Mention she is lesbian and the UK press get all excited.

I suspect a lot of the US & Canadian members on here will find some of this stuff pretty amusing.

BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7883348.stm).

The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/feb/11/lesbian-batwoman-dc-comics).

The Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/4587541/Lesbian-Batwoman-is-DC-Comics-first-gay-superhero.html).

Now the tabloids.

The Sun (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2229856.ece).

Daily Star (http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/69263/Holy-cow-Batwoman-is-a-lesbian-/). I love the spin in this one that because she is red haired and a lesbian she should immediately be played by Lindsay Lohan in any film!

it has not for the most part but it is harder to make stuff up over here.

It was in the papers about her creation months ago but nothing about who should play her.

Lol, just got home and saw this in the Irish Daily Star;
HOLY COW
BATWOMAN IS A LESBIAN!
A flame haired lesbian superhero is to replace the caped crusader. The foxy female crime fighter is replacing Batman after Bruce was apparentley killed off. And lady-loving redhead Lindsey Lohan (22) is already tipped to play Batwoman on the big screen.

It goes on to say about "Kathy Kanes" new role in 'Tec and a quote from Greg Rucka. So many things wrong with that report, not least the badly drawn picture they have of her.
How the hell did that Lidsey lohan rumer get started? Are all British and Irish tabloids stupid on some sort of hive mind level?

Quite an interesting game to count the number of errors made in the articles or times the CBR site gets quoted.

Some of the user comments under the articles are 'interesting' too!

Only Christina Hendricks of Mad Men could play her in a movie.

One of the articles quoted something about the Batman creators saying he was 'elsewhere' at the moment, what the heck is that supposed to mean!

From the Daily Star article:
Batman’s millionaire alter ego Bruce Wayne has apparently been killed after being ejected from a plane.

...great. As if RIP/FC wasn't complex enough, now the press is writing yet another version of his "final fate" :P

Yahoo News has a report about Batwoman being DC's first gay super-hero.

What a bunch of morons.

But this is so cool! She just debut 2 years ago and already Hollywood wants to make a movie about her! Amazing. Who cares about that deadbeat Wonderwoman.

How has the North American press covered this, well or just as badly?
There WAS a spate of "Batwoman The Lesbian" reporting years back, when she was first rolled out, but overall I doubt most N.A. outlets care about the "story" anymore. It was good for a single news cycle but I don't think was repeatable. And they rarely care about what goes on in comics anyway, unless its on the level of Cap dying or Spider-Man marrying or something like that.

That said, there ARE embarrassing exceptions to the rule. Witness, TV Guide:

Holy Lesbian, Batman! DC Comics Names Dark Knight's Successor

* Feb 11, 2009 05:25 PM ET
* by Adam Bryant

How do you heal a fanboy's broken heart? Lesbians. Or at least that what's DC Comics is hoping.

After recently killing off Batman, DC has announced that Batwoman, a red-headed, stiletto-wearing "lesbian socialite by night and a crime-fighter by later in the night," will be headlining Detective Comics. Batwoman — and her alter ego Kathy Kane — will be the subject of at least 12 issues beginning in June, marking the first major storyline for a gay character in DC's history.

The character was first introduced in 1956, but her modern "outed" incarnation is only a couple years old. Writer Greg Rucka insists her sexuality is incidental to the character. "Yes, she's a lesbian. She's also a redhead. It is an element of her character. It is not her character. If people are going to have problems with it, that's their issue," he told the U.K.'s Independent newspaper.

Rucka also noted that future editions of the comic may focus on Catwoman and Damien, Batman's purported son — that is, until they decide that it's just best to bring Batman back to life.

What do you say Batfans? Are you ready for a homosexual hero?

They're just riffing on the "work" already done by the U.K.'s Independent, but it STILL is embarassing even just being a rewrite of that.

As for Lohan, the North American press doesn't give a crap about her anymore either. She's considered boring now that she's mostly on the wagon and in a stable relationship (even if it is with a girl).

Or so we would like to think!:lol:

Maybe this story got this coverage over here because of the way comics are still viewed over here by many as kids things?

You know what they say, No Publicity is Bad Publicity - not that the Bat-Verse hasn't gained enough popularity after The Dark Knight.

This is pretty soddy journalism. I admire the attempts at humor, but they're not really accurate (excluding the tabloids). One of the linked articles doesn't even give a source of where Rucka's quotes are coming from.

I work on a college newspaper. It gets to me (not that I'm a professional by any stretch).

It would have been cool (based off the listed articles) that they actually approached Rucka or DC Comics with their own questions instead of borrowing from another source. That's when you know the mainstream media is taking a vested interest.

Well at least the broadsheets did mention this site in their quotes which is something I suppose.

Well, according to Rich Johnson, Paul Levitz hates bad press. That is allegedly why the Batwoman series was shelved.

A slightly more sober piece, but not from the UK press and yet again making the mistaken statement that Batman was ejected from an aircraft, where is this error coming from as it keeps being repeated?

Now for some satire.

Seeing that this version of Batwoman was partly created in order to add 'diversity' (http://forum.newsarama.com/showthread.php?t=72016) to the DCU. DC and Rucka should not be surprised by what the press choose to focus on.

I love how The Sun cut the one sentence from the Rucka quote that had it make sense. Brilliant!
