step for you might be to not be embarrassed by the comics you read. Read them whenever you like and don't be afraid to discuss them with your peers. You may generate interest or at least awareness. Good luck.

Good luck.
F*cking Phds.

Well, look at you, showing off with your correctly spelled words and punctuation and stuff!

I bet you don't even move your lips when you read, do you?

And sometimes he drinks a glass of water, while Knobby Mapleface keeps on talking.

It's awesome. "Im not the dummy... You're the dummy!!"

I don't think someone should be embarrassed about read comics, but I do think its embarrassing when someone talks about them 24/7 and speak of them as if they are reality! I've met people like that! Not too many of them, but I've seen it.
