I'm pretty new to the DCU, but I've read two of these, Legion and Brainaic. Now with Legion, the writing is very good throughout and the artwork is fantastic(Gary Frank is definitely one of my favorite artists now), but I still didn't care too much about the story. I think its because I just don't give a **** about the Legion of Superheroes. Its too "Silver-Age" nonsense to me.

Brainiac, on the other hand, which I just finished reading like 30 seconds ago, was fan-****ing-tastic. It has all the above gifts(Geoff Johns/Gary Frank awesomeness), but the plot really feels like "Holy crap, the Earth is screwed this time." Brainiac is a legitimate threat to Superman; he's the smartest dude in the universe, but he's also a big physical adversary too now. The designs for his ship/droids/pods were also so, so incredible. Supergirl is actually a pretty cool character here as well, although I don't wanna spoil the great ending. LOOOOVED it.
