Hey, everyone! There's a new TCG that just came out that features characters from a wide variety of movies. It already has some pretty awesome characters like Rambo, Terminator, Ash Williams, Hannibal, Jason, Robocop, and a bunch more with even more to come down the road. They even have Chuck Norris from his role in Delta Force. Awesome? I think so.

This is not anything like MtG. If you've had bad experiences with TCGs before, please don't let those experiences bias you against checking this one out. If you are still a huge fan of TCGs, this one is definitely worth your time. For me, the character selection alone is reason enough to get into the game, but let me outline a few of the other things this game has going for it.

First of all, you've never played a game like this where the players themselves have sooo much control over the direction of the game. Decipher, the company creating the game, is developing an amazing website for the game that keeps the players involved in the game's development. They allow players to vote on things like tournament structure, game mechanics, and characters to be included in future sets. Seriously, any movie or TV character you can think of is fair game; just suggest it in the forums and you may even get a direct response from the president of the company herself. I think just about every player who has visited the site has spoken directly to the president, CEO, or game designers about various aspects of the game. They care a great deal about what the players think and are devoted to making the players happy.

Secondly, it's much cheaper than other TCGs. There is no such thing as starter sets or booster packs in this game. Instead, you purchase "kilos" which contain 120 cards for only $30. Cards are only divided into 3 rarities: common, uncommon, and rare. Each kilo comes with 2 copies of every common in the set, 1 copy of every uncommon, and 10 random rares out of a total of 30. That's right, the only randomness in Fight Klub is the rare cards. Also, you can only have 3 copies of each common or uncommon in your deck and only 1 copy of each rare; so it is possible to get a complete set of cards with only 3 kilos. That's a full TCG set for less than $100. Try accomplishing that in a game like MtG...

Thirdly, cards are purchased directly from Decipher themselves, and they deliver them right to your door. Everything centers around the website that they've got set up. Why is this a good thing? Well, cards never really go out of print. If Decipher runs out of cards in a particular set, you just click a button to request the next print run; and when they get enough requests, they'll print them again and send them to you. This ensures that new players never miss out on old characters and cards.

Did I mention the game is invitation only? They're trying a totally new viral marketing strategy. You can only create an account on their site if you've been invited by an existing player. You even earn 10% of the purchases made by players who use your name to login to the site.

If you're interested in the game at all, please check out www.Decipher.com (http://www.decipher.com). They have a lot more information on their site than what I could tell you here. If you'd like to create an account, just tell the folks at the door that "TurtleFreak" sent you. I've been following the development of the game for almost a year now, and I can answer just about any questions you may have.

This post turned out to be way longer than I expected. Let me know what you guys think, and what sort of characters you'd like to see in the game. I can suggest them for you, or you can create an account and suggest them yourselves on the game's forum.

Haha, my bad.

TCG = Trading Card Game

Also sometimes called CCG for Collectible Card Game or Customizable Card Game.

Aye, Yu-gi-oh, Magic: The Gathering, and Chaotic are all trading card games. Decipher, the company making Fight Klub, has made trading card games for Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and .hack before. They're very good at getting movie and TV licenses and handling them very faithfully which is why Fight Klub is so cool. There really is no limit to the characters they could get in this game.

Just remember, when you visit the site, tell the dude at the door that "TurtleFreak" sent you.

You mean a CCG as in Customizable Card Game

Yeah, TCG or CCG. They're pretty similar, but I guess Customizable Card Game is more fitting since the kilos are a lot less random than your typical booster packs.

CCG seems to be the common term for this kind of game.

Decipher has a terrible reputation in CCG circles. If you bought an entire box of booster packs for Star Wars, you might get one major character like Han Solo. Maybe. And their Star Trek CCG was poorly designed and badly unbalanced. Now they bring us Fight Klub, the CCG version of Amway. No thanks.

It's not like that anymore, Shellhead. Fight Klub rarity is totally different than most CCGs. I really think you should take a look at it before you write it off.

I've never played a Decipher game before, but this one seems pretty fun so far... and rarity is, as has been said, quite different. You can only have 1 copy of any given rare in your deck, so a single copy is a playset.

As to balance... well, thus far, it's balanced. There 12 characters available right now...

Rambo
Chev Chelios (Crank)
Ash (Army of Darkness)
Jason (Friday the 13th)
Hannibal Lector (Silence of the Lambs)
Jigsaw (Saw)
Tank Girl
Chuck Norris (Delta Force)
Sil (Species)
Spaulding (Devil's Rejects)
Mr. Blonde (Reservoir Dogs)
Michael Emerson (Lost Boys)

... and the only one that is even a little bit unbalanced is Tank Girl, and only because she's the first really strong rush the game has seen.

That said, I have no idea about Decipher's past reputation. If I listened to such things, I never would've played VS, and I still hold that, as mishandled as it was at times, VS is the best CCG ever created... and it was made by UDE, for whom I had no respect.

Anyway, maybe Decipher will live up to their reputations. Hopefully not!

And just to spite the Shelf up there, I'll throw my name out there, too - if you want to get in at decipher.com, you can say seventhsoldier sent you. Take that, you cad!

I'm just happy to see another player here on the CBR forums. So what characters do you use, Calvin? I mostly play as Ash, Rambo, and Mr. Norris. Ash is probably the easiest of the three to use, but I can't really pick a favorite among them.

I've been debating ordering some of the cards for a few weeks now. (As I already have an account over there and such.) You guys think the game plays fun and quick? Easy to pick up and learn? I LOVE the idea of the huge cross section of licensed properties.

I think it's a lot of fun. I've got about three other people that I play with pretty regularly, but I plan to get a few more of my friends into it. When I first started, the games lasted about 45 minutes because we were all learning the rules and getting familiar with the cards, but now most games are over in 20-30 minutes unless it's a particularly heated fight (perfect for playing during a lunch break at work). And everyone I've taught the game to understood it pretty well after just 2 or 3 games. The rules are fairly simple, but there are a lot of little details to pay attention to that can quickly turn things around.

I've played TCGs/CCGs like Yu-gi-oh, Magic, Lord of the Rings, Redemption, Digimon, and TMNT; and Fight Klub easily ranks among my favorite. Lord of the Rings is probably still my all-time favorite, but I just couldn't spend the money necessary to make a really competitive deck (not that I played in tourneys, but I enjoy highly competitive play, nonetheless).

EDIT: By the way, Superfro, you said you already have an account, what's your screenname on Fight Klub? Maybe I'll see you around in there!

Also, if anyone's interested, I've got a blog for Fight Klub. I don't update it too regularly, but I've got quite a bit to look at right now. Mostly it's just a bunch of TMNT dream cards for the game. I've got one for the TMNT as a group, Shredder himself, and even Casey Jones. These are not real cards, but merely a tool in my crusade to try to get them in officially. Check it out! (http://fightklubblog-turtlefreak.tumblr.com/)

My honest opinion?

Fight Klub has an enormous amount of potential, but there are a few missteps in the opening that worry me a little.

Not a lot, though. Those missteps are found primarily in a few of the Effect cards, and those cards are the ones that Decipher seems to have the least solid grasp on, but they're working on it. The dev team - and the president of Decipher - are pretty active on the forums, and if you have any questions, they've thus far proven to be remarkably open and forthcoming with their information. Unlike UDE. I will hate UDE for what they did to VS.

Anyway... my take is, it's a fun, quick game that nonetheless manages to cram a lot of strategy into a simple system while leaving things open for development without too much power creep. I think that One and Two represent a flawed success, but a success nonetheless... and I think that the core game is more than fun enough to warrant sticking with it through a few more sets.

And it's certainly cheaper than any other CCG I've played.

As to what characters I use... well, I won't get Two until next week, but I really, really want to play Tank Girl. Right now, I think my favorite characters are probably Ash and Rambo. I did NOT think I'd like Rambo, but his Score ability makes him a hilariously effective stall character, and I enjoy messing around with stall decks every now and again.

I was most disappointed, I think, in Jigsaw, who I thought would be an extraordinarily tricky character to play - you know, laying traps, making his opponent destroy himself. Admittedly, I only have a single kilo of cards right now, so it's not like I can build the best version of any deck, and his Enhance ability gives me a great deal of hope for some tricksiness, especially in conjunction with something like I Want to Play A Game.

One has some bland cards, but the more I look through the set, the more I notice cards that I'd initially overlooked as worthless and now really, really wish I had a playset of. Like Child's End. That card is rock solid. And Rotting Memories? You have to build around it to get it online and keep it safe 'til you use it, but that's the single most powerful combat ability in the game right now. Similarly, Ash has a brutal support suite - his Setup ability is really good and his support cards - This is My Boomstick and Ash's Chainsaw - are both pretty awesome.
