And now we reach the award for Best Villain of 2008. Here we go. There were three villains out ahead on this one and three more tying on 9 nominations apiece. So Six candidates in total for you. They are:

Bastion : Admit it, how many of you thought you'd never see this guy again? The big bad from Operation: Zero Tolerance showed up again this year, after the Purifiers went out of their way to retrieve him over in X-Force. And dear lord, what nasty things he's been up to. Using Phalanx technology to resurrect the some of the X-Men's deadliest foes? Yeah, that's pretty nasty. He is one cold calculated machine. It's great to have him back.

Mystique : A busy year for our Raven. Betraying (and ultimately killing) Mister Sinister, being hunted down and left for dead by Wolverine, and trying very hard to kill off Iceman. Having spent much of 2007 trying to get in the X-Men's good books you knew it was only a matter of time before she showed her true colours... Is she your pick for 2008?

Sebastian Shaw : The original Black King just can't be kept down. Having sidestepped Mr Sinister's attempt at taking over his body, after his death, Shaw has now teamed up with the newly (re)born Miss Sinister. Sod the Lord Imperial, you can't keep a Shaw down. Most recently seen trying to acquire the services of Daken, in Original Sin. That didn't quite work out, but I doubt that's the end of it as far as Shaw's concerned.

Miss Sinister : We still don't know the whole story as far as this one's concerned. After Sinister's plan to transfer his personality into the body of any of the children he worked on at the Almagordo research centre was foiled by Xavier, Shaw and Gambit the woman who claims her real name to be 'Claudine Renko' turned up at the Hellfire Club. She's been working with Shaw, and trying to restore the dark and unsavoury memories of Daken. She does appear to have the abilities of the late Mr Sinister, but not the memories. Plenty potential here.

The Purifiers : A busy year too for Rev Matthew Risman and the Purifiers. From their continuing battle to try and kill the baby in Messiah Complex to their unholy alliance with Bastion in X-Force. I mean, seriously, these guys created a host of freaky angels by tearing Warren wings off him, extracting the traces of Apocalypse's former work, and creating an army with nasty metal wings. That was a bit $%&Łed up. Arguably they may have bitten off more they can chew with Bastion, but it's been an interesting year for them.

Martinque Jason (Lady mastermind) : In many ways 2007 was a year for Regan Wyngarde, as she joining up with Rogue's team of X-Men. But 2008 brought us the return of her half-sister, and the original Lady Mastermind, Martinque Jason. And she's no pushover, either. She had the whole of San Francisco believing it was 1969, and that she was some kind of Goddess. Emma Frost finally shattered her illusion, but Martinique escaped, to be offered a position in Madelyne Pryor's new Sisterhood of Mutants.

So there you go. Six nasties to vote on. One choice to make. This poll will be open until the end of the month, and feel free to discuss it below.

Over to you...

Not thrilled about the villains this year, I have to say, I chose Mystique since she's the one I am closest to almost liking.
I miss the days of Cassandra Nova and Magneto (specifically the first arc of adjectiveless X-Men).

My vote goes to Bastion. I loved the way they built the guy up for O:ZT back in the 90s. I loved the way that event was going, right up until the final third. Then the whole thing just went wrong. Bastion disappeared, and we didn't even get his origin explained. That happened much later in a Cable/Machine Man annual. Such a waste.

It's great to see him back, because he's just so cold-heartedly logical. The Purifiers really have bitten off more than they can chew, there. I find it greatly amusing that an extremist group get uncomfortable when they realise they've enlisted somebody more extreme than they are...

Mystique was a close second, but Miss Sinister's performance was brilliant.

Oh holy crap.... I agree with Timbox.

Miss Sinister.

She's like the golden age Batman villains of yesteryear. She's campy, unintentional funny and verging on ridiculous which is why she is great. She's not a wooden "I want to take over the world" villain of the month, she is positively barking mad.

I like that. Its different from the usual comic book fare. The fact that it seems unintentional when it may be totally planned is great. That said I still miss the Sinister with balls. He had an aura of real malevolence.

I was in doubt between Purifiers and Bastion. Voted on the former, since they have done (even) more damage.

And anyone voting in Miss Sinister should be banned forever.

I voted for Bastion. His appearances in X-Force have been just plain awesome.

The Purifiers have really bitten off more than they can chew.

Claudine was hands down the best character, best villain, best surprise of the year. When I first saw her, I thought she was crap. But Carey pulled her applebottom out of the fire.

Regan was Lady M!

I don't remember her being alive much this year, but I totally love her. Even though she's so wrong for the X-Men, I want her back! She should lay low and this pretending to be dead thing should work for her.

I voted for Mystique because she has appeared and made a boring Iceman tale tolerable and Get Mystique was tons of fun.

Yay cute baby Mystique!

Mystique!

"Get Mystique" was great, and she still gets carry over cred from MC

Mystique is going to be in a hell of a lot of trouble once Claudine Renko gets her hands on her.

Miss Sinister should thank the Red Queen for stealing the "Most ridiculous character of 2008" award.

That honor goes Enrique McCoy and Puma. The award is being shared this year.

lol I have no idea who they are, but I'm gonna guess they're from that Claremont mini with the X-Men's future kids or something? I'm also gonna guess that if I had read it, I would agree with you.

Enrique was from that mini, but Puma was an alternate reality Beast (with a tail!) from New Exiles. They appeared in the same month.

Here endeth the lesson!

Nah.

I don't think Martinique was ever 'Lady Mastermind' except in X-Men: The End where they were like...identical telepathic statue things.

The Purifiers are not a villain. You people need to stop voting incorrectly. The group known as The Purifiers is about as effective as The Hellfire Cult.

Actually, she only narrowly missed getting into one awards category. Sadly it would have been Worst X-Character...
