Before Routh was cast, several other actors were considered for the part of Superman. If Routh was rejected, which alternative would you have chosen?

While the project was under Brett Ratner's supervision, actors Josh Hartnett, Paul Walker, Matthew Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Ashton Kutcher, David Boreanaz, Ian Somerhalder, Henry Cavill and Jerry O'Connell were considered for the part of Superman. Brett Ratner left the project primarily because he and Warner Bros. executives could not agree on whom to cast as Superman.

James Caviezel expressed great interest in the role of Superman, but director Bryan Singer refused to cast him because he felt that Caviezel was "too famous" after starring in The Passion of the Christ (2004).

Excerpts are from http://www.starswelove.com/trivia_detail.htm?refid=31 (didn't check how accurate they were.

Out of those I think Henry Cavill would have been the best bet but he still would have looked pretty young unless they did something to make him seem older looks wise like buff him up considerably.

I probably wouldn't have chosen any of them. I think a complete unknown is the best way to go. Superman should be bigger than the actor.

He played Jesus. That's kind of bigger than Supes

The movie Passion of the Christ was big and so was the part, but the actor kinda still lives in obscurity. He's still not a household name. I think that makes him a relative unknown. I didn't evn know who he was until I read the article.

Ya, but once he's cast it's going to be well known that Jesus (or the guy that played him) is playing Superman. Plus, I'm not sure such an optimistic character os really for Cavizel. He played Edmund Dantès in another Count of Monte Cristo flick. And a bum mooching off of Haley Joel Osmond in Pay It Forward. Not sure what else he's been in, I think those are the only ones I've seen.

Yeah, but I don't want someone so unknown that it seems like the director just picked them off the street (which they actually seem to do sometimes). I want a seasoned actor who just hasn't made a name for themselves. Christian Bale is a perfect example of one such actor. Before he did Batman Begins he got around here and there. You were familiar with him, but not so much that you actually remembered his name.

I can't tell, are you joking about Nic Cage? I would have put realtive unknowns, but I didn't have enough room in the poll  j/k

Brendan Fraser was my second choice; James Caviezel being my first.

Brendan Fraser? Seriously?

Couldn't take him seriously, personally. Too goofy looking at times. He just doesn't have the right look, nor is that good an actor. And I enjoyed him in some of his movies. But Superman he isn't.

I also don't see Superman on Caviezel. He is not very handome. His nose is so weird. His look is just too depressing for Supes, IMO.

And unknown is the best option. I want to see Superman on the screen, not another actor pretending to be Superman.

He has Clark Kent written all over him. All this pic needs are the glasses. His goofiness would perfectly accent his role as Clark Kent. Fraser only comes across as goofy because he's humble. He doesn't take himself so seriously that he's too good for this and that. That's the type of moral humility that the role of Superman would need. He can be serious too.

And I hate posting pics like these, but I just want to point out that he can fill out a Superman costume pretty easily.

As for James Caviezel, I honestly think it would be interesting to see the guy who played Jesus play Superman. I'm interested in his interpretation. He's more of a gamble though. I really haven't seen enough of his movies to make a fair assessment.

Try these pics instead...

Caviezel's more romantic side... potential for romance with actress who plays Lois.

Just no.... no. None of these would have made a good Superman and I'm glad none of them got the role.

Honestly, I agree with those who say it should be an unknown, I think that an unknown would be the best way to go to allow the audience to completely buy this person on the screen as Superman.

Having seen Matthew Bomer on Chuck, he might've done a nice job. I'd prefer a relative unknown though, much like Hugh Jackman before Wolverine.
