I've been holding back on reading Batman until I had all the RIP issues in hand. Now I see I need to read FC 6 and 7 to move on past 863 or w/e it is....great :\
Do I then need to read the entire series to understand what happens in 6 and 7?

nope...and you really don't need to read either of those books to keep up in batman...you just really won't know the exact "why", but it's common knowledge that bruce is gone...

Agreed. It's really a personal decision. If you can live with simply knowing that Batman is believed to be dead, you don't need to read them.

On the other hand, if you want the details, and only care about Batman (not the rest of the DCU), then read the following, in this order:

FC #1-2
Batman #682-683
FC #6
optional: FC #7 (last 2 pages only)

Batman #682-683 is a FC tie-in; I wouldn't advise reading them unless you're also reading FC (though others may disagree with this)

I'd say you don't really need to read Final Crisis, unless you're an OCD completist.

Now you tell us! Can someone give us the overall gist of the whole story, for those of who are not reading FC? Thanks.

Of the parts involving Batman? Sure.

Following the events of RIP, Bruce makes his way back to the Batcave and meets Alfred there. They confirm to the reader that all of Hurt's claims were lies and Bruce receives a call from the Justice League.
This call is related to the death of the New God Orion; Batman inspects the body and determines he was shot by a bullet that left no entry or exit orifice. Later on, John Stewart finds a Radion bullet buried in the ground (Radion is a substance that is toxic to Gods) but is attacked by another mysterious Green Lantern.
Bruce tries to examine this bullet in the Hall of Justice, but finds the equipment unfit so decides to store it in his belt and take it back to the Batcave; Unfortunately, Bruce also deduces that one of the Alpha Lanterns was the one who attacked John Stewart, after seeing John's ring mark in the hand of the Alpha Lantern. (John punched his attacker before falling)
The Alpha Lantern then reveals herself as Granny Goodness and abducts Batman; She takes him to the Command-D bunker where Mokkari and Symian use a telepathic parasite to steal his memories and trauma so they can create Bat-clone soldiers.
Batman proves to be more too much for them, and turns the parasite against them, freeing himself. He then grabs one of the God's guns, loads it with the Radion bullet and faces Darkseid who had taken over half of mankind and was controlling them from that very same bunker.
Batman wounds Darkseid with the God-killing bullet, but is hit by Darkseid's Omega Sanction, "The death that is life"; This is Darkseid's trademark ability which can do multiple things, from disintegrating things to torture them making them live horrible lives to send them to another era.

After being hit by this beam, only Batman's charred corpse remains...

..Until we see the last pages of Final Crisis #7, where we can see Bruce in the prehistory covered in shadows and drawing a Batman symbol on a wall.

(Probably so someone finds it and goes back to rescue him)

If you can join two and two together on your own then you don't really "need" it.

However if you're someone who has trouble with jumpy storytelling, obscure characters or deliberately vague elements then you're not going to enjoy the FC series at all...or even RIP for that matter.

You definitely won't get the big picture with just 6 & 7 but it's still the main batman parts if that's all you're after. You can read the whole FC 1-7 and still not really understand what the hell you just read

I don't particularly love or understand FC but that doesn't prevent me from calling RIP one of the greatest batman runs ever

I just pretend that Batman is MIA as a result of the helicopter crash

Only if you don't have Batman #682 and 683. Basically, if you want to see everything Bruce did in "Final Crisis", then just pick up the seven issues and be done with it.
