Another ID from the cobwebs of my mind

Folks,
I'm looking for an ID of a comic book from the last 20 years or so. I believe it was a Gaimen/Vess thing set in fairy. A fairy creature attempted to place an object in the pocket of a boy, so the creature could yell theif! and ensnare the boy for 7 and 70 years as his slave. The creature was caught in the act, and the creature was made to make reparations to the boy, and out of its burrow a 'wind egg' was produced.

It might have been in the sandman series or perhaps the original four issue mini of the Books of Magic.

Any ideas?

I believe you're thinking of The Books of Magic #3 -- the squarebound, prestige format miniseries, not the later ongoing series. And it's a mundane egg, not a wind egg.
