It's an old, off-topic question, but I'd really like to know. Thanks everyone!

I often wondered the same thing. I was young when this came out so I didn't read any other comics to know where many other characters were at the time. I mean besides the JLA at that time (blue beetle, guy garder, bloodwynd, fire, ice, booster gold, maxima) where the hell was everyone else? I'd imagine even though there was a great distance between some of the other characters some other supes could have arrived.

I know there are good reasons for everyone not showing, but I wasn't reading too much DC at the time.

During the Winter of 1992, when the Superman death story was going, the current Wonder Woman storyline had her on another planet at the time, freeing their population from slavery.

They were fighting in metropolis - superman's city , i think most heroes would assume that superman would come out on top as he always does whenever a menace threatens metropolis.
You don't see a lot of superheroes joining in everytime a menace pops up in metropolis , they have their own city to protect and assume that superman would take care of it. He is SUPERMAN after all.

Love to have a picture of her face when she got back and asked, "So, anything happen while I was away?"

Where Wonder Woman was, and where Batman and others were for that matter, was covered in JLA 0. Wonder Woman shows up in a computer room where Batman is sitting watching the Doomsday footage and she is saying she doesn't believe it, and won't believe it, unless Bruce confirms it. I believe there is even a throw away line to both of them thinking he would be fine.

I heard she hung back thinking that with Superman dead her sales would improve.

Wonder Woman looks realistically proportioned there. I like it.
Also for that matter where were the Green Lanterns and other high level characters when Superman was fighting Doomsday? Powergirl and Supergirl could have helped.

Guy was one of the first into the fight with Doomsday. Hal & Power Girl were out of the country with JLE at the time. Luthor Jr. (really just plain ol' Luthor) held Supergirl back to protect Metropolis incase Supes didn't stop the rampage. When she did go in, Doomsday quickly bashed her into her protoplasmic form.

They hung back because they believed that after Doomsday took out the American League, that Superman could beat him because he was unbeatable. In Justice League America #70, Aquaman or Batman said it wouldn't have mattered if they were there. They would be like the others. We see confirmation of this in "The Doomsday Wars", Doomsday Annual #1 and the reaction to seeing Doomsday in "Villains United" special #1.

If for example Captain Marvel showed up, and Doomsday kicked BOTH of their asses, with Superman dying to finally halt the beast, I think that the story would have had even more punch.
Picture Doomsday standing up to both Supes and Cap, with the heroes just hanging on, dispite the advantage. Doomsday throws a bus into orbit. Cap, beaten, bloody, and weakened by the fight (as is Superman) knows that he has to leave Superman along against Doomsay for a few minutes to save the bus full of people. Before Cap even catches up to the bus, Superman makes his decision. Seeing how much damage and how many injuries are being caused, Superman puts everything into one punch to kill Doomsday, leaving himself open for his own killing blow. Cap manages to push even his unmatched endurance to the test as he catches the bus and puts it down safely somewhere in Greenland before passing out from the strain, not even knowing that Superman died even before the bus touched ground.
