View Full Version : Who's your favorite New Student? A-List version

i love me some New X-Men! Yost turned a slightly cerebral and dramatic group of kiddos into a fascinating bunch of post-traumatic survivors. Young X-Men has been fun too. New slants and a nice tie into the old gaurd as well as a spotlight on some kids that didn't get their turn as much in the previous versions.
So that said, and please without hate in your heart, tell us who is your favorite and WHY?!
1. X-23
2. Pixie
3. Anole
4. Elixer
5. Hellion
6. Armor
7. Dust
8. Blindfold
9. Surge
10. Other - and I know this is a huge list so I'll post another thread for the D-List members of the gang!

My favorite is X-23 and it's hard for me to put my love for her into words, but I will try.
Why is she my favorite? I enjoy her story. She is something unique. I love how out of touch she is with humanity and her journey towards it is remarkable. Ever since I saw that episode of X-men: Evolution I liked the character and she is the character that caused me to pick up my first comic (New X-men #20). She might be a clone of Wolverine, but she is not anything like him. Not at all. In my opinion she is better.
Her story is so tragic and heartbreaking. But she is a survivor and she made it through it, even though she still has scars. I also love how she is so intelligent. She thinks when she fights or does anything. But she's not arrogant or proud with it. She is silent and observant. And still somewhat detached. And yet at the same time, you can see how she wants to be a part of the group. That was very apparent in New X-men. You could sense her yearning.
And of course, she is just so bad ass. I'm sure if she wanted to, she could find a way to defeat all of the X-men by herself
as for the order:
1. X-23
2. Pixie
3. Dust
4. Elixir
5. Mercury
6. Hellion
7. Rockslide
8. Anole

I couldn't decide between Dust and blindfold.
Dust is a fabulous Morrison created Superstorm.
But Blindfold is Destiny II
CHOICES.

Dust is the most original character with the most potential. One of the best contributions that Morrison added to X-verse. But I maybe hoping in vain that she makes it out of young x-men alive. Killing her would be a huge waste.:frown:

X-23 because she is an emotional wreck who cuts herself and others.
Armor because she wishes to replace Jubilee in Wolverine and the X-men's hearts.
Elixir because his powers are what got Vanisher onto the X-Force team. I am thankful to him for that.
Dust because she is so naive that she thought that just because she defeated Exodus (with help) that she could win against Magma. And now she is dying for her horrible decision.
Anole because he is willing to set aside appearances and date an ugly 200 year old troll like Greymalkin.
Hellion because X-23 loves him and she scares the crap out of him. And now Yost and Kyle want to kill him.
Surge because she is a twat.

Pixie and Blindfold. They are characters who are different and colourful and I think add more to the X-Men roster through their very existence!
Also, I would've voted for Armor and X-23 and Dust, but I didn't want to go overboard.
But I like them too.
Any of them apart from Hellion, really.

#1) - X-23 - I love me some Laura. I think of it as an updated Wolverine as far as problems and emotional problems. She fits into more recent social groups and appeals to newer readers. The stuff I don't love:she strikes me enough like Logan to still make we worry it's just a marketing gimmick to gte fanboys to ogle Wolverine. It is possible to get to much of a good thing. Claw based mutants with healing factors are dime a dozen, hard to stand out. She manages at the moment though.
#2) Dust - I like Sandman from Spider-Man. This one has more personality.
#3) Pixie - I can't put my finger on it. I think her powers are nifty and the fact she'll be a maig weilding mutant will be nice someday. I'm not sure how much I like her now, but I think with the potential she has I'll like her someday quite a bit.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c6/Prodigy.jpg
After the events of M-Day, David is one of the many mutants who lost their powers. However, due to his extensive studying prior to coming to Xaviers, he's maintained a rather high intellect. He created a Danger Cave, a training room for the rest of his peers, and shows an extensive knowledge of the past missions of the X-Men. [4].
Along with his intellect, Prodigy has been displayed as an extremely competent leader. Early in the series, Danielle Moonstar initially chose Prodigy to become leader of the New Mutants Squad. He would initially decline[5] but would later offer to be co-leader after convincing from Wind Dancer[6]. Both Cyclops[7] and Danielle Moonstar[8] have acknowledged his leadership skills; Danielle going so far as to state, "[Prodigy]is the best strategic thinker at the school." He is later made a substitute instructor for the students at the institute.
Although depowered, David has recently regained access to all the skills and knowledge that he absorbed when he was still a mutant. This was made possible when the mental block in his brain was removed by the Stepford Cuckoos. Now he can recall the fighting abilities and scientific knowledge of many of the X-Men including Beast's medical knowledge, Forge's and Professor Xavier's expert standing in various subjects, and Wolverine and Kitty Pryde's martial arts, etc. Considering that he had some contact with nearly all the X-Men, students, visitors, and various other people over the course of his life before he lost his powers, the exact scope of his collective abilities is hard to ascertain. Though he can no longer learn skills like he did with his powers, he can still learn normally.

Anole. I like him in all of his appearances, even though he is one of the least developed amongst the A-Listers.

Hellion is my favorite, I liked his attitude, he was a bigger jerk than Sunspot, it's nice to have characters with flaws. I also like Surge and Anole.
Armor and X-23 are at the bottom. I just don't get Armor, at all. Nothing I've seen from her stands out as special, she's just there. I've never liked X-23, I remember an old "What the...?" issue using a female version of Wolverine for a joke. The only thing I've ever found interesting about her was in that issue of uncanny when she was copying Psylocke's expressions and actions, trying to be like her.
So to rate them:
1) Hellion
2) Surge
3) Anole
4) Prodigy
5) Elixir
6) Rockslide
7) Mercury
8) Dust
9) Pixie

Of the choices given, here they are in order:
1. Anole - He's definitely my favorite. Awesome powers and visual.
2. Elixir - So happy he's getting some spotlight nowadays in X-Force. Keep it coming!
3. Hellion - Needs to return! He's a huge powerhouse. How can the X-Men not use him?
4. X-23 - Freakishly amazing. Sooooo much cooler than Wolverine. About 1000 times cooler.
5. Dust - Better not die. She could be great if she joined the big leagues.
6. Surge - Used to be way cooler than she is now. She needs to chill out for a bit, then be fun again.
7. Armor - I liked her in Whedon's Astonishing, but I havent seen much of her since. But I think she could be really cool.
8. Pixie - Is pretty annoying
9. Blindfold - Doesnt really have much going for her. But I liked her old lady garb in Whedon's Astonishing.

I don't really like Armor either, like someone else said I don't feel like she has a standout personality. Cool powers and haircut though.
Mercury should have the spot on the Uncanny roster that's being wasted on Pixie.
I don't feel like she would've been much better. I still think it would've been refreshing for the young naive new X-Man to be male, like Anole.

So happy to see a thread like this. So much Young X-Men hate these days it's nice to be reminded about the kids I love.
Um why isn't Prodigy on the list??
My favorite kid has always been David from day 1. A smart, clean, dependable kid, who makes up for a lack of phsycial ability with a keen mind and leadership skills. I find he's too often overlooked because he was depowered and wasn't on many covers during the Yost and Kyle era, but he was still very much a main cast member.
1. Prodigy
2. Anole
3. Rockslide - This guy just keeps rising on my list.
4. Hellion - has slipped from 2 mostly because of lack of use
5. Elixir - he's been all over my list in the past, but I love him in X-Force.
6 Surge - was higher but C&C kinda drove her into the ground.
7. X-23 - I didn't really like her in NXM but in X-Force I get her.
8. Pixie - should be higher but Uncanny is killing her. She works better as supporting player with the kids than the new Kitty.
9. Mercury
10 Dust - Dust has been higher on my list but she's kinda bland as a character and thus she's slipped.
That's probably my list. Match was my favorite background kid, but I don't like rating them against main characters.

Dust, X-23 and Anole.
I love Dust cause she's one of a kind. Loved the powerset and I think she has lots of story potential.
Must love the emotionless-self mutilated-ex-prostitute killer who just starting to learn how to braid.
I really like Anole's visual. The Quest for Magik is certainly the highlight of his X-Men days. I think he and Dust deserve to move into another book after Young X-Men ended.

Out of the choices, I would have to say Anole since he cares deeply for his teammates, has cool powers/appearance, the potential to be a leader and is overall very interesting as a character.
However, I wish rockslide was included. I think he has shown the most character growth out of any New X-man. In the begining, I saw him as just a cheap grey Thing knock-off, but I really think he has grown tremendously since then. Hes obviously great for lighter moments with his hilarious one-liners, but he also cares more then anything for his teammates and that really has been the central point of the character since the Decimation. He really had strong moments in the Quest for Magik arc and the Children of X-Men arc. I also like his scenes in Young X-Men when he slugged Cyclops for decieving the team (even though it was Pierce impersonating Cyclops) and then later when he opened up emotionally to Cyclops about Wolfcub's death. It showed that he is a lot more then just comic relief.

Glad to see Hellion getting some love. All the disdain the vocal contingent were throwing his way almost had me thinking he was universally reviled.
I really enjoy how he's tragically flawed. He kind of reminds me of the Christian Troy of the X-verse. On one hand he a deep sense of compassion, bravery, and obligation. At the right moments, he's capable of extraordinary heroism.
On the other hand, he's kind of a dick at the same time too. There's a selfishness and ego to the character that rears it's head from time to time.
In any given situation, it's hard to know which side of Hellion's personality is going to surface, and that's why I find him interesting. He's not just a stock character with one defining personality trait.

A lot of that hate is due to people getting sick of NXM fans in general. The character has his fans and detractors as well, but I think people are more willing to vocalize hatred, even of characters they don't know much about, when they dislike the fanbase.
