CHALLENGE 1: DICK
This is Project CBRunway. You're either in or you're out. Who will be CBR’s next big comic character designer?
Good morning, designers. Welcome back to the runway.
From Dick Tracy to Dakota North, P.I.s have long been a comic book staple.
For your first challenge you must create and design an original and memorable non-powered, human, plain-clothes detective or private investigator.
Your outfit may consist of natural or synthetic materials and the style certainly does not have to be noir.
In addition to the written description required as outlined in the submission requirements, you may include a one-pragraph biography for your character.
Submission Requirements
Artwork may be done in any medium but must be in color.
Artwork may be no larger than 550-pixels wide and 800-pixels long.
Entries must be inserted into your PM, using such services as Photobucket.com or imageShack.com. If you are unable to use such a service you may e-mail (mattbib@comcast.net) your entry and we will host the image for you for the duration of the competition.
All submissions should include a written description of the costume, explaining, to the best of your ability, material, functionality, design inspiration, etc. Some rounds may have additional written requirements.
Write-ups are to be no longer than a single PM, which is limited to 5,000 characters, including your image address and all formatting and image tags. You have only five days, through Midnight PDT of Monday, March 9, to Private Message (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=342) (PM) me your entries for that week’s Challenge. Be sure to select “Request a read receipt for this message” in the Additional Options section before sending. Failure to complete a challenge will result in immediate elimination from Project CBRunway. There will be no extensions or exceptions.
Post any questions, comments, or concerns about this challenge in this thread. The voting thread will be posted this coming Tuesday.
Designers, make it work!
And non-contestants, be sure to Play Along at Home (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=8525039)!

I've got my concept figured out, but it's 2 characters. What's the ruling on that? Am I allowed to create 2 characters?

The challenge requirements seem pretty singular to me.

Hmmmm.....I'm working with 2 monitors at work here...so if open up another IE page on the second screen, bring up this webpage again....then I can make it look double to me and go with the flow.......YES!!!! Street smarts wins again!!!
j/k ....I've got another great idea for a single character too, so I'll just go with that...

LOL. This is an excellent strategy.
I am excited! I can't wait to get near a Mac to try some stuff out. I think I've learned my lesson from previous seasons on how to not drop out of the competition prematurely.

Matt,
Are we limited to only one drawing of our design in the final submission? Like, if the design has multiple layers (ex. a raincoat over top of a suit), can we submit a view both with and without the coat as long as it fits in the submission guidelines for image size?

I'm sure it's allowed.

As usual, I have a few different ideas rolling through my brain.
In case anyone's interested, I do my sketches, and the one that "speaks" to me most becomes the final design submission. I tend to gain great affection for my characters, and even if they don't get many votes, I know that they were the right creation in my mind, and I stand behind them.
Last year, also had great affection for the other designers' characters too, and created the Project CBRunway Fan Art thread. I'm quite sure I'll be adding drawings to that thread again this season.

This is absolutely my favorite genre to create in... I am really excited! I have a million possibilities to consider before I will be ready. (I just watched the Watchmen and have Rorshach fresh on my mind. Hurm. )

That's an interesting technique, Dean. I do my sketch early ( I know it wouldn't seem like it) and I chip away at it little by little. Adding here, changing a small design element there. The design to me is like a living thing, it evolves over the 5 days. The reason I don't really press to finish it until the last day is, because I'm never really satisfied with it until the last minute.

On my way to a screening of Watchmen last night, I saw Christian, the winner of Project Runway Season 4. I hope that's a good omen for me!

After much blind stumbling around, I think I finally have my concept! Now... the execution! Wish me luck! I must be excited, because every sentence I am saying is an exclamation! And like Spaghetti, I can't wait to see everyone's designs as well!

Oh, man. I think I went for "risky" right off the bat. I hope I didn't end up shooting myself in the foot. At the very least, I had a blast making it.
Incidentally, maybe because I'm actually on the other side of the international dateline, the whole "midnight" thing is confusing to me. I understand 12:00 am (or more precisely 00:00) to be the very beginning of the day, and not the last possible moment of the day. In other words, in Japan we use a 24 hour clock, so noon is 12:00, midnight that day is 24:00, unless it's the beginning of the next day, in which case you use 00:00. (This is why a local pub has opening hours posted from 19:00 to 25:00.)
I hope I'm correct in reading the intent of the contest as being the last possible moment of Monday, at 24:00.

I stayed in relatively safe territory for mine. Since I think I am overly familiar with the genre, there are lots of references to other detectives with my creation- but it is 100% original. It was hard to stop at just one drawing. I did three, but settled on the straightforward approach.

I have no idea if I shot myself in the foot, I might have, but it depends on the other entries.
I don't think I went for something risky, but looking back it might be considered risky. I did the research, and I've been a huge fan of detectives since forever, but designing one that's original is a lot harder than I imagined.
Also, looking back, I might have misinterpreted the challenge, seeing a lot more restrictions than there actually were.
