I always loved Gil Kane's work. He did a ton in the '70s.

Certainly some of the painters working today are awesome, but I'm in an old school frame of mind.

I would say Byrne.

So many Iclasic and even iconic covers from X-Men and FF,

John Romita Sr. did some fine covers.

I would say Byrne.

Byrne can do some good covers, but I think most of these aren't really great examples, save for Uncanny 135.

I think the best cover Byrne has ever done is Alpha Flight #3 (http://www.artofjohnbyrne.com/cover-af/images/af3.jpg), which you left off.

As for my picks, I think Mike Zeck was always great at creating eye catching covers.

Kirby's was, as always, amazing. I think I like some of his monster covers more than his classic superhero stuff.

Currently Marvel as a slew of great digital painters turning out nice covers. Marko Djurdjevic (pretty much everything), Nic Klein (New Warriors), and Francesco "Matt" Mattina (Thunderbolts). Adi Granov walks between digital and traditional artist, but is impressive all the same.

Dell'Otto and Esad Ribic don't as many covers as I would like, but they're always a treat.

Jack Kirby. Every cover I see of his, I want to know what's going on in that book.

You'll get no argument from me.

On the one hand I'd say Kirby for all those FF and Thor covers in the 60s. So many of them and such a high standard set and maintained so consistently.

But on the other hand, I'm tempted to go with Steranko, because, while he did much fewer covers, almost every single one of them were outstanding, while Kirby had a few of middling quality, especially in the 70s.

In the last two years, I give it completly to Marko Djurdjevic, but older... nothing comes close to Kirby and Buscema... then Jim Lee on Uncanny/and X-Men... Amazing.

In the last two years, I give it completly to Marko Djurdjevic....Yeah I was just about to say the same thing.

Yeah I was just about to say the same thing.

It's true. His interiors struggle, but nobody beats his covers. and as soon as you see it, you know he was the one who did it.

As far as the modern guys go, Djurdjevic is certainly up there along with...

Alex Garner did a little homage to John Buscema too with this 100% pure awesome Savage She-Hulk cover.

Always loved Michael Turner.

The last covers he did before he passed on were remarkable.

Isn't he predominately known from his work on the Witchblade series?

In comic book art, the correct answer is always Jack Kirby.

Buscema or Romita Sr.

I'm torn. I'm (or have been) usually happy with any cover by:

Jack Kirby
John Buscema
Jim Lee
Alex Ross
Marko Djurdjevic
Gabrielle Dell'Otto

But only as long as they usually show some indication of what happens in the issue. I'm not a fan of the constant posterisation of covers (so that might knock Ross off the list).

Big John Buscema is my favorite Marvel artist of all time, whether we're talking covers or interiors.

Gil Kane for me. Great sense of design and a lot a drama on every cover.

Gil Kane!

As a kid, I didn't realize that most every 70s Marvel cover I loved was produced by Gil. His dramatic sense of design was beyond compare.

There are lots of good ones -- and having said that, my favorites are:

John Romita, Sr.

&

John Buscema

Jim Lee drew my all-time favorite cover, but as a whole, I'd have to give it to Jack Kirby.

I left off the cover of Alpha Flight 3 because that one does seem to get a lot of attention, and rightly so, because it is awesome. even though I think some of the other examples are better.

I adore Sienkiewicz's painted covers from the 80s: his New Mutants and Dazzler pieces were amazing.

It's hard for me to go past Jack Kirby and John Buscema. Both artists could easily draw me into any book with their amazing covers. Overall, I'd have to give Big John the edge over the King.
