View Full Version : The awesomeness of Guy Davis...

Nice... he even made Nightwing look cool.
Great collection, and yes, I agree that it's no small feet to make Nightwing look this good. :) That cityscape, as drawn by the great Guy Davis, is vertigo inducing!

When I met Guy earlier this year I didn't notice his small feet.:D

I need to point out that I am not a huge Guy fan. His style has a certain "soft doughiness" to it that goes against my natural tendencies. That being said, I absolutely LOVE his work on the BPRD. He has really made that book his own and I can't imagine anyone else (not even Mike) doing a better job. When I think of the BPRD books I think of Guy Davis.
That being said, when I checked out that Nightwing picture I wasn't overly sold on the Nightwing figure (the fact I don't like Nightwing anyway doesn't help) but DAMN! that background is indeed vertigo inducing. Incredible! It actually made me a little dizzy as I was looking at it. Wow. So, while I am not as bowled over by his style like so many, many here, I can still appreciate the awesomeness of Guy Davis' talent.

Although I don't agree with it, your assessment is perfectly valid- different strokes and all that. :D

A little off topic, but i've been doing some Batman character pinups on-and-off for a while now, and i've avoided Nightwing cos i'm not a fan and i think his costume looks awful. Anyways Guy's version above inspired me to take another crack at it, and i came up with something i'm actually happy with (http://simonpimpernel.deviantart.com/art/Nightwing-pinup-72085869). i think the mask and the beady little eyes are where Guy's influence comes through most.

Great thread guys!
I stumbled on it while looking for some reference for a Guy Davis-inspired pin-up I'm doing.
After over a year of looking at every con I did and in every dusty back-issue bin at whatever comic book shop I happened to wander into, I FINALLY stumbled across the first Vol. of Nevermen. Streets of Blood will make more sense now lol.
For once I wasn't even looking! (Isn't that always the way?)
Guys is an amazing artist and from what I hear a terrific fella. I hope to see more of Guy's work on here soon.

As much as I miss getting a Davis BPRD treat every month in the mail, one thing keeps me awake at night these days... It has been mentioned several times that Guy is a mighty fast creator, so it's not like he had to take a break from BPRD in order to... make more BPRD. He has got to be doing something else with his time! And i would love to hear something about a possible new Marquis or even better - a Baker Street wrap!!!

I'm no expert on the coming's and going's in Guys life of course, but I'm pretty sure right now he's getting a head start on the next mini, taking a much deserved break after cranking out series after series for more than a few years running now, and still working on BPRD via the MySpace web comics. No, don't count our boy out yet. He's certainly not resting on his laurels. :)

Over the last couple of days, I re-read all of the BPRD TPBs, just to give myself a refresher on the various plot threads, and in this pass, I found myself liking Guy's art more than I had in the past, although I still don't find his style all that appealing. I know, shocking for a lot of people based on this thread, and I'm not here to piss all over the "awesomeness" part; I freely admit I met Mr. Davis a year or so ago and thanked him for his work on BPRD and got a couple of autographs - if Mignola and others see something there, who am I to balk too much? Besides, while it is hard to extricate the visual side of comics from the scripts, I do find myself - as a comics reader - much more willing to follow writers than illustrators. (Does that sound weird?) The writing in the stories has kept me an intrigued reader ever since Seed of Destruction (and through all the various books and other incarnations of the HB milieu, too).

Hi Everybody,
To join in on the Guy Davis love, I'd like to share a few pieces my wife and I received from Guy a couple of weeks ago. These were also in addition to a Garden of Souls page (old robot guy about to squish Abe with a big rock) and a page from Universal Machine (Kate about to cut off the Marquis's finger) that I've yet to scan.
Capt Daimio is my favorite of the BPRD:
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Page=1&Order=Date&Piece=387296&GSub=60530&GCat=0&UCat=0
Guy did this beautiful Gargoyle for my wife Dawn who is quite obsessed with gargoyles (and therefore this piece):
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Page=1&Order=Date&Piece=387294&GSub=60530&GCat=0&UCat=0
And this piece Guy did in a copy of Zombies That Ate the World that he also sent us as a wedding gift.
http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Page=1&Order=Date&Piece=387297&GSub=60530&GCat=0&UCat=0

Awesomeness indeed.

We love it when Guy sends us the commissions he does, but if he's declining them, it's only because he's SO busy right now. He saved our asses on War on Frogs, at the same time as he was wrapping up the MySpace thing (http://myspace.com/darkhorsepresents?issuenum=8&storynum=1). BPRD: The Warning starts next month, and rolls straight into The Black Goddess, another 5-part BPRD series. In August he's got an 8-pager in Rex Mundi #13—Arvid Nelson's always told me Guy is his favorite artist, so it was a personal quest to hook those two up on a story. Guy's doing architectural and monster designs for the Solomon Kane series that I'm writing, because no one can do that like Guy—and he'll be drawing some backups for Mike in The Wild Hunt. Also, we're gonna be making an announcement at San Diego pertaining Guy (annnnd, speculate!). And there are other Hellboy-related series we want him to draw, because for 9 out of 10 ideas Mike has, Guy's the absolute best person to draw them—but even Guy Davis is only so fast. (And me saying that will probably make him just a little bit faster, 'cause he loves a challenge ...)

I use to read Sandman Mystery Theather before so i thought Guy Davis was awesome before BPRD. Having reading alot of BPRD lately i have been remembering how much i enjoyed his style.
Anyone know if there are trades for his other works in print ? Interested in Marquis series.
There are two Marquis trades and they are wonderfully dark and twisted. I also recommend Honour Among Punks : The Complete Baker Street Graphic Novel.

Yeah Guy has been kicking ass since Baker Street. The Marquis is coming back finally too.
Baker Street should have been a movie by now.

I just made my first Guy Davis original purchase today and I am psyched! I have been working with Guy on it for a few weeks and he is a great "guy" to deal with. He truly wants to help you get the piece that you are looking for. I bought 2 sketch books and 1 piece from the Killing Ground that I will post when it arrrives. I most definitely plan on buying more from him in the future.
I picked up this beauty at Heroes last month.
Guy had his portfolio with him.

Guy is one of the NICEST creators out there and you can't go wrong with a Davis piece of art.

When I met him back in Chicago ComicCon around 1990 he was really into the Goth lifestyle (Baker Street) and he had the black leather biker jacket and a red spiked mohawk. He was very colorful at the time while the rest of us were wearing black shirts, black pants and trench coats. I preferred the denim jeans and flannel shirts. Vince Locke was also there and I think he was really in to P.I.B. (person in black) look.
A very good reason to dust off this thread...
