Hey all!

The rules are:

1. Must be a cover from an actual published comic

2. Only one entry per person.

3. Have fun!

I dunno if this has been done before, but this week's topic is

Lame cover gimmicks

Interpret as you will (i.e. cheap flashy stuff to get people to buy the comic, or lame gimmicks that a character uses featured on the cover, whatever).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/Schornforce/225-1.jpg

Oh boy. A holo disc.

Thanks, Marvel.

In with the bullet hole.

Every 50th issue has an even rarer cover enhancement - powder burns! And I shit you not, that was actually considered a selling point to increase the rarity.

I only want to contest the lameness of this one, because the enhancement actually makes sense with the character. But only with Silver Surfer. Not even with Silver Sable.

No fair. That includes everything anybody could think of.

Multiple covers (collect them all). Polybagged (so it will be valuable later). A moving cover. A reversible cover. A poster (it's like two collector's items in one!)

Plus it's a collector's edition!

Here is your challenge. Find the Marvel series which began in the early '90s (say '90-'92) that didn't guest star Spider-Man within 10 issues (I think I can think of two).

Next challenge. Find the series that didn't guest star one of:
Spider-Man, Punisher, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Venom

within its first 10 issues. I'm almost sure that doesn't exist. I'd be curious how many new series of that era didn't feature at least two of those characters showing up within the first year.

Sigh. I miss the old running gag I had on Alvaro's Avengers board. Since he seemed to just disappear, we used to get people regularly asking "Whatever happened to Century?" At one point, Kurt Busiek answered that "He was eaten by rats." Which later morphed into the fictitious comic one-shot special "Century: Eaten By Rats".

Although to this day I don't remember the real answer.

Oh, Chris. Wow did I ever. Can I not read?! My head hangs in shame.

I was in comic book limbo-land in the 90's when it seems the "lame gimmick covers" reigned supreme. And it pains me to search that lost decade for further lameness than what is already revealed here.

Yeah, DonC got it.

There was a time when Robin II was the benchmark for gimmicky covers. If I recall right, issue 1 had 5 versions, issue 2 had 4 versions, etc...

There were different hologram covers, or you could get a bagged version with all the covers. I think that version may have come with a trading card. There was nothing like it.

Until Robin III came along and showed the world what gimmicky really meant.

Chris N
01-27-2009, 04:21 PM
If I may walk down memory lane a bit, when I was in 4th and 5th grade in 1990-1991, comics were big in my school. But everybody was concerned with collectibility. You did not open polybagged comics. You bought every cover. If a new issue 1 came out, you grabbed it (look how much Spider-Man #1 had been worth, especially the platinum cover! X-Men #1 was bound to be even HUGER!)

I had a reputation as not being a serious comic book guy back then because I didn't take enough care of my comics.

My defining moment as a fan and what separated me from all my classmates (only a couple of whom still read comics today) came when I purchased a complete set of the Rise of the Midnight Sons crossover., Every issue was polybagged. They were my first polybagged comic. Peer pressure at the time was not to open them because they then become worthless, but darnit, I wanted to read those comics.

So I did. I read them and liked them (though Darkhold was too weird for me at that tender age).

Later, I opened up my polybagged copies of the X-Cutioner's Song story.

Those I should have left bagged.

(The other thing that separated me from my classmates is that they were heavily into Image. I bought Youngblood #1 and that convinced me to not read anymore Image until many years later when I was in college looking for good crime comics and I came across Goldfish)
