I admit that the awesomeness of Guy Davis is substantial but I only came to realize this when I read B.P.R.D. Plague of Frogs #5. The composition of the pages is awesome. These new images hint at even greater art in the upcoming P.P.R.D. series. I can't wait!

those took forever to load...danged dial up... but were well worth the wait. Thanks for posting them. The only BPRD book that i have been able to lay my hands on thus far has been Hollow Earth, must find plague of frogs.

Nick?- What are these for? covers, just drawings or pinups what? `cuz the first one looks like a cover from The Dead, so i'm wondering if LoJo will be in the new series.

none the less, beautiful drawings!

But that guy with Lobster Johnson is Guy's own character isn't it?

Johann- Sorry to get your hopes up, but no LOJo in the Dead (at least as far as I know). These are pieces I commissioned these from Guy a few months back.

Jakob- The other dude is one of the Nevermen (from the Nevermen by Phil Amara and Guy). I'm sure you can find the books on ebay or another online store (& you should). :)

Yup, I did originally ask for the Murderist, but I thought a Neverman would work better so I asked Guy to change it. :)

Guy Davis is the NICEST guy! (yes I still call him Guy (rhymes with me) in my head)

He did this one for us just 'cause he's such a sweety! Gary and I both love the submarine in Plague of Frogs. He is aparently eager to trade us glass for original Guy Davises! woo hoo!!! I may have to hold out for a page from the Black Flame!! mmmmmm Black Flame!

Looks like I gently crossed the line at some point recently and I am now a comic art collector - Kool!

Thanks Guy - you rock!

I finally got to read The Marquis: Danse Macabre myself just a few days ago - all thanks to Guy himself, who sent me the individual issues since I haven't been able to find the TPB anywhere after months of searching. More proof of this thread's title being accurate!

The Marquis is a really, really good read. I made the mistake of starting on the first issue at four in the morning and couldn't stop until I read all five issues. Brilliant story, great art and I can't wait until Guy gets the next story out.

for me, the best of Guy's work is the second arc of the Baker street. I got It only few months ago and I just can't stop myselth from reading it over and over again. I love the fact, that the world shown there is something totally unknown to me. Still waiting for that final Baker street arc...

Morna knew that I really like the pages in BPRD: Plague of Frogs that show the cool Victorian submarine. She wanted to buy one of those pages as a gift for me and asked Guy if they are for sale. He replied that he is hanging onto those pages but look what he did... An awesome 8 1/2 x 11" drawing of the submarine with Abe in the foreground. Woo hoo, thanks you Guy, it's a fantastic drawing!

I apologize for being too lazy to dig up the thread. I wanted to share a little nugget of Guy's awesomeness with the board.

A family member of mine ordered his sketch book and one of the marquis art prints for me and let him know it was for my birthday. He included an abe sapien sketch (not a preprinted thing) autographed to me as well as BPRD: The Black Flame #6 and an issue of The Marquis (both autographed!). I was very surprised to see the extra stuff when I opened up my gifts.

If you see this Guy, thanks man!

God, Guy is so amazing.

I remember, years ago, seeing some of his work and thinking poorly of it... but I bought The Dead for a friend before Christmas, and read it, and it blew my socks off.

John and Guy are on fire with B.P.R.D., the book is just spectacularly good. Guy's art is so textured and sophisticated that it makes my head hurt... and makes me green with envy.

I love that HB versus Nazi Robot piece!!

Not to knock Guy at all, as I'm one of his biggest fans, but I think his version of Hellboy is actually getting better as he spends more time with this universe of characters! Thankfully it's not a ripoff of Mike's work (and is completely Guy all the way), but looks enough like something Mike would do to be more like an homage' piece...if that makes sense. :D

Tad

Beautiful piece. Anybody else would use a low angle so all they'd have to draw is the sky behind them but this is Guy's sense of pattern and detail going nuts.

I don't see anything Mignola about it other than the character. The blacks aren't similar, the porportions are different, I think this is 100% Guy drawing Hellboy.

Neil Hill

Yeah, I picked up several early BPRD pages from Guy recently, and I just want to say again how completely amazing this guy (no pun intended) is!! Super talented, super friendly, always doing extra little sketches which he includes with the pages he sends, and (as if there needed to be an and) he includes free shipping with the pieces he sells! And anyone who's made Original Art purchases in the past via snail mail can, I'm sure, empathize with how much s/h can end up costing sometimes. The fact that he includes that with his pages prices is just one small indicator of how truly cool this artist is!

In a day and age where many (artists and regular folk alike) are all about the bottom line, Guy is that rare person who seems utterly real, completely willing to give more than is expected, and definitely deserving of much wider recognition.

OK, I've waxed on and now I have to wipe this tear from my eye. ;-)

As a side note; Guy sent me a small Abe sketch along with the pages described above, which I'll be getting around to posting a scan of soon.

Your aces Guy! Never stop being you! :D

For those who have EVER doubted the awesomeness of Guy Davis...don't ever do that again! :p Feast your eyes on these sketches I received with several Universal Machine pages I purchased recently.

I can't say enough how much I love Guy's artwork! I literally cannot wait for the next BPRD mini to begin. :D

Wow, that original stuff is so cool. If he opens up for commissions again, I might have to buy one. Hopefully I'll have some money if he does. It took me a long time to get used to someone other than Mike drawing a Hellboy universe story, but after I got over it, I really like his stuff a lot.

I know what you mean. Although I was probably more ready to embrace Guy on BPRD than some (as I'd loved his Black Water story and had seen his work in Marquis and Sandman Mystery Theatre), I was skeptical as to how much I'd enjoy the series overall. Guy proves consistently that he was the absolute right guy for this job!

Yeah, i loved the Dark Water story as well, it was the best of the BPRD one shots (that under the bed one..peeeyew). Guy's black and white art is as good as the colour art and i can pick out more things from my Dark Water and Plague pages than i can from the same pages in comic form

Neil Hill

(that under the bed one..peeeyew).

Yeah, I completely missed that particular story because the artwork was just not what I considered to be "up to par" (no offense intended towards Adam Pollina the artist) for a Hellboy book. That one for me was kind of the point where the Hellboy Tales stuff jumped the shark.

Im liking Davis more and more.

He has a great and his own art style. Its also nice that his art reminds me a little just alittle of Mignola.

Hope he stays long with BPRD and if someone else than Mignola is gonna draw new Abe or new Lobster mini it should be him.

Has anyone read any Nevermen? I read a little blurb about one of the tpb and I've been trying to scout one out in my local shops...
I wasnt actually all that impressed with Davis in the beginning, but now I'm converted:) His artwork is brilliant, I think my fears were that he wouldnt live upto Mignola, but I love the direction the BPRD stuff has taken.

But never two more different artists will you find. I find it interesting that you thought to compare the two and hope that Guy would "live up to" Mignola's work. I think I know what you mean though. You wanted the quality of Guy's work to match Mignola's, as Guy is working on Hellboy related characters. In that way I can understand.

ChrisTheHomunculus
09-11-2006, 08:02 AM
Part of why I love Hellboy so much is the style of Mignola's artwork, so moving to another artist (whose work I had never actually seen) who is stylistically so different was something that slightly worried me...
I'm glad that the delivery alleviated my fears!

Guy (with the help of Web-guru Nate Pride) updated his site

I'm proud to see his 2nd Mouse Guard Pin-up there and am still in love with his Dick Tracey Villians!

I'm just in love with his artwork period.

BTW folks, Guy's been a working artist for 20 years now! Drop him a line and congratulate him on a more than distinguished career thus far. Here's to another 20 years plus Guy! (raises glass in toast)

Now I just want to know when someone is going to produce an Art of Guy Davis career retrospective?! C'mon Dark Horse. It's more than time. :D

The sketchbook he put out last year had a nice range of stuff from sandman through BPRD. The sketchbook was large 8x11-ish with 56 pages.

According to his site he has some left!

and yes, Guy is deserving of a real art-of book

Thanks Petersen. I've seen the sketchbook but (and I mean no offense to Guy), much of the work is very obviously printed from computer scans and just doesn't have the vitality that a more handsome TPB or hard cover version (with higher production values) would have. Just a thought and nothing more.

I've said it before..i really disliked the style when i first saw it..yes a naysayer initially. But was i ever wowed by what, even though i know is a lot of work, just seems so simple. Guy draws everything so well, from monsters to people to gadgets, that is really makes a welcome change in one regard from mike's work. Plus in the two times I've ordered pages from Guy, i really like how he personalized the art via a little drawn sketch each time..it's those little things. He sent me a Marquis issue autographed as well, which was my introduction to that character also. See? he knows what he's doing..he's introducing new readers to his creator owned things. Is that sneaky or smart?

First, you must give up all pretense of a normal life- to include living in a house, bathing, worldly possessions, etc. al. Second, join a Hari Krishna cult and give out flyers at your local airport. Third, you must take a vow of permanent celibacy. After you've done those things call me. I'll be waiting patiently by the phone. :p

Baker Street is one of my favorite of Guy's books; unfortunately, it's hella obscure and hard to track down.

Good observation Mike. Yeah, Hellboy pages are virtually impossible to find for less than $300-400 unless you purchase from the artist himself, and even those aren't cheap.

As far as Guy's prices skyrocketing, as you said, time will tell.

Speaking of Craig Rasseau (well, only indirectly). Sir, I've recently had the pleasure of turning a friend on to your book Perhapanauts. I gave him a copy or two of your current series in a stack of other stuff, and almost by accident he really glomed onto your stuff! He's only a sometimes comic reader (only as he's given stuff by me for the most part), but lately he's actually made an effort to track down Perhapanauts back issues and even has a copy of your comic hanging in his cube at work. In other words, way to go sir! Your product speaks for itself of course, and it's been my pleasure to bring one more person into the the fold of fans enjoying your book.

Been a massive fan of Guy's since i stumbled across Sandman Mystery Theatre when i was a boy. I wasn't really into comics back then, but the art stuck with me and a couple of years back i was lucky enough to get that entire series on eBay.

I try to check out everything Guy is involved with, and i absolutely love the Marquis and the Nevermen.

I couldn't believe my luck when Guy took over art chores on BPRD... two of my most favouritest things in the world coming together in perfect harmony. Guy is probably the only artist that i think really truly gives Mignola a run for his money.

I'm all excited cos i recently bought some Sandman Mystery Theatre pages from Guy. I haven't heard back from him yet, but i can't wait. I wish i could have afforded some BPRD stuff, but sadly i'm a pauper.

Anyways sorry for being so longwinded, but yeah Guy is awesome. :D

In reviewing this thread I discovered that I never posted this little beauty that Guy and Rosey drew for us when we were at the Motor City Con in May. We had been chatting about pets and our home lives earlier so when Morna and I asked him to do a sketch for us I asked for a steampunk cyborg feeding their pet rabbit Hazel (that's a tough-guy male rabbit like in Watership Down). Guy said that he had to ask Rosey to draw the rabbit because he tried a few and they all looked like monsters. I love his use of grey marker that we’ve seen in many of the sketches posted here.

Well, it's done..i sold one of my 2 Guy BPRD pages, so i could in turn pick up another one which i more preferred, this time from Universal Machine. Neil, i totally understand and if i could have scrapped the cash to keep both, it would have been great, but this time, a page with Abe, Hellboy and Darryl trumped all..pics when it arrives!

Guy Davis is indeed officially teh awesome. I bought some pages of comic art from him a few weeks ago, but there was a wee bit of trouble with his email account which meant i didn't recieve a reply from him until yesterday and i was getting kinda worried. Anyways i bought four pages... and here is where the Guy being awesome part kicks in... not only did he throw in a fifth page for free, but cos of the email mix-up he also threw in a free copy of his sketchbook!

Also also, i'm working on pitching an Edwardian horror/fantasy comic to Dark Horse, and he gave me some excellent advice. Mr Davis is a prince among men.

Weird question, and I don't know if somebody already asked it or not... But did Guy Davis do an album cover for the bluesman Guy Davis?

I was sniffing around Amazon this morning and I found this cover to Legacy, the award-winning album by Guy Davis. (http://www.amazon.com/Legacy-Guy-Davis/dp/B0002IQI5Q/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-9489336-4796013?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1190645070&sr=8-2) Sure looks like Guy's work to me. If this is the case, I'd just like to say, "That's totally awesome."

Looks like you're eyes were correct. Taken from the CD's product description:

The CD's packaging is particularly inventive. The booklet includes a tongue-in-cheek "comic book" story of Guy and the Devil at the crossroads drawn by the "other Guy Davis" - the acclaimed graphic novel illustrator.

And from Guy's site:
BLUES REVIEW MAGAZINE
The current OCT/NOV issue of Blues Revue magazine has a short interview and writeup on the artwork I did for the 2006 Guy Davis Legacy CD— that's the Bluesman Guy Davis whose wonderful music you can find at www.guydavis.com.

I came home from work today and Morna showed me a large flat parcel that had arrived for us(Strangely Canada Post delivered it on Sunday). The parcel was from Guy and it contained four awesome pages from BPRD: Garden of Souls (1 page from issue #2, 1 page from issue #3 and 2 pages from issue #5). Once again Guy went beyond expectations and included two special drawings - one for Morna and one for me. What a generous and truly nice gesture!

The submarine page is truly awesome. Guy did a great job of making it look like it is rusting and deteriorating down in the depths. In our correspondence about the page he told me that he was a big 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea fan when he was a kid and that he loved to draw the Nautilus with special pleasure coming from drawing all of those rivets. He also did a very convincing job of portraying the surface of the sea looking up through the water.

Lovely pages, Gary, truly so!! My favorite would have to be the page where Abe is getting the stuffing beaten out of him by one of the robots- arms lifted high as Abe is tossed like so much flotsum!

I love that Abe is flying right out of the frame. It is a very dynamic page. I really wanted a page that showed that Abe was finally over his prolonged mopey period.

Wow, those pages are beautiful. I love the Victorian cyborgs and I love the submarine.

The sketches are wonderful too! The awesomeness of Guy Davis never wanes.

The design of the cyborgs and the submarine are great steampunk-type devices. Too bad they've been destroyed. The drawings are all fantastic. They seem quite loose but Guy is very much in control of what is happening on these pages. The cyborgs are just delightful mechanical inventions. They look like they were fun to draw and they have all kinds of great expression in their movements and body language. The image of them sitting in chairs with their feet and hands on the floor tickles my funny bone.

Those are cool... i love those diving-suit guys. :D

BTW Gary how long did your stuff take to arrive roughly?

Cyborgs, please.

I don't have a clear answer on that. We made a complex arrangement that involves me sending him something as well but my something was tied up. We started the process a couple of months ago and he doesn't have my something yet. Once he told me he was sending the package it was only a couple of weeks.
