Here's a summary of the issue:

The issue starts off with Hex tied to a chair. Sawbones is in front of him, dissecting a woman (who I assume is Tallulah) and ranting about morality, God, and souls. Hex wakes up screaming, he was having a nightmare and he's actually in Tallulah's hotel room. She tells him that he's been out for a couple of weeks. He tries to leaves but Tallulah stops him; she kisses him and they end up having sex.

Next scene is Tallulah at a bar, asking questions. She's approached by several men who want to know where Hex is, and gunfight breaks out. She kills several of them, but Sawbones shows up and kills her. Hex wakes up screaming from another nightmare again. I find the dreams interesting since they suggest that Hex actually cares deeply about Tallulah. He tries to leave again, this time Tallulah doesn't stop him, so he's off after Sawbones.

Hex end up back at Sawbones's place, who's dissecting a slave girl in front of around half a dozen men. Hex screws up and gets captured again, but Tallulah shows up to save him. She ends up killing all of the other guys aside from Sawbones. The issue ends with Hex repeatedly setting Sawbones on fire, then dousing him. Hex starts getting out some knives, implying that he's going to torture the doctor to death.

I'm decidedly a veteran comics reader--over 35 years now--which I'm mentioning just because, even so, this issue took me by surprise not once, but twice!

and that's a pretty cool story that can do that, for me. Still not adjusted to the newest "Jonah look" but can overcome that-- after 40 issues, this series is really moving along.

I don't recommend this issue for those just starting the series, as it opens very much as a follow-up to the previous issue, and as such, would probably leave a new reader wondering why any of all this was happening. But as someone with a long Jonah Hex history, I found it exceedingly well written, and well illustrated, and welcome.

It was nice to see our boy Hex get some.

Sorry to leave such a crass statement.

Except it was all in a dream he was having.

Another great issue and a great ending to the story started last issue. This title is spot on consistent month after month without any of the hype and respect that lesser titles receive.

Nice spoilers Henker, but does Hex kill Sawbones in the end? It looks to me like he sets him on fire and extinguishes him over and over. Then the last panel is Hex holding a knife and saying "I'm gonna try out some new things tonight". So it seems to me that he kills him after the issue ends.

Overall, Jonah Hex is continuing to impress. It is indeed a rare day when I am startled or surprised by a comic I'm reading, but man oh man... Only a team like Palmiotti and Gray could actually use a dream sequence fake-out effectively in the comics format, so kudos to those gentlemen.

I get the feeling that Jonah tortured Sawbones to death.

Now that I look back at the issue I think you're right.

Except it was all in a dream he was having.

Actually, no, he really did sleep with Tallulah. It was his visions of her dying that were dreams. Still, it actually says something about Jonah that he cares enough about Tallulah to fear that "Sawbones" would kill her.

I LOVE Tallulah. Sure, she's a female version of Jonah himself but I like that she's a bit more talkative and has a bigger vocabulary than Jonah and in some ways she's actually a bit smarter and savvier than Jonah. She knew he would need help and she knew arguing with him would do no good so she just up and did what she felt she needed to do.

You're right. I was going from memory when I said that. After a second reading, I was a little off on what was dream and what was real.

After i finally got my copy of this issue i was real glad Talluah was back this issue. I never liked her before but this artist made her look badass, real cool and her loyalty to sometone like Hex is admiring.

I also smiled that finally Hex got some without having to pay for it.

Other than that and seeing Sawbones die horribly i really liked the dialouge more than usual. It was great, funny, sarcastic, hardcore. Specially many of Talluah lines.

Next month the great Jordi Bernet is back :D
