CHALLENGE 4: 攻擊星座
This is Project CBRunway. You're either in or you're out. Who will be CBR’s next big comic character designer?
Good morning, designers. Welcome back to the runway.
In Chinese astrology the zodiac of twelve animal signs represents twelve different types of personality. The zodiac traditionally begins with the sign of the Rat, and there are many stories about the Origins of the Chinese Zodiac which explain why this is so. In Chinese astrology the animal signs assigned by year represent what others perceive you as being or how you present yourself.
For your next challenge you must design a superhero or supervillain costume based on a sign of the Chinese zodiac.
HOWEVER, a sign may only be chosen once. Each sign has been randomly assigned a number between (1) and (12). Designers will choose their sign by posting their pick of a number between (1) and (12), upon which the sign they've picked will be posted and added to the list below. Numbers may be picked only once, on a first come, first served basis.
You will be judged on originality and creativity, and how well your costume represents the sign you choose without being too literal. Your outfit may consist of natural or synthetic materials.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. As you are designing a costume you should not provide any type of character biography or origin.
Submission Requirements
Artwork may be done in any medium but must be in color.
Artwork may be no larger than 550-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your PM, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. Some rounds may have additional written requirements.
Write-ups are to be no longer than a single PM, which is limited to 5,000 characters, including your image address and all formatting and image tags. You have only five days, through Midnight PDT of Monday, March 30, to Private Message (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=342) (PM) me your entries for this week’s Challenge. Be sure to select “Request a read receipt for this message” in the Additional Options section before sending. Failure to complete a challenge will result in immediate elimination from Project CBRunway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.
Post any questions, comments, or concerns about this challenge in this thread. The voting thread will be posted this coming Tuesday.
Designers, make it work!
And non-contestants, as we don't want your work to inspire our contestants, please Play Along at Home (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=8525039) by either choosing a sign of the Western zodiac (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zodiac#Western_zodiac) or waiting to post your Chinese zodiac signs until after the contestant submission period has ended!

Matt
Since this challenge requires that we design a costume only with no biography or origin in the write up do the same rules followed in the audition challenge apply? By that I mean no facial features, skin color, hair/facial hair, etc.? The costume should basically be on a blank mannequin?

Feel free to include all that stuff, but I would strongly suggest not letting them be a focal point of your presentation. I think voters will be able to distinguish between the costumes versus the characters.

Are we designing a character, or a costume?
A character can have, for instance, a snake's tail, fiery breath, horns, or an adorable little nose and big watery eyes. You can have funky energy signatures and even weirder physical attributes representing the animal.
A costume incorporates the elements into its design... so if I wear Aljira's outfit, I'll look identical to when Aljira is wearing it... of course, being a Dog, I'm far more attractive wearing the costume.

That's because we share the same wavelength, Michael. For the past four days or so, I've been thinking about making a villain for Wonder Beaver. I was going to wait until I'd actually sketched it, but I might as well pitch it now without the sketch. Ready? The nemesis for Wonder Beaver would have to be an evil rooster. I was toying with the name Dr. Cock. He could have menacing talons and have two goons that he always refers to as his "boys."

That's the sucky thing about getting a selection that can be judged later as being "too literal". The people will either like it or hate it for that very reason...
My solution... just go for whatever feels right!

yeah, the cock-references make the rooster and enviable choice of assignment. Aljira, End of Time, MtheMordant, and myself are going to have to work extra hard to do something unique since we have animals that are pretty commonly used.
I'm really looking forward to Affinity's, Escapegoat's, and Kid Icarus's this round, since they have the more oddball animals.

There...it's edited up...I'll allow people to read the origin bit after this round is over (if requested)

Just an fyi for everyone who didn't get the requirements, for voting I'll only be posting the parts of the write-up that describe the costume. Anything describing any "character" (bio, history, powers, names, etc.), which isn't what was asked for, will be excluded.
And...only about 90 minutes to PM your designs. Danny Wall, if you have a Play At Home entry for this round on the off chance a participant fails to submit an entry, you can post it in that thread anytime after 3AM EDT (but before voting begins, around 10AM EDT).

I am only realizing it now, but I guess I described my character, but ONLY as far as to explain why he made the choices he made in constructing his costume and then how the costume related to the traits of the zodiac. The confusing thing is that there were a listing of character traits given to us. It was quite difficult to not consider to some degree the character in conjunction with the costume. I didn't include an origin though...all that rambling and I guess I have no idea if I did my write up wrong!!! oh the stress
