I just ran across the variant cover of Journey Into Mystery 76. Apparently there were some covers printed with a 10 cent price and these were overprinted with black over the price and a new 12 cent price inside the logo.

My 90s era Overstreet makes no mention of this.

Is this a relatively new discovery? Did the printing plant actually do the overprint or was this done by someone else?

Has anyone read an article about this somewhere?

The last Overstreet I bought was the 36th edition, and they mention it there.

One listing for #76 is Gd---15 all the way to Nm---$240.

Then there's a listing that says 76-(10 cent cover price blacked out, 12 cent printed on.), and the price range there is $37 to $625.

I see your ebay example calls the 10 cent cover "scarce." I also notice it's a 12 cent cover that looks home made.

There is more abnormalities to both of those covers. The font for the "12¢" is not the standard one Marvel was using at the time. The one used here looks to be presstype.

My guess is that both books were printed for foreign markets. I'm also guessing that the black overprint is/was for covers that were printed before the price increase was decided upon. Rather than throw away however many they preprinted (covers were printed a month or so before the interior books were), they set them aside for foreign consumption. I'm thinking Australia or New Zealand as the port(s) of destination.

Here's one with the standard 12 cent font:

I'm checking the Atlas Tales website to see if there might be some other examples of the 12c pricetag on other titles.

No luck so far, but I did note a couple of titles that held onto the ten cent price for an extra month (Millie the Model for one).

There are 3 titles that had these variants... here are scans of all of them. http://stlcomics.com/cover_gallery/categories.php?cat_id=156&sessionid=9cbfd4ccbbd01318ecd41fb01effb89b

And our Variant (and cryptic) resident expert comes to our rescue.

Thanks Metarog. I knew there was a couple of other Marvel/Atlas comics that only had a two month lead distributions, along with JIM/laterThor. Makes sense that they would be the ones with the stale 10 cent labels on the covers, since they would have print and distribution deadlines of one week earlier.

I'm willing to chalk this up to age and my faulty memory, but I could swear to having seen a Tales of Suspense (an issue in the 20's? maybe #25?) with the blacked out price and a 12¢ overprint.
