As they say:
With another Edge anniversary comes another deliberation over the best games of all time.* But we didn’t want to think about the indisputable classics all over again.* This time we wanted to make it personal by asking the question,* if you had every game ever made at your fingertips,* which would we play right now*? What are the games,* shorn of nostalgia and presumption,* that we would actually want to spend time playing*?
Its a really good list.

Yeah, there are some great titles in the list, but it's really hard for me to swallow Halo 3 being in a top 10 of anything.
I also think the "shorn of nostalgia" phrase is hilarious, given that Ocarina of Time predictably tops the list.

Ocnaria of time is number 1? How the hell does that happen? granted it was a big deal when it hit the 64 but aside from a couple characters names and the title it had very little to do with zelda or even feel like zelda. It wasnt a bad game but shit fire man it belongs in the 60s, not number 1. The original one or atleast link to the past are more deserving.
Predictible list though full of all the common games you would expect and is nintendo heavy in the top 10 with a couple standard games thrown in to make the legions of its fans happy like half life 2 and halo 3.
But I will, ever in my life believe that super mario galaxy, halo 3, virtua fighter 5 and 3 grand theft auto games are ranked better than like diablo series, quake 2, warcraft 2/3, monkey island, or any of the other thousand games more deserving.
Just a list of popular names thrown in with a dash of obscure shit as filler.

Just for the record:
Saturday night, while many of us were stuffing food into our faces, plenty of folks were still playing Halo 3. At precisely 6:36pm PST, in a three minute and nineteen second game of Infection on Foundry, four players participated in Halo 3's one billionth match.

So is this a most popular games list or a best games list? Or are they suggesting that popularity and best correlate?

There may be some grounds for correlation there, actually. Not so much "popularity" in terms of sales, but popularity in terms of people still playing the game post-release. Of course it's a specific definition of "good" or "best" but if a game is still being played by millions long after it debuted, I don't think there can be any doubt that it is successful at the primary aim of video games: to entertain.

Well, Tetris should be at the top of the list then. I can't think of another game that has entertained such a wide audience.

Its definitely a little bit of both. They are games that they admit are continuously fun to play. I would imagine a game like Halo 3, that hasn't even been released for two years, still managed to have 1 billion multi-player matches, did so because its just plain fun.

Yeah, I understand that and everything, but two years isn't a lot of time, either.
I'm much more impressed by a game like Super Tecmo Bowl and how long it's been regarded as the most fun football game of all time. To me, that would deserve a top 10 spot on this list more than Halo 3, if I understand the criteria correctly.

Maybe you should read their rationale:
With another Edge anniversary comes another deliberation over the best games of all time.* But we didn’t want to think about the indisputable classics all over again.* This time we wanted to make it personal by asking the question,* if you had every game ever made at your fingertips,* which would we play right now*? What are the games,* shorn of nostalgia and presumption,* that we would actually want to spend time playing*?
It means that you’ll find many games that did so much to inspire and direct videogame culture and design missing.* Our selection process quickly made clear the effect of the insatiable march of progress,* new titles building upon the successes of older ones to better effect.* That’s why you’ll find few* 8bit games in the list.* Elite,* which this year celebrates its* 25th birthday,* isn’t present,* for example,* but Eve Online is.* Which is not to say that all old games are out of the picture.* Certain games are remarkably resilient to time,* with the Zelda series in particular proving its exceptionally consistent quality.
And, frankly, there are a number of iterations of Tetris that are also on the list:
Panel De Pon
Puzzle Quest:* Challenge Of The Warlords*
Puyo Puyo Fever
Puzzle Bobble

Yeah, but none of those games really have the appeal of Tetris (Puzzle Bobble is fairly popular but still doesn't come anywhere close).
Remarkably resilient is how I would describe Tetris, and I'm sure millions and millions would agree.

And its #7 on the list, why is that a problem for you?

I'm just saying that their placement is a little confusing. Halo 3 close to Tetris just looks funny.

I can understand a lot of games on the list, but Halo3 being in the top ten while Half Life 1, one of the most inovative and revolutionary FPS's of all time, not making the list is dumb(Yeah Half Life 2 is there, and it should be, however the Zelda's and GTA's prove that one game in the series being there doesn't exclude other games in the series).
