The military doesn't want any gays in the military, but rapists are welcome:

Well, if women quit trying to join the military, there wouldn't be a problem, RITE? (Yeah, I've actually heard that one.)

Iv'e heard that arguement before.

Yeah the fault always lies with the victim.

Not a million miles away from 'Hey I y'know what would solve the AIDS crisis? If those dang Africans stopped having sex!'

So have I. I heard it from someone whose rationale went something like this:

"Well, of COURSE if you put women around a bunch of men who aren't getting any, the men are going to want to have sex with them. And if the women say no, of course the men are just going to take it. Duh. They're men."

Actually, no. They're monsters.

I understand the outrage and share it. But it's a mistake to think that this is limited to the military. Yes things need to change, now, but on a national if not global level.

"While the report shows modest improvement, we're far from Mission Accomplished," the California Democrat said in a statement. "Military women are more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire in Iraq."

Isn't THAT a dandy statistic?

For years, people who argued against women in the military said "But they'll get raped by the enemy!"

Interesting who the "enemy" has turned out to be, isn't it?

Meg told me about a friend of her fiance's not long ago. The woman called them in tears in the middle of the night---she'd been raped. Meg in turn called me the next day, fuming over it. I urged her to tell the woman to report and charge---but found out later that the woman feared reprisals, so she didn't do it.

Made me want to pull my hair out.

True though I think the military is actually the job where this is most likely to happen, in the US at least.
