"Get On Your Boots?" WTF?

It's actually a pretty good song. It feels like a pretty decent blend of new and old. It reminds me a little of Elvis Costello. I haven't heard the rest of the CD yet, but if the single is any indication (and that's not always the case, as Vertigo was also a pretty decent pop song), I might have my faith in U2 restored. I mean, both Eno and Lillywhite had a hand in it, so I have some hope.

It's a pretty good CD. Get On Your Boots is one of the weaker tracks.

I downloaded the top three tracks off iTunes this morning and Boots was crap, Magnificent was not great, and the only one I liked, the title track, sounded like U2 trying to be Arcade Fire.
The music sounds fine, I'm finding the lyrics to be... insignificant. And I fear that I'm now the equivalent of someone buying Stones albums into the 90s.
(I should mention I own every song U2 had ever recorded. Even some they didn't.)

It's fucking terrible. I hated "Vertigo" too, but could at least understand how people could like that song. The new one is just bland as hell.
I think I might like the first two songs on the album, but can't remember anything about them at the moment. That people have the gall to compare this to Achtung Baby kills me.

Really? Because I really flipped when I heard that track. I know with every CD, someone comes along and says hopefully "but it's like their old stuff, so it must be good!", but I really got the feel that it had some of what made their early stuff so catchy and hopeful. At the same time it was still up-to-date, if that makes any sense. I was lukewarm about All You Can't Leave Behind, and "Vertigo" was the only track on the last CD I cared for. It was actually the only U2 CD I didn't care to own, and it made me sad. I hope this one picks it up again.

I think I just became the kind of bitchy fan I hated so much when Pop was released. Err, sorry.

right.......now i've listened I can at least give an informative opinion.
As a U2 fan, I have to say......that's a very dismal offering. oh my. It's probably the worst track i've every heard them release. It had.......nothing.

Give it a listen before you buy it. That's the good thing about living in the future.
I don't have speakers on my work computer yet, but I think you can listen to it on the U2 homepage.

It's probably the album i'd play the least but it still wasn't as bad as this. (i've only heard this one track so far..the put on your boots one.)
Having said all that there were some tracks from Zooropa I REALLY liked a lot and still play a lot too. Lemon I love, and Stay.....now Stay is really good. And have you ever heard the disco version of Numb? Now that was good.

No, I haven't heard that one, but then again, U2 is not my thing after Joshue Tree.

I think Zooropa and Pop are both underrated, but I'm not above saying it might just be nostalgia talking. Zooropa came out when I was in high school, and I have very fond memories of playing that cassette (yes cassette!) into the ground.
I think Pop was a giant experiment, and I can't really fault them for that any more than some of their Passengers stuff. Some of it is actually quite good, although some of it is crap. (I still can't listen to that Playboy mansion song without wanting to smack someone, it's so bad.) I will say that their music has lost much of its bite, though. Again, I'll reserve judgement until I hear the latest.

From Wikipedia:
Lanois was later quoted by Le Journal de Montreal on 26 June 2008 as saying that the new album will push the limits of the sound arena much like Achtung Baby did in 1991, stating, "I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records from U2."
And from the Rolling Stone review:
...their best, in its textural exploration and tenacious melodic grip, since 1991's Achtung Baby.
I guess neither quote exactly says the new one sounds like Achtung Baby. But even trying to connect the two in terms of importance seems a little ridiculous.

I'll get this latest U2 at some point ....and I enjoyed "Get On Your Boots". I'm glad they tried some changes . I'd hate to see U2 make the same album every time.

U2 has always been really awful and bland. They're like the Eagles without any of the punch.
And brother, the Eagles didn't have that much fucking punch to begin with.
I thought "War" was an alright album, to be fair.

I enjoy the song as soon as I heard it from the music alone. I actually couldn't determine what Bono was saying at first.

U2 have been adopted by Conservative Christians for a few years.
Is Bono anti-abortion? Is he anti-gay marriage? Someone said he was. I can't find where he is or isn't.

Good thing Zooropa had at least four, then.
Stay, Numb, The First Time, and The Wanderer.

Kind of doubt he is. They probably just like the religiously themed lyrics.

Numb is a little goofy.

They were being a little goofy at the time. Personally, I also liked Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car and Lemon. So the album was a win for me.
I lurved U2 in the 90s.

At least two of those (I'd argue three) are so good, that, yes, they make the entire album worth it. Hell, one is so perfect it makes the album worth it.
And the remainder isn't shit. Just not great.
I was not disappointed by the $12 I spent on Zooropa back in the day.
<-- Will defend early 90s U2 to his dying breath.
