View Full Version : Cultural sterotypes, subversive influences, sexually ambiguous analogies: The X-men

Well what can be said about the X-men is in the thread title.
The X-men. A group representative of outsiders. Those outside the mainstream society of the time.
However as times changed the outsiders have become less 'outside' and more mainstream. In reality the rights of women, ethnic groups, and homosexuals have become regonised as good things that were long overdue.
The X-men stood as an analogy for these downtrodden groups of society. The team itself reflected this with American Indians on the team, women on the team, black women on the team, homosexuals on the team.... The representation has evolved as we as a society has evolved.
So whats next. If these marginalised groups have been accepted to an extent (whatever that may be) what is the next boundary that the X-men should cross. Which other group should be represented.
Mentally ill - Well we have Polaris
Disabled - We had Taki... god only knows where he is now

How about Blindfold, who represents the blind community? Are all blind people like her?
Miss Sinister represents the transgendered. Miss Sinister, Ultron - do Marvel wish to push the idea that the transgendered community want to destroy society?

You should read John Byrne's Alpha Flight run. He had a really good variety of character types in it. I think it pretty much covered everything.

How would blind people react to know that one of Marvels premier Psi's was blind until it was no longer necessary for her story and she had bionic eyes fitted.
A solution unavailble in the real world.
Would the resident homosexuals appreciate seeing Northstar 'Straightened out' by means of a 'de-gaying' gun ?

And don't forget that the X-Men have two mutants who are capable of 'curing' blindness. Sage and Elixir. In the Bible, Jesus could also cure those who could not see. What does the Christian community make of Elixir and Sage?

All joking aside, much of X-23's behavior resulting from her Weapon X conditioning is similar to that of an autistic child. Limited speech, lack of social intuition, self-harm, etc.

Sinister and Cyclops relationship can be seen as the one of a child molester and his victim, doesn't it? Sinister ran the orphanage Scott lived (was an authority figure then), and did weird experimentations with him which Scott didn't even remembered until much later (though it was Sinister himself who erased the memories, can be seen as a victim blocking the traumatic events), and then he kept genetic samples (keeping a "prize"), and when Scott ran away from the orphanage when he was already in his mid teens, Sinister didn't took him back (since he was now too old to be "interesting").

The same goes for Xavier and Cyclops.
I want to see the X-Men tackle immigrants and xenophobia. They've always handled prejudices based on how someone was born, but they haven't really touched on prejudices based on where someone came from or their culture. And the X-Men are jam-packed with immigrants.

I dropped Uncanny during (yes, during) the issue where Cannonball explains voting rights and racial politics to two of his close friends, both nonwhite mutant women, one indigenous to North America, the other a first generation immigrant, both political activists since childhood, both at times government (and/or extragovernmental) agents, and their response was to sit there quietly. Also, Dani was wearing some sort of choker and feather deal again. Xi'an may have been defined by her sexuality explicitly ("Likes girls," as the whole of a sentence and character profile) around the same time.

There's a dearth of male Asian X-Men, actually; Sunfire was from Japan and Thunderbird (Neal Sharra) was from India, but neither stayed with the team for very long ... was there anyone else?

I know I'll regret asking this but are you serious? Because I've never read a story with any of them involved in a relationship with an underage character. Wolfsbane made out with one of the Xavier students so I guess she could technically be one, but apart from her none of them have ever seemed to be of the "Gary Glitter" persuasion to me.

Which student was that? And, is he indeed under 18yrs old? Marvel time is funny that way. In my 35 years of reading X-Men have never noted that any one of them were pedophiles -- not even Peter. I have always found such accusations to be nothing more than fan-fic wants and desires.
