Super hot Comic Book artist Tommy Lee Edwards will be appearing at Ultimate Comics on February 21, 2009. He recently finished Marvel 1985 written by Mark Millar (Wanted, Civil War), but has worked on such comic staples as Starman, Green Lantern, Moon Knight, Hellboy, and more. He has also done design work on a multitude of Hollywood films like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Batman Begins, and Superman Returns. He is also a member of the illustration collective known as The Blvd, sporting such comics giants as Walter Simonson, Bernard Chang, John Paul Leon, and others.
Marvel 1985 was a unique project where the Marvel Supervillains came to an unexpecting real world setting. Think Secret Wars meets The Monster Squad and you would be close to the feel of the project. The book also has a strong link to the Durham and Chapel Hill based comic shops as Mr. Edwards used Jon Newman, manager of the Chapel Hill Location of Ultimate Comics, and the shop itself as reference for the shop in the book. In fact, “Seth”, the shop owner in the book is the spitting image of Jon, even down to that charming Simpsons Comic Guy demeanor.
The signing is a momentous occasion for the local chain as it is their first ever in-store comic creator signing. Many shops use signings as a way to attract customers to their locations, but Ultimate Comics has spent six years providing the best service and most complete selection of comics in the Triangle to build their little store in Homestead market to a three store chain.
The event will also mark a much belated grand opening for their newest location at 756 Ninth St. in Durham. The store opened last August, but the busy summer release schedule and bustling Holiday season hindered the shop from celebrating in a grandiose fashion.
The Ninth Street location will also have a gallery of original art work by Mr. Edwards, including original pages from 1985 on display. The event will begin at 11:00 at the newest location. Mr. Edwards will happily sign, meet with fans and the press until 1:00pm at that location and then will migrate to the Chapel Hill location at 2:00 pm. Jon Newman will also be on hand at that store to sign copies of 1985. The Chapel Hill location is located at 1322 N Fordham Blvd, Suite #9. The event will finish up around 4:00 pm.
The press should feel free to contact Alan Gill at alangill@ultimatecomicsonline.com to schedule on air or print interviews with Mr. Edwards or the staff of Ultimate Comics.
