On Thursday, March 5, Project CBRunway, CBR's contest focusing on costume and character design, returns with an all new season! The competition will pit artists against one another in weekly design challenges on the Artist & Writer Showcase. Designers will have only five days in which to complete and post their designs. During the following two days CBR posters will decide which designers advance to the next round until, after twelve weeks, only three remain and face off once again at CBR Fashion Week.

The winning designer will walk away with an exciting prize pack, inluding his or her choice of one of:

Eliminated contestants should participate in the Play Along at Home (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=8525039) thread for the challenge immediately following their elimination. I really liked the model sheet idea. In fact, I have the audition drawn up, but I'm going to be y time-crunched in March, so I opted not to try out. I'm really looking forward to following the contest though.

I just looked back through the Challenge 1 and Audition voting and judging threads to see who did what.

I was surprised to see that some of the people who had auditions that I liked had challenge 1 entries I did not like, and some of the people who I felt had weak audition entries had a strong challenge 1 entry.

It'll be interesting to watch the results of these threads.

Manon

I'd like to get to know some of the other contestants more and this seemed like the best thread to ask in. I'd like to know age, background in art, general interests in comics, as well as their likes/dislikes when it comes to designs.

It's a little late, but I'd like to know this for the current contestants, those that have already been eliminated, and those that auditioned, but didn't make the cut as well.

As for me, I'm a 24-year old dude from the southeastern united states that's been studying art at the university level since '02.

As for comics, I have a wide variety of interests, but I hate reading mediocre comics. Therefore, I don't keep up with continuity or big events, really. However, I usually don't get into manga/anime (but there are a few exceptions.)

As for designs, I think real-world wearability is important, and such prefer designs such as Paul Pope's batman over stuff like Jim Lee's.

LewMoxinsghost
04-02-2009, 02:18 AM
I'm really bad at stuff like this, but I think it is a good idea, so I'll start. Well, I'm originally from the northernmost part of the Old South in the US, I'm older than 25 but younger than 35 and 15 at heart. I grew up reading all the Batman titles before Batman was the overdone monstrosity that he is today. I say that tongue-in-cheek, because I actually love that things have gone so well for the character. I just kind of miss the days when the character's face and logo wasn't plastered on everything possible. One of my cherished possessions is a a four pack of Batman action figures that were made in China but came from the Czech Republic. Two of the Batmen are repainted Secret Wars Spiderman figures with different heads, one of which is riding a red motorcycle clearly marked "Spider-Man." The other two look like old wrestling figures that have been repainted. On the back of the package, it says "Collect them all new Batmans!" and then lists the other possible figures, each with a subtitle of "Matman." (Like "Mechanized Matman!", ect.) Chances are if you also like and find this sort of thing endlessly interesting and amusing we'll hit it off pretty well. I've since learned to appreciate lots of other types of comic books.

As far as background in art, I don't work in the industry, but consider it my full time hobby. When I was a kid I ran a tiny comic book company and put out xeroed comic titles. One of which, Nite-Hawk Presents, ran for ten issues with two annuals and one tradepaperback. I restored one of those annuals and posted it here, but my art thread has newer stuff. My art thread is very disjointed and disorganzed- it has some truly embarrassing stuff posted, but it has been good therapy for me. I'm thinking of starting a new one some day. I've worked as a graphic designer before, but found the work to be endlessly boring. Mostly I find the freedom in art to be the most appealing aspect and tend to seek jobs that offer me more of that. I also play music, although lately I've been spending most of my time trying to develop visual skills. My big goal is to get a solid script for my epic story idea together within the next three years.

Sorry, I was putting it off.

I'm 29 and I live in Baltimore, MD. I teach middle school art full time for 7 years now and live with my wife shawna (who is a potter. she also worked as an elementary school art teacher but is leaving her job to be a full time potter) and our 2 cats stranger and mexico.

I was an illustration major in college and now I run a business making and selling my own screenprinted apparel but as a lot of you already know, my real passion is making comics. I have 3 published books out (Birth, NOVO 1 and NOVO 2) with a few more on the way. Even though I don't make any real money on them, making them and having ANY kind of readership is a childhood dream come true.

someday, I want to leave teaching and be a self sustaining artist, I think I have about 2 years before I can follow my wife in that, its coming though.

Thats me in a nutshell

How do you like teaching? Have you ever have any problems with administration or students finding your comic work and disapproving of it?

How do you like teaching? Have you ever have any problems with administration or students finding your comic work and disapproving of it?

I am actually really lucky to have a job in the most supportive community you could imagine. IWhen the kids and parents find out what I do they show so much support - I think the barnes and noble down the street from the school has gone through at least 50 copies of the books just from kids parents getting it for them - I don't really advertise it either. I mean, the kids know I make books, I'd be a bad art teacher if I didn't let them know that I was a practicing artist - but I never push it.

my administration has been wildly supportive too. I've had my kids come and see me at conventions as well as other teachers. My boss has even come to a couple of my openings.

as for the teaching itself, I love it. When it came time that either my wife or I could leave our job, it was an easy choice. I don't want to teach forever but I love my job, the community and the kids so much. My goal is to eventually leave, but I know I'll cry on the day that I do.

Figures...you'd have to do this right after I take a two month sabatical from the game to focus on my drawings for this competition and Small Press Idol....

Anyhoo...I'm 35, married, with two adorable little red-headed girls. I work as a creative designer for an online safety training company that's been developing very successfully over the last few years. While I find myself often bored with the stuff I work on there, I'm sticking it out because the pay is good and I've gots a family to support.

And I've loved comics for as long as I can remember. Same goes with my drawing. My goals right now are to start self-publishing my own graphic novels (or through one of the big independent companies). I don't really have any Marvel/DC asspirations anymore, but I wouldn't say no to them if they offered me any work sometime down thew road...

My first grpahic novel will most likely be the project I've got submitted in Small Press Idol right now - Boulder Colorado, which I'll be bugging everyone here to vote on as soon as I get my second round submissions in (hopefully in the next 10 days).

Goat,
That's rad about your kids. I might be a little biased, but I'd like to say that redheaded people generally are the best people in the world. *ahem*.

Spagh,
It'd be totally different in this area. By using my real name on all of this kind of stuff online, I'm doing potential damage to future jobs as a teacher around here.

Luckily, I've no interest in teaching here, and knowing that there are communities out there supportive in that way is relieving.

Me too! It has millions of options!! I play on triumph and virtue mostly. I created my first villain today. He's a vampire.

My other character is named Doctor O'Hare, and was an earlier version of the female Doctor O'Hare Rabbit entry from last round. He is a lot of fun to play, and was pretty popular in the sewers with his healing powers. I have another character named Harry Smalls, but he sucks.
