Ok guys so I love Duncans art on Hellboy, he is really great, but I have noticed something about the way he draws hellboys right hand of doom and I was wondering if others have been noticing it too.
So I went and looked over all the Duncan hellboy issues and found the places where he draws the hand in the new way.

Here is my list of Duncans Right hand of doom drawings that i am referring to:

On the second to last art page of Darkness Calls number 4, hellboy is handed a tissue and a comb by the little girl, you can see how the thumb looks like it kind of swivels on the big circular knuckle joint … and how all the fingers look very flat

Darkness calls #5 art page 5 you can see kind of a scoop like shape that the fingers and palm make, almost like they could shovel things

Darkness calls #6 art page 2 you can see more of the scoop effect, and on page 11 you can see the thumb swivel effect again.

Wild Hunt #2 page 3, more scoop shape, and on page 5 we can finally see the right hand of doom being drawn really big

Wild Hunt #3 page 5 this is the big one … the right hand of doom is now humongous! In the lower two panels you can see hellboy resting his left hand on top of his right hand … and his left hand is just totally dwarfed in size by the right hand! Also in the top panel his hand looks very big and that picture gets repeated later on in the comic and then again on the first pages of issue #4

Issue #4 page 10 its really big again and also on the third to last page where he is holding alice his right hand is almost the size of her entire body

Over all I love Duncans art and I don’t mind a big right hand of doom … though I would prefer a smaller one personally … I think he is doing an excellent job and I look forward to his issues when they come out. I was just wondering if other people have been noticing hellboys hand like I have.

So the question you are asking is: Does size really matter?

Dear Jeremy,

now that you say it I must admit that I noticed it, too, but I didn't think much of it. mattmanw54301 must be right; does size really matter? At least not in the case of hands,

greetings--

hey Curt thanks for those pics, it definitely helps ,

We still need the first frame from Wild hunt #4 where hellboy is wielding the shard like a baseball bat, but you can see pretty clearly how Duncan draws the Right Hand of Doom a bit differently than others, especially the pictures with his left hand resting on top of his right hand

I haven't got a chance to scan it yet, but I'll post it as soon as I do. :)

I don't mind the bigness of the rhod so much, but the floppy flatness of the fingers does irk me a wee. Almost like it's made from metal instead of stone.
Despite me being very taken with Duncan's art, other than that.

I guess I never noticed. It always seemed enormous to me, no matter who was drawing it.

Actually if you start with Seed of Destruction and work your way forward you can see the Right Hand of Doom getting bigger with every issue. I know some people on this thread are likely to try and read something into that (like the hand is growing) but I just think its a matter of Mignola changeing the way he draws Hellboy as the series progressed.

I don't know if anyone here reads manga but a similar thing can be seen happening in the Fullmetal Alchemist manga series. In the beginning the character of Al (who is a living suit of armour) is very pointy all over but as the series progressed the artist started drawing him with more smooth rounded edges.

Yeah, I've been noticing the hand getting larger, and I'm all for it. I think Duncan's drawing it perfectly. Much bigger and it would border on silly, but as it stands, it's sort of how I've always imagined it.
It's particularly noticeable when compared to how it looked back during SoD. I always thought it looked kinda funny when it was too small.

Art is fluid and more important to sequential art is energy, composition and camera angle...I wouldn't get too hungup on the details...it distracts from what Duncan delivers...
