Let's hope so. The previous one certainly was so in name only.

When you're twelve games deep, you're long past due for a change. 13's combat doesn't look anything like past FF games either.

FF12 is one of the longer games in the series

When you're twelve games deep, you're long past due for a change. 13's combat doesn't look anything like past FF games either.Haven't most of the FF games been pretty muchcompletely stand alone with each one its very own game system?

I wasn't refering to gameplay but mostly to the story and characters.

One gameplay element that really hurt FFXII was the completely identical characters. They all had identical stats and all of them were just as good as fighters, mages, thiefs...

And characterisation was largely non-existant. Only two of the characters were remotely involved in th main quest. The main character (who had no discernable function in the plot) didn't speak as much as three lines to his childhood friend in the entire game.

It's because of stuff like that that I call FFXII Final Fantasy in name only.

FF12 is one of the longer games in the seriesI suppose it depends how much time one spends on the mini quests and side games like the card games and such in earlier FF games, which XII was sorely lacking in.

The last Final Fantasy game I actually enjoyed playing was IX.

I severly hated 10 because of its characters. It had not a single person worth caring about, yet I completed it anyway out of needed closure.

12 was basically Star Wars. You had the young kid reaching for the stars. The princess in trouble needing help against the Empire. The rogue smuggler and his strange-looking companion, who even had bounty hunters after them. The deep-voiced black-armored badass villain who evetually turns good. The wise, experienced former soldier who had a close connection to said villain.

Sure, there were moments when it eventually became its own story but I didn't enjoy playing it enough to warrant a second go-around (which is rare for me and a FF game). I've played 6, 7, 8 & 9 over again multiple times because I enjoyed them so much.

With that said, I won't be giving future FF games a shot only because I've realized I enjoyed FF games created by Squaresoft. Square-Enix has yet to put one out that I've enjoyed and I don't see that changing in the future.

If FFXII had any flaws it was the randomly generated treasure chest content, and absolutely stupid meathods of getting good equipment and cash. I couldn't even play the damn thing past mid way because I got sick of dragging myself through monster infested ruins whie picking up nothing but potions and not having a dime to my name.

Same problem FF7, 8 and 10 had. Not of fan of that myself, either.

Well, doing side missions has always been the way to extend the playtime in a FF game. They just had those guild quests instead of card games

The way the item drop/chains worked, I have no idea how you could be broke. Monsters dropped a ridiculous amount of loot.

I actually didn't mind that. It made it so you can create the characters the way YOU wanted them. Imagine if Vaan was the only one that could do the abilities you enjoy playing/using, but you hated Vaan himself. That would suck to be forced to play a character you hate. Once I got the chance, I kicked Vaan to the curb and never looked back.

The only problem I had with FF12 was the fact that the license board was so small that even your 3 man party was overlapping with each other. If that's the route they want to take they need more options.

Yeah the Licence Board did need some major work. It was small, but it also had an awkward arrangement when it came to weapons. To get to katanas, you had to go through guns and polearms or grenades. Katanas should've been closer to swords which were strangely on the opposite side of the Licence Board.

I finaly got around to playing 12 about 2 months ago, loaded a save i had when i originaly started the game about 3 hours in.
Yeah, i didn't realize the license board was that big, and put most of my points in accesories or some garbage.

That was really a horrible system, just give me one screen where i can see everything please.

I'm a huge FF fan, and am excited for 13.

12....was fucking HORRID. Without a doubt the worst FF game, by far. The gap is huge.

My main reason for loving the FF games is the rich story, great characters, believable world.

12 had NONE of the above, a wafer thin story, the worst lead in FF history, boring bland brown world.

It had NO real event beyond the end, compare it to say the escape from Shinra in FF7, with Cloud on the bike, or Aries geting killed. FF8 had the gardens fighting[my all time fave FF moment] and the attemted murder of Edea. 9 had Alexander & Bahumt fighting, so badass. 10 also had some great set pieces, not as strong as the previous 3 tough.

12...had what? what do i remember about that game? the BLAND long boring dungeons.

I could go on all day really, but i hated EVERYTHING about it, Balthier was ok and kinda hot.

Also, don't get me started on the crappy summons.

In fact, i feel like going back and playing the old ones again, i'll start with 7.

Well, the main thing I like about FF12 is that it's the only FF game that was actually any sort of challenge. Status effects, buffs/debuffs and resistances had a heavy impact on the outcome of the fight and just blindy pressing the "attack" option would end in an embarrassing defeat. Not so much for some random slime or skeleton, but the boss fights could get pretty intense for a RPG

I hope that carries over to FF13

My main reason for loving the FF games is the rich story, great characters, believable world.

Believable world...what?

Underdeveloped characters was probably FF12's biggest flaw. Didn't seem like you learned too much about your party for the most part. I'm still not sure what Penelo was supposed to be doing. But, like FFTactics, the overall story and writing was still better than other FF games.

Hmm...yeah, I'm trying to remember the emotional climax in FF12, but it's not coming to me. I really missed the "classic" Final Fantasy/RPG type storytelling where every character has their chapter in the story. FF12's storyline didn't really do that. Penelo was one of the main characters and did absolutely nothing in the game from a storyline standpoint. A wartime storyline should have been sweeping and epic and I felt a little empty from that standpoint.

I didn't hate the combat system as much as I thought I would. And as someone else said, some parts of the game are legitimately difficult.

12....was fucking HORRID. Without a doubt the worst FF game, by far. The gap is huge.

I'm still a hater of 8...nothing can come close to that absolute drek--at least for me.

Is FF versus XIII going to have the same combatsystem as FF XIII?

I'm not sure which one yet, but I'm getting at least one of these 2.

When is this coming out?

Well don't expect this thing to be out until next year. They delayed the PS3 version so that they could work on a 360 port for simultaneous release. Sucks for PS3 owners in US, I guess. For Japanese PS3 owners, they get it before the 360 as a timed exclusive

I saw the recent footage for the other title (FFXIII Versus) and the graphics look so cool.

I'm very excited for the release of the main game and the Versus one too. Will buy it day one... on PS3 of course.

I think you're right. Still a PS3 exclusive.

http://kotaku.com/5025156/no-changes-on-final-fantasy-versus-xiii-being-ps3-exclusive

The article was written in 2008 though. So who can say what the future holds, especially since PS3 is still hurting for sales. I heard Sony only sold 200k units of PS3 last month, whereas 360 sold 300k. Without a strong installed base, Square Enix might flip flop on their decision and bring to 360.

Vice versa, I read that a lot of games that were supposed to be 360 exclusives were later released on the PS3 with added content when they failed to sell a high volume on the 360. Sucks for 360 owners but hurray PS3 owners getting the definitive edition.
