As kind of a personal project, I'm working on writing up an ending to the Superman story, meaning his death or at least some sort of static happily-ever-after. It's for my own interest.

I'm curious as to how other people would end the story. I've looked at a number of future stories that compete the Superman story, so I'm wondering what other fans think:

How should it end?

I always think of it all ending in a way similar to part 3 of "Destroyer" (the last episode of Justice League Unlimited)

With Superman, having just saved the world, surrounded by reporters (including Lois and Jimmy). He hears something else that needs his attention halfway around the world and flies off with everyone looking on in wonder.

In my head, the last panel has Superman flying off, his cape flowing with the wind, and a caption that in some way references the "never-ending battle."

Honeslty one of my all time favorite endings for Superman was the epilouge to the Gog story in he recent JSA series. It showed Kal as an old man on a crowded street 1000 years in the future watching the Legion of Super Heroes fly over head and Kal just smiling.

To me that was one of the most touching and best fitting endings for a character ever.

Something like "Thy Kingdom Come"/"One World Under Gog" or "DC 1 Million", where you see the legend live on. Both endings leave us with a strong sense of hope, which Superman is all about.

...with the Earth about to explode and Clark and Lois sending their only son away in a space pod?

I always liked how Allstar Superman portrayed Superman's future. The comic presented the idea that Superman would keep evolving for centuries becoming stronger and more powerful and he would build on his legacy by forming a League of Supermen. I don't think it was in the last issue, but in issue #6. I think the Superman of the far future existed in the form of solar-radio consciousness.

I also agree with Roger Smith. I like the Justice League Unlimited ending as well. Basically Superman is fighting Darkseid. During the battle he reveals that he is much stronger then anyone could imagine and that he just holds back his full power because he's gentle and doesn't want to accidentally hurt the more frail beings around him.

There's also the idea of how Superman of Earth-two ends his story.

Kal-L is erased from Earth's history after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, but survives and enters a "paradise" dimension, where he remains until the events of Infinite Crisis. Shortly after his wife passes away, Kal-L dies at the conclusion of Infinite Crisis battling Superboy-Prime.

So basically as one Superman disappears watching the universe from the paradise dimension and the other Superman takes his place.

No, that's Mark Millar with "Red Son".

That's the one that ties into "DC 1 Million", also written by Morrison. "Thy Kingdom Come"/"One World Under Gog" followed the idea of Clark living well into the 30th century where he witnesses the Legion of Super-Heroes debut, ushering a new age of costumed heroics and he's there to watch it, in the crowd, looking like Jonathan Kent.

Really? I never read Red Son.

I never realized those other comics tied into one another. I guess I have to read them.

He defeats the greatest challenge posed to humanity. He finds suitable replacements to take his place so he can live happily ever after with Lois. Possibility left open that if the world ever needs him, he shall return.

But what is humanities greatest challenge?

Finding out how many licks it takes to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop.

Well yes, but the most memorable part of the finale was the fight scene.

here's the fight scene...

This shows them running down the stairs. Apparently they were all chasing after all the DC villains. I think the statement was that it was Superman and the League's mission to hunt criminals and so the story ends with them continuing to do what they always do, vigilantly fighting crime.

Personally, I thought that was lame for an otherwise awesome ending.

Head start!? Why not end with an epic battle? Oh well, at least it wasn't a cut to black.

Honestly, it's just such a great ending, I can't imagine the story ending any other way and still feel right.

I think humanities greatest challenge is to better ourselves and strive for greater purpose. I always like the Superman Returns trailer because it suggested that Superman was sent to help man move in the direction of a Utopian future. So maybe humanities greatest challenge is creating the utopia.

I always like the ending of DC One Million... which I suppose could be seen as a continuation of All-Star Superman... where Superman finally emerges from the sun after 10,000 some years or so... reunites with Lois, on a newly revived Krypton to forever live happily ever after....

I will take...

-After somehow creating an Utopia with his strengths and somebody elses

-Won the last epic battle that also was an ideological while still being a real physical one

-Wink at the end, not to the audience or the book reader but to some one else so the fourth wall is not directly broken BUT done in a way the reader may feel the wink was for him.

That or saying "Really! with my glasses I look COMPLETLY different! " sorry... couldnt help the joke xD

Oh yeah also

- Luthorīs ultimate fail, as he was the prime villain of him and his ideology of greed and the like failing with him after the figth.... maybe he fought Luthor.. dk

The ending in "Destroyer" was meant to highlight the generational aspects of the DCU heroes, by going backwards from those created this last decade, on back to the Trinity. The last shot is of Batman who started the DCAU back in 1992. This was just a quick ending put together because the real ending was "Epilogue", which was the previous season.
