This is a great, great issue. Spoilers below.

The issue begins with members of the JSA helping Dick to clear out his former HQ in preparation for the return move back to Gotham. This clearly takes place in the aftermath of Final Crisis and Bruce's "death". Dick feels that Gotham now needs his attention 24/7 and that he owe's Gotham and Bruce's memory that much and more. He decides to take the train from NY to Gotham to be reminded of the people he's there to protect. After meeting Alfred at the train station, Dick spots a blown night light on the car trip home. This is clearly to show that while in Gotham, Dick is not going to miss a thing. Even the smallest detail will catch his eye. Later, in the Batcave, Tim, is helping Dick and Alfred find the gigantic penny, which was lost in one of the lower ravines of the cave. I think this happened in the "Heart of Hush" storyline a while back. Dick is about to give up and call Supes for help when Tim spots it! They lift it upright in an attempt to make the Batcave "home" again. Dick decides to go on patrol and Tim tells him to be sure to check the computer so that he knows about all the "hotspots" around town that will require his attention. Tim seems really happy and leaves. Dick mentions to Alfred that Tim seems to be in denial over what has happened. Alfred mentions that Tim has seen many crazy things already (Superman dying, Hal Jordan being possessed by Parallax, Green Arrow being killed, and the return of Barry Allen). Because each of these fallen heroes has come back, Alf thinks that Tim feels that Bruce will "walk through the front door everyday". Dick begins weeping as his heart tells him Bruce is not coming back from this. Tim over hears this while on the steps out the batcave, then quickly makes his get away. Dick goes upstairs and opens a box. It holds the candle that was lit the night he took the oath with Bruce. He reflects on how the Wayne family name means public service and that it is HIS responsibility to protect Gotham now. We next cut to Grayson fixing that broken street light from before. Turns out that Dick is in Crime Alley, in the same spot where Joe Chill "created" Batman by killing his parents. Dick realizes how alike he and Bruce really are. Both lost their parents at a young age. Dick symbolically lights the candle on the same spot where Bruce's parents fell. The light that burns does not just help Dick to see clearly... it provides light for wounded souls. Dick lay sad, just as Bruce did when his parents were taken from him. Someone helped Bruce. Then Bruce helped Dick. So Joe Chill's bullet in a way created both of them. Nightwing stares remembering how Bruce placed his hands on his shoulder and was there for him to help him through his pain. He ends by giving a heartfelt "Thank you, Bruce" and notes that Gotham City will always have hope. Gotham City will always have Nightwing.

It seems that this issue leads directly into BFTC, depending on what happens in Robin next week. By far the best issue of Nightwing I have ever read. There's also an "Origins and Omens" back up story where Dick tries to surprise Barbara for her birthday. She proves how much of a detective she is by telling Dick what he's doing and asking questions even though she's blindfolded. The one thing she didn't expect: Dick is taking her skydiving! Happy Birthday, Barbara! Scar goes over future images from Dick's life and states that he like everyone else is going to be torn by hope and fear, love and hate, and rage and solace. He, too will be consumed by the war of light. Some of the things shown as "Omens" include Dick, in a Nightwing outfit kissing Batgirl, Nightwing about to fight a Batman perched atop a streetlight, Nightwing beaten and bleeding with a gun pointed at his head, and held by someone wearing one of Batman's gloves, and an image of two people training. I can't tell if it's a young Bruce training a young Dick Grayson... or the current Dick Grayson training Damien. These seem to be heavy BFTC hints .

This was a perfect send off to an awesome character. I think the point is that Dick is more than ready to take the mantle. The point of BFTC will be does he really want it? Can anyone really replace Bruce as THE symbol of justice in Gotham? My take from reading this is that Nightwing wants to honor Bruce by being "Nightwing" and doing as well a job as "Batman" would have done. Bruce and Batman are both irreplaceable. But Nightwing is the next best thing. Plus Tim's reaction is kinda suspect... he does seem a bit overly happy right now given what just took place. Which is a great set up for Robin next week.

In the mean time, I kinda took from the "Origins and Omens" back up that Bruce's body might be reanimated as a Black Lantern. I don't know if that's a false interpretation or not given that O & O is in every book pretty much this week. What do you think?

Again, this is easily second best comic of the week, behind the Gaiman/Kupert Batman story.

Loved the issue. My only problem was with the Omens section, seemingly showing that Damian may become Robin. If this is the case, it's going to need a really strong writer to make me want to read about the new duo. Dick Grayson may be my favorite DC character, but I'm not sure if that can overpower my extreme hatred for the abortion that is Damian.

This would have been more impressive if an issue filled with talking was unusual, but that hasn't been the case under Tomasi. It's more the rule here. I used to complain there wasn't enough dialogue of characterization, but there something known as "too much of a good thing." Or is it "be careful what you wish for"?

He makes me laugh, but he's Bruce's son no matter what, so I understand if Dick feels the need to try and "save" him from Talia's influence. It's Jason Todd who drives me up a wall and I think that's obviously him in the Batman outfit with a gun fighting Dick---which shouldn't be a fight. It's be made clear that Jason was never Dick's equal, so all these fights that end in a draw are ridiculous to me. Dick should hand him his ass once and for all.

I agree.

I think Jason, being the least respectful of the three will be the first to actually don the cape and cowl. And I don't think Nightwing or Robin will be thrilled about it, even if they're having some of the same inner conflicts about the mantle of the Bat.

Alfred so far has been reaping the benefits of the best characterization since Batman's fall, I think. He's leading the Outsiders ... he's continuing to guide Dick and Tim ... he's the brains now!

I also agree that it seems like Batman's corpse might get the Black Lantern treatment, even though through a trans-dimensional god-curse fluke, Batman's not really dead. But hey, there's a body. And that husk, which Batman has shed thanks to Darkseid, is free to be a zombie terror with some residual memories!

This issue was a phenomenal send-off, and really fits the mood this month. It's a time for reflection before we jump crazy action into Battle for the Cowl. Full of nice moments (that hopefully don't become a recurring mopey thing for Nightwing). I think Alfred's mention of "soldiering on" is the best example of what needs to be done.

And yeah, this issue feels like a nice segue into what looks like the Battle for the Cowl themes.

As for the Origins & Omens bit ... Babs birthday was a nice touch. The coolest bits I thought were her in standard woman fashion saying "22" which should be two years younger than what she really is, roughly ... without getting too deep into chrono-fatigue.

It was a cool birthday present, Barbara's not being easy to lead astray was funny, and best of all was that freefall skydiving shot that showed the entire landscape around Gotham City from a mile up, the coast-line, the city limits, the countryside (and some terrain that presumably Wayne Manor rests on).

We've gotten Two-Face and Ra's kind of taking out Batman's legacy on Dick ... when's he going to get christened into the realm of a mind-game obsession with Joker?

At the NYCC- Battle for the Cowl panel, Daniels mentioned that in issue 2 of BFTC, two characters in "Batman" uniforms would be fighting each other. So I think you're right... I think one of those will be Jason.

I also really liked this issue. I'm excited to see what happens to Dick, knowing that Nightwing is not coming back after BFTC.

Amazing issue, I thought.
Tomasi, I think, just completely gets Nightwing. His characterization and writing of the character is just plain awesome.

The panels with young Dick and young Bruce were my favorite part of the issue.
I thought those few pages were some of the best expressions of the relationship between Dick and Bruce.
I doubt this series could've had a better ending.
The O&O story was cute.
And the final page was just epic. Maybe because of the BftC 'spoilers'. Maybe because of the "Something wicked this way comes" line, or maybe because of Scar's bleeding black light out of her eyes. Either way- Amazing issue. Loved it.

For those interested in the BftC spoilers/look into the future bit:

-Fake/Dead Batman confronting Nightwing
-Talia watching on as Dick trains with Damian in the Batcave.
-Batgirl (Babs) and Nightwing hooking up. [Memory or something that's going to happen?]
-Batsignal cracked from two Batarangs in it and....bleeding?
-Someone in a Batman suit holding a gun to a beaten Nightwing's head.

I don't think the Babs/Nightwing moment is something to come, not a memory. I don't think he ever wore this iteration of the Nightwing costume while Babs was still Batgirl.

Looking back on it with some common sense; It doesn't seem rational to place that image with all the others if it weren't an 'omen' that's to come.

Wait, #136? This was #153.

....right??

(Bought this and #152, because I sensed after the Two-Face story the series was ending with more character-driven one-shots - and I like Tomasi's writing so I suspect they'll be good.)

Hey everyone been reading the forum for years but I wanted to chime in here. Not sure if anyone noticed but the entire scene with Dick returning to Gotham was a panel by panel (well almost) homage to the scene in Batman Year One with Gordan arriving by train to Gotham. I guess you can interpret this as Batman Year One all over again, with Dick potentially being the new Batman.

Actually Bruce came in by plane. It was an homage to James Gordon coming in by train. And yeah, I got it. But points for them remembering Crime Alley wasn't literally a freaking alley but a street in a nice area called Park Row that was nicknamed Crime Alley.

heh I for one am kinda interested in a Dick/Damian team up providing that Dick can reform Damian without being a douche (I would I have said a dick but you know... )

Great issue and a bittersweet issue.

Nightwing will always be one of my favourite characters and hope to god dc give him the attention and panel space he deserves this summer.

Again, I can't commend peter tomasi enough, His 13 issues have washed away all the devin grayson and bruce johns garbage that was published over the years, chuck dixon's work was great too.

his HQ was in NYC (that's why the JSA was helping him pack, they're neighbors), this has been pretty well established in Tomasi's run

I was kind of hoping that this issue would recap the series as a whole, but it mostly was a setup for future stories and focused on Bruce. Even that page at the end showed him inside of Batman's cowl. How could the character ever stand on its own if he's always in Batman's shadow in his own book!?

He has called on the JSA twice for help both times for moving. Wildcat must be hating the guy by now.

Maybe it's Tim in the Nightwing costume getting beatup by Jason?

I didn't start reading Nightwing until "Batman R.I.P." Has Nightwing always been this good of a read? This issue was so well written, I'm seriously thinking about going and getting some trades, as well as many Back Up issues as I can...

Ever since Tomasi took over it's been amazing. He took over at issue 140.

Chuck Dixon's long run was very good. On the other hand, Devin Grayson's run and Bruce Jones' run have very few fans (trying to be charitable here). I felt that Marv Wolfman's issues were good, and would agree that Tomasi has done an increasingly good job over the course of his run.

There's no reason Tim would ever become Nightwing.

great issue and fitting tribute. Really did feel the emotions more in this episode than any other RIP related title. Tomasi better be on a bat-book after BFTC.

Surely everyone must now agree Babs will be back as Batgirl given the origins and omens segment?
