View Full Version : Anyone expect Geoff Johns to be the next Batman writer after Morrison?

I mean long term writer on the main title. He's never done Batman before, and I could see him wanting to at some point.

I doubt it. Doesn't seem his style for some reason. But hey, I'd start buying Batman if he took over.
Johns has expressed interest in Batman, but none of his previous experience working with the character suggests he would be a good fit.
He's also writing 23 other books at the moment, so I'm not sure he has time to develop a good arc for Batman.

i thought the exact same thing when i saw this topic title...
i just don't think johns would really fit the character well...he's more of the, uhm, heroes hero type writer, and batman doesn't fit that bill...
i cannot wait to see where else grant takes us before he's all said and done, and i really liked gaiman's first issue today...
it would've been nice had kubert gelled so nicely his first time on batman...it was almost like a completely different artist between his first books with grant and the work he did with neil today...
I actually think I'd prefer to see Johns handling a Nightwing series (assuming they bring that back)

Holy crap.
That is brilliant! Given his love of Titans why didn't I think of that before? That scene with Conner and Dick in infinite crisis is one of the best things he's done yet.
Though I've personally talked with Geoff Johns regarding this (he visited my local shop, it was cool....plus i've met him at cons, but this was the shop visit was when i got to talk to him) and he said he loves Batman, loves writing Batman but that he hasn't gotten a whole lot of interest from outside sources (his bosses, the fans etc.) that would prompt DC to place him on a Bat book.
let's see how black the blackest night is, let's see Bruce Wayne as a Black Lantern, eh? Though the buzz about Johns and Bats isn't about each other yet, it can easily happen down the line...and I'll be there.
I like the Batman appearances I've seen Johns write, but once more dude, you're idea regarding Johns on a Nightwing book is GOLD.

Yeah... I never really got the feeling that Johns was a "Batman-type" writer per se. His previous work just doesn't really have that sort of vibe to it, I guess.
Then again, crime novelist and Batman extraordinaire Greg Rucka will be writing Action Comics soon, so who knows?

It could be quite interesting to see Johns write a bat-book, but the few times he's written Batman have seemed, to me, that Johns doesn't care much for the character; however, I've never spoken to the man.

don't want to get too off topic, but if he were to come back as early as blackest night, it won't be as a black lantern...since, well, he's not exactly dead...

To be fair, it's an Action Comics without Superman (and with Nightwing and Flamebird in their place.)

For the second time, for that matter.
Well, okay, the first time was Adventures of Superman, but you get the idea.

I think Grant Morrison has ruined Batman for me.
Normally I'd be super psyched to think Geoff Johns would be working on Batman, but I'd just be like "It's good, but it's no Grant Morrison run."
So in a way, no. But in another way, maybe I need to start reading "normal" Batman stories again, because I'll need someone to segue me out of the Morrison age and nobody does "normal" superhero stories better than Johns at DC.

After reading BATMAN #686, I would KILL to have Gaiman take over Batman for good. KILL.
It was everything people THINK Morrison's run was, only better. It had all of the metatextual stuff many say they enjoy in Morrison, but paired with warmth, a sense of fun, and a whole lot less bullshit. Reading it felt joyful, even though it was a story about "Batman being dead".
And Kubert did such an amazing job with the art, he can stay too, if he can keep doing it like this.

Me too GM has made lost interest Batman main.
I need "normal" Batman stories too. Thats why im a fan of Detective comics.
Im not sure about Johns though.
Batman needs crime book writers like before. People that know the history of the character and how to write him.
Have you read Dini?

I think I remember Grant saying he'd be on the book indefinately. I'm pretty sure they'll let him continue to write this as long as he wants to keep writing it - I, for one, will not complain. However, I pick up everything both Grant and Geoff write anyways, so I'd appreciate both styles.

Regardless if he fits Batman precisely or not, Johns is such a good writer that I'd let him have a go at Batman, see if he can make himself fit.
I think he would do great things on Batman.
(Let's not forget that Johns wrote some Batman B&W stories and has written Batman in many non-Batman titles.)

You TOTALLY missed what I was going for, but yeah, I liked Dini's run on Detective a lot, too.

You're going to tell ME what I enjoyed?
And they call Morrison fans pompous...

As has been mentioned, Morrison is expected to have a pretty lengthy stay on Batman. On the other hand, I think he does have a definite end in mind, from the comments I've read. Since Johns has written almost every DC book except Batman, I'm sure he'll have his turn eventually. He's like so many other writers: some people adore him, some people can't stand him. Personally, I thought his Tim Drake was spot on in Teen Titans; far superior to the way he was portrayed in his own title at the time.
