The closest one I can think of is Tenchu, but I'd like to see a ninja equivalent of Bushido Blade.

They could, but then nobody would care.

Probablly not.

Because the mystical stuff is #1 What alot of people expect from ninja related games and #2 Unless they had a really great writer and director for the game it would be really boring and really short without the mystical stuff thrown in as filler.

Making a realistic ninja game would be boring and appeal to very very few people. For it to even be interesting the total game length time would have to be around 6 hours, any longer and it would be just shit thrown in to make it longer.

Look at metal gear solid, he is kind of like a ninja but what if you played those games with all the fictional stuff taken out, be pretty boring wouldnt it?

No, because ninjas are notorious litterers, and mystic trash is inevitable.

You mean Ninja Gaiden isn't based on historical events?!

uh, last I checked it was called Tenchu, and it sold fairly well... Seriously, THERE AREN'T ANY REAL NINJAS ANYWAY. You're talking about something that was SUPPOSED to be wrapped up in myth and legend, about people who seemingly appeared out of no where and disappeared without a trace. People whos appearance scarred powerful individuals ****less, and turned their hair wait. Individuals who supposedly moved with lightning speed and precision. Will you ever see a Shadow Warrior game without any mystical elements? Go play Metal Gear or one of those first person shooters were your supposed to be some kind of assassin, hell play any other game these guys and get your joyless on.. Play GTA and try to not get spotted and call yourself a ninja.

Even in its most satirical showings, one point about Ninjas is that they are supposedly capable of doing things normal people could never do, its what made them so interesting in the first place. Removing such a element so that you can see a guy in black pajamas stick people with swords or blow darts is kind of silly if not dumb at this point.

What about this game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja_Blade

Looks like an interesting ninja games set in a modern or ever futuristic setting.

But the mystical and supernatural are what gives the ninja theme its compelling power.

Why do people seem to be under the impression that the Ninja Gaiden games are set in the past? I don't recall feudal Japan having a particular glut of helicopters and machine guns.

That's just because ninjas can time travel

Irony you have to explain is failed irony, I suppose. I was obviously making a joke about a 'realistic' ninja game.

I think they can make a Splinter Cell-esque game, but instead of guns and grenades, just make them with swords and darts and smoke bombs, etc.

Actually, there is an answer, sort of...

Tenchu Z. It's pretty much Tenchu with a lot of the mystical "trash" toned down...

It's decent, but definitely not the best of the series.

I think the Metal Gear games come close so long unless you want the setting to take place in fuedal Japan.

Metal Gear is full of mystic and sci fi garbage. You're also not a ninja.

I like the Tenchu games, and never noticed a glut of mystic crap. Mostly I just squat on a rooftop or behind a wall, waiting for a guard to walk past so I can remove his spine. REpeat until you kill everyone on earth.

I'm sure there's some magical dohickies laying around, but it doesn't effect gameplay at all.

You can make the carts jump. At least, you could in the original.

No. The last boss of the original game was the king of Hell.

Considering that and the demons and undead you fight in the Tenchu games, I'm wondering why people are bringing that game up as a response to the OP

Tenchu Z doesn't have most of the mystical elements from the Tenchu series (except Rikimaru is still there). That's the closet one to the OPs question.

roomofeasement

Uh, the closet thing would be samurai games - namely Way of the Samurai for the PS2. Open-ended, hilarious and fun. It's basically like the second Onimusha sans the soul-gauntlet and demons -- basically the recipe you're looking for. Watch out for the black kung-fu man in that game though, he's an excellent alliance.

Because it doesn't really effect the 'hang from a ledge waiting for a guard to stop at the bowl of poison rice so I can rip his lungs our' gameplay. Your not exactly juggling a dozen horsemen in the air with a giant sword in Tenchu.

The Ninja Genre definitely needs some re-inventing. And I have to say is the Wizard (you call it Mystic, I call it wizard) aspect of Ninja games turns me off to. I want Ninjas Vs Ninjas. Ninjas Vs Samurai's. Ninja's Vs Republicans. Ninjas Vs the Homeless.

I've played that game also...

And it's not like Bushido Blade (the clashing aspect completely ruined that fighting system, as did the fact that it has a health bar... Among other things).

I also don't recommend it.

Probably for the same reason we can't have a game about knights without dragons and magic thrown into the mix, cause people expect it. Just like they expect mystical stuff when it comes to ninjas its part of the legends and the myths.

You mean Ninja Gaiden isn't based on historical events?!

It's not? You mean its not an astion game base of ancient japanese history?!

But what about the giant mutated crabs that I can flip for maximum damage??!!!!

I think beating the crap out of Batman, Spider-Man and Godzilla back in the Revenge of Shinobi were probably the finest moments in ninja-based videogame playing.

Elemental ninjutsu moves are mystic. So that takes Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden out of the list.

Hell, that takes Tenchu out too (even the most realistic game in that series, Tenchu Z, which I've brought up enough times in this thread, has a some unrealistic items and techniques).

And he rode on a giant shuriken. (which was awesome)
