Sorry if this is a repeat thread. I seem to remember someone asking about this very thing, but I can't find the thread so maybe I'm thinking of something else. Anyway, I just ordered the two Hellboy animated movies and noticed three Hellboy animated trade paperbacks on Amazon as well. Are those any good? I'm only lukewarm on Wierd Tales so if they're like that, I think I'll pass, but if they are like the animated movies at all they might be interesting. Any thoughts?

I've enjoyed them all. I also enjoyed the movies, I think there worth getting and no there not at all like Weird Tales.

First I got me the movies as soon as they launched, which had me more than gratified. They're quality animation and well capable of upholding Hellboy and BPRD's coolness.
They are much like the comics, yet more elegantly lightweight and straightforward. Which isn't anything bad, since they do not disappoint either graphically or narratoneously (?). They even convey lots of cool mood and well-wrought originality and humor, which big Red seems familiar with.
The completist in me also purchased all the Animated books upon publication, which feature cool Mignola pinups and carry basically lots of the Animated movies' quality.
So yeah, well worth it I'd say.

The only downside I could imagine would be that no new movie installment has been launched yet. In my view mr. Tad Stones should be given the 'go ahead' multo pronto.
Also, a Goon toon in Stones' Animated Hellboy's vain would be much appreciated, as would LoJo movies, Amazing Screw-On movies, Rusty Razorclam movies, Baltimore movies, 'How the Fae Went Underground'-movies, you know ...

If you weren't too hot on weird tales I'd say keep away.

I'd say they're better than Weird Tales. They're accurate in tone, in terms of how close they stick to the animated movies.

Totally agree with Maurice...
Better than Weird Tales... And the movies are pretty cool as well.

I personally didn't really like them. As a completist, I had to purchase them, if for nothing other than the great pin ups by Mike.

On a different note, a Baltimore movie would be simply amazing.

I'll third that! DEFINITELY better than Weird Tales. You really have to base it on how much you liked the movies rather than how much you liked WT, because the Animated digests are more like those. In my opinion, the "Menagerie" one was the best.

Well, I think I'll give them a try as everyone mostly seems to like them. I'm in the same boat as Jr. Wormwood anyway as I'm a bit of a completist who would be annoyed that I have everything but those. I also really like the animated movies so I'll check them out.

both animated movies were good (also the amazing screw on head was good)

but the animated comics are not worth it .... they have a couple of ok moments ... like a couple of Mignola pin ups .. and maybe some enjoyable young hellboy stuff

the art and stories are not very good .. Mike Mignola was not very involved in it ... and they do not fit with the animated movies ... there is no real connection between them

the whole continuity of the hellboy animated comics universe is off .. acctually it isnt off it just doesnt exist ... theres no connection between one story and another.... however the movies are a different story they seem to have a continuity planed out but theres only 2 films so there wasnt much time to flesh it all out and explain the differences

i hope they make another animated film!

See the animated films first, then if you feel the need buy the books.Personally [for the Hellboy animated tales] I would have prefered a comic along the lines of the "Batman Adventures" style.......Speaking of the movies, I really miss the fact that there are no more animated films. I sat down and watched them again this week [They just got better and better],and I truly believe that the "Phantom Claw" would have blown our socks off...With no Hellboy on our screens for at least a few [6 possibly 7] years,..it's a sad loss...Thanks again Tad Stones, Mike Mignola and all the crew who did such great work.....
