Go here (http://www.newsarama.com/film/010916-Reeves-Bebop.html) and tell me what you think. CBR's Comic Reel (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=19581) also has the news.

So, Keanu Reeves is Spike Spiegel. Your thoughts?

(Air Guitaring)

I should've resisted, I just couldn't.

Was there a thread about this? or am I thinking of another forum?

There was a thread. I remember it being about the movie plot being based on the first episode of the series.

Bruce Willis would make a good Jet.

Reeves is terrible! A great storyline down the tubes.

Reeves has none of the characteristics of Spike except for the lanky build.

I don't remember much about Cowboy Bebop, at least not as much as I used to. When I think of Spike, I think of charisma. Keanu is not charismatic.

Horrible choice. But oh well I'm not going to see it and at least the original creators likely get a huge pay check. So good for them.

Still have reruns and the actual Cowboy Bebop movie on DVD, who needs this live action crap?

Yeah, I posted this thread when it was just a horrible rumor http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=250195

Now that its been confirmed I shall weep.

That anyone hiring Reeves for any role but that of a brainless doofus is pissing their money down a rat hole. That's the only kind of role he plays well.

Basically my view.

I've got nothing against Reeves as Spike, but who the hell thinks a live-action Cowboy Bebop is something people need to see?

Keanu.... Urg. Based on the first three episodes..... weeeeellllll *maybe* *might* work but..... no Ed?! But, then again.... who would they get to play Ed? If you think casting Spike is tough don't even think about how hard it would be to cast Ed.

Although, I must say, I like the other poster's idea of Bruce Willis as Jet.

I for one am confident that Keanu Reeves will bring his "A" game to this role, delivering an acting performance that will compass the same emotional range that we saw in Johnny Mnemonic, Point Break, and The Matrix Revolutions. Heh.

Moreover, who the hell thinks that a live-action film could make the anime series any justice?

Also, Clive Owen as Spike and Bruce Willis as Jet? Interesting.

Not dismissing the problem of casting Ed (or Faye) but I'll go one better.

Ein.

Hollywood big budget productions and cute animals have a long and ugly history together.

You could say the same thing about any movie, though... I'd actually like to see it.

Ellen Page?

Dakota Fanning

No... god no.

I have liked Page in the few films I've seen her in but I have two concerns

1) this is Ed, which means Page is much too old.

2) even if Page weren't too old Ed is a manic character from start to finish and Page has never done manic or shown any evidence of manic. Page is best at tackling snarky aloof characters that don't like to let on much about their emotional lives ... which is a much better fit for Faye. But we all know exactly why Page wouldn't be a good physical fit for Faye in a live-action Bebop movie.

On that note, since she's going to be in genre flicks for the foreseeable future maybe someone should just go get Beckinsale signed up for Faye already. Rather have her cast as Faye than Jolie at any rate and Jolie's trolling for Oscars now anyway. Since this movie is going to be made might as well cast someone who could get the notorious outfit to work who could conceivably play the role.

All that only matters if they're keeping Ed as the ridiculous character from the show... which I can only assume they wouldn't. But I was mostly thinking of looks. Ellen Page can play much younger than she actually is. And just because an actor hasn't done a specific role, doesn't mean they can't.

And keep Beckinsale's terrible acting away... we've already got to deal with Keanu.

As Bob Dylan put it, if you're gonna make crap you might as well load it on. :)

Setting aside age I think Page wouldn't be a good fit for Ed unless the character were drastically redefined. Beckinsale may be bad but Page WAS in X3.

I'm not going to instantly assume it's going to be crap right out the gate. I mean, I like the show and everything, but it's not hallowed ground.

And isn't Keanu doing this because he wants to... because he's a fan? And aren't they supposedly bringing in the production team from the show?

Beckinsale may be bad but Page WAS in X3.

So? I don't get it... you're saying you'd rather have a bad actress in the role instead of a good actress who was in a less than stellar film?

The closer they hew to the original material the less Faye or Ed or Ein are necessary in a movie. They will have plenty of work to do establishing Spike and Jet as characters. See if the live-action movie makes any money and THEN worry about including later characters.

I could be pleasantly surprised when this movie comes out but I'm also very much not counting on that, either. I think you're hoping to get characters into the first film that I don't think are smart to put in the first film. We might just differ on that. If Reeves and company are going through with this the only smart way to do it is with just Spike and Jet. If reception is good for that they can look at the by-then inevitable sequel.

So you aren't interested in seeing the movie if you're not hoping for any characters. ;)
