I feel sorry for that, Ken O. (Wouldn't say it if it weren't so)
You see, it has been brought to my attention Mike Mignola is to visit my country publicly come late winter.
And I'm not sure how I'd feel if I'd suddenly couldn't attend the event. Or scratch that: I know how I'd feel for sure.
But yeah, next time it'll be then I'm certain.
I couldn't believe it when I saw an ad for all the talent going this year!!!
I mean, I knew it was always a crazy, sexy cosplay con, but the sheer amount of talent! DragonCon is really blowing up! I guess, with the cost of things these days, and it being closer to the east coast (where many of the talent is) it only makes sense.

Mike was at a really small show in Atlanta back in 2002 I think. It was in the Gwinnett County area. I was in line for Sam Kieth for 4 hours, so by the time I got to Mike, he wasn't doing sketches any more. I think he was mostly there to promote the Steven Jackson Games Hellboy game. It hadn't come out yet. If I knew how long the line would have been for Sam Kieth, I would have spent the day hanging with Mike.
It was great speaking with Sam Kieth though. He's a very nice guy. He was doing these crazy elaborate sketches for everyone. It was shortly after he directed a movie for Roger Corman, so it was pretty easy to get him started rambling.

Well a few years ago I was speaking on a Star Wars panel and as soon as I left the room they put up the sign in the earlier picture.
I've been involved with a few of the panels on Sunday night/Monday morning where we just hook up the mics in an empty room and spout nonsense and vulgarity. Been thrown out of those. haha.

Those are great! I wandered into one where the panel's topic was no topic at all, and if anyone got on a particular subject, they were forced to talk about something else. I'm making it sound much less fun than it was... it was Mad Tea Party weird.

Is there going to be a Dragon*Con Hellboard meetup? I'm not sure exactly which days I'm going to be there yet.
I know y'all kinda keep to yourselves here at the Hellboy board :)
but the YABS board & Community board has a CBR lunch every year at Dragon*con, and y'all are welcome to join in.
we typically meet in the Hyatt bar at Noon-ish, and then all walk to a close by restaurant (used to be City Cafe in the Day's Inn, but we've also gone to the pub up the street, and the cafe in the attached mall).
it's a cool couple of hours to hang out w/ CBR folks.
not sure about the thread on the Comm board, but here's a link to the one on YABS:
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=278308
for the most part, we're all long-time Dragon*con attendees (so we've likely seen each other around), but there's a few new folks coming this year too.

I'm open to a meetup at the Con. Depends on what panels are happening during your CBR luncheon though, but once the final schedule comes out we can post our availability.

Hi, I looked at the schedule and can see the panels Mike is participating in.
I have not been able to find if he is or is not selling art. I see Dark Horse has a booth but nothing about its schedule at dragon Con or on Dark Horse site.
Can anyone will more knowledge or experience help as I am trying to plan my trip to Atlanta but cannot stay long. Thx

Mike will not be selling art. He will have a booth in artist alley where he will be signing and will be doing a signing at Dark Horse 2:30 to 4 on Saturday...he will not be doing sketches...

Day 1 is done for me. Need some sleep and then it's back to the grind again.
Got to see Mike Mignola (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_0439.jpg) though. He and David Peterson (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_0437.jpg) are sitting back to back.
Also got to sit in on a few panels. Terry Gilliam (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_0418.jpg)'s being the highlight. I did get to sit in on a panel about Mythology with Mignola, Chris Golden, and a few other authors. Also, took photos of various folks in costumes. Best of show being this one (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_0507.jpg)based on the CG film 9.

More Mignola (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1540.jpg) yesterday. Went to a panel titled Fun with Demonology. It had various authors again, each very fun to hear from. I think I'll be picking up this lady's (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1532.jpg) books, they just sound hilarious. Demon hunting soccer moms. Can't beat that. Before the panel started, Mike seemed to be enjoying a talk with this woman (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1541.jpg). Are her books any good? I think he said his family are fans.

Yesterday was my final day (con is still going on today, but I chose rest over more aching muscles).
I got to sit in on more panels like this (1 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1886.jpg),2 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1893.jpg),3 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1881.jpg), 4 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1896.jpg)) and a short story reading with author Mike Resnick (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1858.jpg) and just generally ran around trying to find folks that I know from the boards to say hi.
One of our CBR members (Fransesco Frankavilla (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1823.jpg)) actually recognized and stopped me. We ended up spending a few hours talking.
I also got another wonderful pic from this boarder (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1828.jpg). Petersen actually posed for me on that shot.
I also picked up a commission from William Stout. An interesting story there btw as he actually went and sold the piece I'd already paid him to do the day before. I had to sit there and make sure he did this one (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1843.jpg) for me. He was apologetic about it, but I can't help wondering...
It seems I didn't mention a few costume contests that I sat in on yesterday.
Here's some stuff from the Anime/Cosplay contest (1 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1423.jpg), 2 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1428.jpg), 3 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1436.jpg), 4 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1448.jpg), 5 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1454.jpg), 6 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1463.jpg), 7 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1492.jpg), 8 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1481.jpg))
Here's stuff from the infamous Dawn costume contest. C3PO hosted the event and had a litany of very crude jokes and quips. (1 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1555.jpg), 2 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1589.jpg), 3 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1612.jpg), 4 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1666.jpg), 5 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1684.jpg), 6 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1788.jpg), 7 (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/DSC_1796.jpg))
Ok, I think that about covers this con. Hope you enjoyed this trip with me.
I think next year I'll rent a fisheye lens so that I can show you the crowds. You can't get a true sense of Dragon Con without a view of the crowds. I may even be able to get shots of some of the more disturbing things that I saw.

I hope you ate/drank/slept well?
And on William Stout (judging from the picture): he probably means well . Your actual presence won't have left him impressionless and his piece for you looks made to make up for any unhappiness I'd say .

They do actually, it's called Centennial. I wasn't able to get in twice. On Friday it was for Shatner/Nimoy and yesterday I missed Adam Savage' Mythbusters panel. I still don't quite get why Savage is this popular.
Many folks (me included) weren't able to get into see the Venture Bros panel, but that's because they were booked for a smaller room. I'm sure in future they'll be booked for Centennial, as well.

I had water with me practically at all times, but I ate and slept very little. DragonCon trumps Comicon when it comes to partying. Has to be seen to be believed.
And on William Stout (judging from the picture): he probably means well . Your actual presence won't have left him impressionless and his piece for you looks made to make up for any unhappiness I'd say .
I've met him many times and he's never (that I can tell) remembered me. The piece is for Capps so, I won't get to hold onto it. I'm normally really good about reading people, but he doesn't show much emotion so, I'm not completely sure if he's a good or bad guy.
I did enjoy hearing him chat with an old friend of his. They shared some personal stories with each other about other famous folks like Frank Frazetta, Al Williamson, and others whose names I've since forgotten. This wasn't just any stories either. It was some pretty emotional stuff. I don't know that I could even mention any of it on a public forum. Hopefully I'll have forgotten most of the details by the time someone corners me about it.

They do actually, it's called Centennial.
Ace television series, if I reminisce correctly.
I wasn't able to get in twice. On Friday it was for Shatner/Nimoy and yesterday I missed Adam Savage' Mythbusters panel. I still don't quite get why Savage is this popular.
O come now, a pop action (science) show by likeable Hollywood dweebs remaining to their true selves: what's not to get?!

Damn nice piece from Stout. Is that Deja Thoris? And did you say he drew that while you were standing there? Wow.
Stout says that he worked for Disney parks as one of those guys that draws stuff live in front of large crowds. He's learned to draw quick and is affected little by all the noise going on around him.
Here's a bad series of shots showing the progression through the piece. The initial pencils are really hard to make out, but hopefully you get the idea.
Deja Thoris progression (http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/spydawebm/dragon%20con/WilliamSout_DejaThoris_progression.jpg)
I missed a step where he came back over everything with a blunt pencil to do some extra shading.

Hmmm. Then you'd do well to just keep eyeballing and snapshot him when it counts, I'd say.

Talking legends amongst themselves, huh. Sounds good albeit easily uneasy seeming maybe. But then, they were just talking - in your presence there. So you'll have witnessed an ordinary conversation of extraordinary comic people, which'll be kind of special anyway.
To my own astonishment I have on occasion also felt to be picking up on stuff I probably shouldn't: some comic artist decisive careersteps looming, all too frank collegue typecastments, even a shopowner potentially douchebaggin' Con-organisers out of their line-up completion and stuff. The douchebaggin' I acted on as soon as I saw fit, but all the other stuff I was capable to forget about rather instantaneously - again to my own astonishment .

Don't misunderstand, their conversation was kosher. Stout was chatting up his friend while he re-drew for me. His friend had a young artist with him that he wanted to introduce to Stout and one conversation led to another. Just the way things go. Two old guys talking about the old days.

I have very briefly chatted with Bill Stout a couple of times at SDCC. He is always pleasant but, like you said, not a real warm, chatty guy. He's been around so damn long that I've noticed those guys (Stout, Wrightson, Kaluta) all seem to have the same demeanor. Too many conventions, perhaps? Anyhow, the best reaction I got from him was when I had him sign my copy of "Dinosaurs." It was a first printing and he could tell I was a huge fan of the book as he said he didn't often see them (first printings) anymore and you've been through the book many times it appears. The book has had it share of referencing through the years. He then asked me about my favorite drawing and then did a really nice sketch inside. I love his sense of graphic style and own a few of his sketchbooks. I think Jake will be well pleased with the one he produced - plus he got to get a second rendition which gave Stout the chance to improve on the concept I'm sure.
Thanks for all of the updates and pictures, Spyda! It seems with every Con there is simply too much to see and do (with the exception of the Phoenix Con which is easily covered in a day!).

I love my copy of Dinosaurs. I have the slip cover edition. I remember meeting him the first time, and telling him that his art was one of the things that got me into comics & film. He said "Is that good or bad?". I would love to ask him about his times with Frazetta. I'm sure he has some great stories.
Kirk I didn't think about the "improve on the concept". I want to see the other one. The whole thing is strange to me. I wonder what that guy paid?

Cool. I often get the feeling 'time' or 'swiftness' being somewhat of a thing for artists. I've heard more than one say that attending cons or drawing in public's a good thing to be doing, not only for the fans or wallets, but also for them as artists. Like they'd enjoy forcing themselves into doing pieces in a certain time frame, on more or less promptly picked out characters or topics.
Maybe it's just me talking out of my pants 'though.
But I went to see some artists - some famous and some without crowds or waiting-lines - and a good few of them seemed almost craving to be drawing stuff for people. Maybe it's also a way for professional artists to freehand at times instead of their doing normal 'nine-to-five-routine'.

I like the way he draws ERB people. It really gives off an early Tarzan feel. It's not like I'm ever going to get a Frazetta. The next piece I would like is something from the book Jurassic Park. Crichton based the book loosely off his work, and he did some pre-production art for the movie.

I agree with Jake on Stout's Burrough's characters (hence my approval of the sketch with Dejah Thoris). I am hoping - though I doubt it is going to happen at this stage - that Stout gets to help with the design of Pixar's John Carter of Mars movie. He would offer incredible insight.

I totally agree. I have real doubts about that production. I'm not a fan of the casting at all. And I think I read somewhere that they are no going in the "Frazetta" direction. That just sounds crazy to me. The man difined the characters. Stout has spent a lot of time with Frank, and worked in that world. He seems a natural fit.
It would be nice to get Stout on board with GDT with Moutains of Madness, and throw in Weta for the creatures...as long as I'm wishing.

The casting worries me, as well. I'll give the actors a chance though. Hopefully they aren't as mediocre as their performances in Wolverine suggested.
I don't think that Frazetta is a must with the material, though. There are elements common to Frazetta's work that should exist, but directly aping Frazetta isn't a necessity in my view.

Also I'm just putting this out there. Dejah needs to be topless in just about every scene. I'm mean if they can get away with Dr. Manhattan then I want my Dejah. Then again Watchmen was rated R, and not made by Disney. They should have snagged Bale for Carter as well.

Topless ain't going to happen, but I hope they skirt that wardrobe line as far as they can go.

I saw some concept pictures which showed Carter and Dejah almost completely covered in armour, including helmets. And the armour was pretty generic and boring.
I don't know if those were for the current movie tho, or a previous attempt.
I think they could get away showing a fair amount of flesh if they wanted and were clever/artistic about it, but this being Disney i doubt they wil try.
Also i haven't seen the bloke in anything, but Collins doesn't strike me as hot enough to play Dejah... i mean she doesn't exactly stand out as being hotter than the average hottie.

If we went with cannon on the wardrobe, everyone was mostly naked - but I know Dejah is quite often simply portrayed as topless. With Disney/Pixar being involved and I know it won't get higher than a PG, they are going to be fairly well clothed. I hope there are some people at Pixar that love John Carter enough to at least try and stay close to the books.
I am oddly clueless about much of the casting and also not certain about how Pixar is going to work the designs. I read this is Pixar's first live action film but they obviously are going to use CG for the various sets and creatures. Or are they going full CG replacement of the actors to create a more seamless, more stylized look? While I think there are a lot of very gifted people at Pixar, I felt much more comfortable when Jon Favreau was on the slate to do this movie. But damned if that stupid Iron Man movie didn't draw him away. ;)
It is still a long way off (2012, right?) so I don't know what is going to happen but I will continue to hope for good things.
Sorry to hijack the thread from the Dragon Con theme - but I am enjoying the opinions and ideas expressed - and pimpernel's picture as well.

Favreau's Carter was dead before he joined Iron-Man. Pixar hasn't really let us down yet so, I've little reason to believe they'll screw up so badly on this outing.

Frazetta.
I find Frazetta's drawn stuff about the greatest comics material out there, together with Lou Fine's comic art that I know of.

Disney should be pulling off sort of sensual yet non-explicit nakedness. Or either not do the movie. (At McDonald's I once overheard a young boy at his b-day party go: Oh look it's Pocahontas - she's a hot babe!!) Genericness for stuff like armour and weaponry would be unacceptable:
what I love about many Frazetta illo's of Burroughs' works is me not knowing anything about the characters but still I'm able to tell they traveled far or have cool weapons and stuff from unknown civilisations.

I'm hoping they will at least go for PG-13. There needs to be a decent amount of violence and at least semi-nudity. I really can't see Dejah (warning: contains naughty bits) (http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=308017&GSub=29585) wearing a lot of clothes.

Excerpt taken directly from the MPAA's definition of the PG rating.
... There may be some profanity and some depictions of violence or brief nudity. But these elements are not deemed so intense as to require that parents be strongly cautioned beyond the suggestion of parental guidance. There is no drug use content in a PG-rated motion picture.
I think they can still get away with some violence and nudity provided it's filmed strategically. Suggesting violence or nudity rather than overtly flaunting it on screen should be safe enough to make the PG rating.
Heck, all they really need to do is have the actress be buck nekkid, but shot from behind with only the reaction of Carter to guide us and the audience will still be satisfied.

My point being: who is being potentially offensive really, for all them PG ratings:
Moviemakers? Parents? Sci-Fi writers? The MPAA?
John Carter didn't get to do drugs or ladies explicitly - until in a Disney flick?!
I have no trouble with PG ratings so long as they don't interfere with the actual creative content.
And such ratings should be worded differently, to address those addressed how they're meant unstupidly. Like:
"Yeah yeah yeah, we DID think of the children, in a harmless fashion, so hold your horses and don't be sitting on sticks..."

I too feel no reason to be doubting either Disney or Pixar on this. Although I guess for Dejah I'd like seeing a metal and flesh-colored bikini rather than headspinning *almost confrontational* camera-action all the time.
Like Homer & Bart would put it (while viewing the '80s movie 'Splash'):
