View Full Version : Anyone Miss The Super Cape?

When Superman was rebooted one of the things John Byrne mistakenly got rid of in my opinion were Superman's invulnerable outfits. Superman now had a "force field" around his body so anything close to his skin would be protected by it, hence the main costume was fine after fights, but the cape would be in tatters. `Granted, it became almost a running gag that everything from Krypton that was placed under a yellow sun became super, but I loved the cape that couldn't be destroyed. And one of the gimmicks I loved most of all was the fact that it was super elastic and was almost limitless in its stretching ability and he'd often use it to restrain bad guys because they obviously couldn't get out of it.

Anyone else miss this prime bit of Silver Age fun?

No. I like seeing his cape get torn and burned. Gives the character flavor, seeing him ragged from a fight. He's still able to look regal despite having a tattered cape or costume. Plus, having his cape stretch like that is beyond silly even for the Silver Age standard. And I didn't even know that until now.

Oh, it was wonderful!

I prefer the old cape. But I can't really say I miss it because I don't read the current titles and don't consider the post-Byrne Superman as canon. I'm too busy reading the Weisinger and Schwartz era stuff.

One of the first Superman books I ever read had him save a town from flooding by tying his cape to radio towers around town. The rain waters filled his cape,he wrapped it up and flew off. I thought it was cool then. Now I think those must have been kryptonian radio towers to hold up all that water. I do not miss the cape it was rather silly.

I would like to see the cape go away completely. But, since that isn't going to happen, having it being ripped and torn on occasion does add a sense of realism to it. Indestructible clothes is pretty silly.

I can see where one might miss it, but sacrificing the indestructible costume for better visuals of battle damage is a good tradeoff to me.

Back in the Silver Age the cape needed to be indestructable since he stored his Clark Kent clothes in the hidden pouch. And it never showed a bulge either

Just wondering, but when did Superman get that "S Shield" on his cape? And does he still have it on his cape? I haven't read much Superman in awhile, and most images of him show him from the front, so I'm not sure about that.

I believe he still has it ....

Even though the cape takes damage now... it still seems to be extremely durable.

Just the friction of flying super fast in and out of the atmosphere should destroy it but it doesn't.

I don't miss the 'super cape' or the indestructible clothes. If they're "unstable molecules" I guess that's one thing, but "Kryptonian fibers" never stuck with me... strangely, I never had too much of a problem with that weird "mutant fibers" thing from the blue/gold era of X-Men (acts like body armor & regulates temperature). Weird.

Anyway, no missing of the cape here. It'd be nice if they TRIED a new costume without a cape... give 'em a chance to design a 'new' suit for him but use it for some off-world trip or something so they could claim it's a 'space suit' if the fanboys react negatively. All he's gotta say is "I'm going to some other world where they don't know me, figured I'd try a new look" and if really necessary they could probably come up with some reason he HAD to wear the new suit on that adventure, like it nudges that system's slightly-less-yellow solar rays in the right direction so they can power him up. It's hard to mess with a classic, though.

The S-Sheild on the cape began appearing during the mid 40's, but I cannot recall the specific year off hand. But it went through many iterations as well. For a stretch of time, it was similar to the one on his chest, before becoming yellow. It is still on his cape today. In "Countdown To Final Crisis" #50 or 49, I think it was, artist Jim Califore (sp) added a nice visual by having it on the inside of his cape as well. Though it made the cape look to be rather thin.

Outside of the comics, it was missing in all of the cartoons produced since 1996 and was not present in "Superman Returns".

Yes, I miss the super-cape and it's stretchy abilities that Superman would use for various tasks like covering an explosion. I wonder if the current cape still has the little hidden pouch where Superman would store his Clark Kent glasses?

He has the pouch, but he doesn't keep his clothes and glasses in there. He leaves them behind at the Daily Planet, unless he plans to be Clark when he goes somewhere.

Didn't he keep a pager in there once?

Not sure if he did, but yeah, it'd be in the same place. His wallet, keys, press pass, note book, cellphone, wedding ring, black berry and anything else that Superman shouldn't have would be kept with his stuff at the Planet. The clothes are either kept in the storage closet across the hall from the newsroom or in the Planet's globe. Depending on where he rushes out to change to Superman at the Planet.

I don't. I like the torn cape look after a battle.

I like battle torn clothes. A cape you can stretch to hold 10thousand gallons of water is a little to silver age. Actually, its pretty dumb. What I really want is for them to get rid of the underwear on the outside, screw the cape!

Yeah, I like seeing Superman torn and bloody after battle. I really dislike how in most current artistic representations of his death, he's shown with little more than a bloody nose.
