Any thoughts on how the film would have been different if Sean had been in it? He refused to do it because he was retired (and also due to bad experiences on his past few movies), but how would it have worked out?

It's been speculated-but not exactly proven yet-that the role of Oxley was originally written for Henry Jones Sr. and was hastily rewritten into a new character. Perhaps Indy would go to Peru looking for his lost father? Then again, the character of Mutt had a sort of uncle-esque relationship with Oxley, how would that work with Sean being the grandfather?

And a thought about how they could continue/save the film series without the baggage from Crystal Skull-pull a "Temple of Doom" and give us a film that takes place before Crystal Skull but after Last Crusade. Might be difficult with Harrison continuing to age but might be worth a shot. It seems that the upcoming Indy novel (Which features Mac) and games are taking this approach, revealing some of what Indy was up to during the second world war.

From what I understand, the only real role that was in mind for Sean Connery was a cameo at the wedding. The only difference would have been a lack of references to his death.

IIRC, the original script had Sallah, Henry Jones Sr., and grown-up Short Round all showing up for the wedding. But for whatever reasons, the actors involved didn't want to do it.

Movie still would been awfull even if he was in it.

Wouldnt have detracted from the fact that the acting was bad, the plot was horrible, it had way to many computer effects, action packed and yet still somehow very sterile and boring action sequences and after all that it had a annoyingly played and plotted son of indy named "mutt" of all things was swinging through a cg jungle on a cg vine with cg apes.

Least connery had the good sense to stay away from that turd of a movie.
