Absolutely fantastic - best arc Confidential has given us, easily.
It was like watching an episode of The Animated Series or re-reading the O'Neill run - New Dawn fits in well with your "Joker's Five Way Revenges" and "Laughing Fishes" and "Demon's Quest" type stories. And I love how ridiculously appropriate it is for 60's lamewad King Tut to come back as a master of the deathtrap warehouse, just like how a pyramid would have deathtraps. (I chuckle wondering if he hired El Sombrero to build it or did it by hand ...)
Riddler was great, in all his quick thinking, sarcastic, backstabbing, criminal glory - but the key thing is he was Riddler ... not a killer. A charismatic thief and game-player who loves his crime contests with Batman. He is the quintessential pop criminal, and he's pretty versatile for a guy who isn't heavy on the physical side. Still, being thin and spry has its advantages, and we still don't know how he escaped Arkham this time around ...
Tut is appropriately crazy. The final two pages with Ankh are great. Who knows if Tut's been in Arkham all along or whatever because the story retroactively fits him into the past in 70's style, but I'd love to see him come back into the Rogue's Gallery (then again, I'm a guy who's pushing for the active return of Maxie Zeus).
I love the mood, the art, the colors as well. And the tight, well-reigned cast of characters ... only five, six main characters, and the murder victims, basically.
I'll admit I was hesitant to pick up the first issue and didn't until the second had come out (as much as I love the 60's show I didn't think bringing King Tut into the comics would be as successful as it is). But this is probably the best Batman story I've read in 2009 so far ...
DC - this creative team needs more Batman gigs!

I swear, I came to this board just to say this!
Were the past 27 issues of Batman Confidential this good?
I picked this up for Garcia-Lopez but the story kicked ass. I want to see more King Tut stories, its been a long time since we've had a good deathtrap using villain story, no one does them anymore. If he actually embalmed his victims it would take things to the next level.

Now that would've been cool, perhaps even as a way to gain henchmen....... Embalming them alive, then bringing them out after oxygen deprivation permanently warps their minds.

I rarely say this about confidential arcs. but this was awesome, I want to see more work from this creative team, and I would love to see king tut introduced into the mainstream dcu batman verse. now would be a great opportunity with all the status quo changes and stuff, new villains like adam bomb are getting their shine on, why not tut?
cool arc.

No.
There's some decent reading in there ... but nothing that hits you like a breath of fresh air like A New Dawn has ...

Were the past 27 issues of Batman Confidential this good?
Issues 26 & 27, yeah, since they were parts 1 & 2 of this storyline.

Best art on Batman in a while. They should be the regular pencilers or at least semi-regular if they can't produce a monthly book. (I hear Quitely will need someone to alternate with him on Batman and Robin)

And not just in any one regard either ... I want more of the sharp writing, the great art, the coloring, more Riddler (always), the dark knight detective ... and yeah, the natural feeling you get of "oh boy, I wonder what'll happen if King Tut ever turns up again!" as well.
I suppose more Ankh running around in lace undergarments wouldn't hurt either.

Great review for the arc

This was awesome and this is what I'd like to see every month.
Besides I find myself always agreeing with Tim Callahan's reviews, we share the same sensibilities.

Great review and I mostly agree, except I thought the four part Wrathchild story arc by tony bedard was awesome.

wrathchild by tony bedard was awesome.
I just bought the third issue and agree with the reviews here. As smoothly told as this story was, the writers really had to walk a fine line in telling this tale as they ran the very real risk of either making Batman look stupid by having the Riddler contribute too much to solving this case or vice versa. In the end, they succeeded in telling a story worthy of Garcia Lopez's incredible art. Some great touches:
- Riddler conceding that Batman is accomplished enough at solving riddles that he'd only be in the way if he tagged along. However, when it comes to anticipating them, he has Batman outsmarted.
- Handcuffs being snapped onto the Riddler one moment as he asks Batman to let him help, handcuffs being handed back to the police as he continues his plea without missing a beat.
- The Riddler taking notes on how Batman deals with Tut's deathtraps so that he can better his own "next time"
- It might have been a little thing, but I liked how Batman took the scythe from Tut's tomb telling the Riddler "You never know what will come in handy" only to not have to use the scythe at all after that. In any other story it would have been the tool that Batman used to free himself with at the end of the issue, here it was "What am I still carrying this thing around for?"

I'd pretty much written off Batman Confidential. looks like should check this out though.
wrathchild by tony bedard was awesome.
Seconded. With the proper tweaking, I think Wrath could be the premiere Nightwing villain.
Looks like the Metal Men newspaper strip will be Garcia Lopez's follow-up to this three-parter. I really suggest that anyone who liked his art on the Tut storyline click on the link.
