View Full Version : Hockey "comic" idea..

Tonight I was looking at all kinds of hockey photos since I read a tutorial that encouraged drawing athletes in action for good anatomy/action practice, and hockey happens to be my favorite sport. And I got an idea I think is pretty cool. I don't know how much it'd appeal to a "typical" comic book fan, but in a way athletes are real life "superheroes" right? Especially hockey players. In a hockey game ya got all kinds of crazy crap happening: fights, crazy fans, players talkin' trash, funny signs in the crowd, hell, throats could even get slit.. Enough of my rant, though... here is my basic overall plan. Opinions are required, :)

Hockey Idea

Time period: one game including both intermissions. Estimated time period two and a half hours.
Focus on face-offs, fights, breakaways, saves, penalties, crowd signs, player/coach/fan reactions, popular players.
Recognize chants, bg music, players talking trash to eachother, the play caller/analyst.
Specify time remaining in period/s for drama.
The game being played is game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
Maybe have the players talk like Hulk or various other popular comic book figures, but especially Hulk, lol.

I dunno, I think it's a pretty cool idea. Plus there is most likely a reference picture for every situation imaginable one click away, lol.

As an illustration idea, I think there are tons of opportunities for cool actiony imagery. This would probably appeal to too small a niche (Hockey fans who read comics) to be commercially successful. As a story idea, it may fall a little flat because the narrative just isn't really there. Did you ever read Kickers, Inc? It was an old Marvel New Age title that was about a superpowered football team. It was terrible, but I confess it was a guilty pleasure of mine back in the day. Your idea isn't terrible, but I think the writer/composer of shots would definitely have a trouble holding the reader's attention.

Yea, after I posted this idea last night I was thinking it'd have to be around 10 pages or maybe even less like 5-7 in order to hold the readers attention and not get repetitive. How many times does someone wanna see a face-off, right? In order to be entertaining it'd have to be really short and focus art-wise on fights and goals, but the thing is there usually is a lack of both in the playoffs. Hmm. I'm still gonna try it out just for practice, though. See how it goes.

I concede that Bret. I mourn the day my home state lost its NHL team. Me and the two other guys who actually went to a game occasionally.

That was just my opinion, which I wouldn't invest too much in. I would love to see the script or finished product for the idea when it is further along.

You could get lots of drama out of the practices and flashbacks to the pre-playoff games. You could even have the team short of their best shooter because he got in a bench-clearing brawl in the last game of the regular season.
Even when there isn't much fighting, there are bone-jarring checks.
Exploding glass makes for a dynamic visual.
Make sure to use some really dramatic camera angles - worm's-eye-view with a wide-angle lens, for example.
Give a listen to a Warren Zevon song called "Hit Somebody".
Much as I hate the Red Wings, that octopus tradition makes for a great story.

Wow, great ideas. All of 'em. After feeling a little bit down on the idea earlier, you've given me some new inspiration. Thanks.
