View Full Version : Profanity in ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY HC

I'm not exactly outraged or anything. I was just REALLY shocked when I purchased and opened my copies of the ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY hardcovers to find profanity in place of the Q-bert-ese (i.e. $#!+) that was printed in the actual issues of The Authority. Then I was shocked that no one else was shocked when I mentioned it to them.
What do you all think about this? I thought retailers would be displeased because they apparently weren't warned that The Authority issues were reprinted with profanity where there was none before. The one I spoke to kinda shrugged and said he wouldn't sell The Authority to a kid, anyway, most likely.
Any other Authority HC discussions are more than welcome, too. :)

Can't really comment on that - I seem to (mis?)remember the original books as having the profanity in it.
And it doesn't bother me either way.
We Brits are very liberal-minded and profane as a matter of course. :D
Just look at Morrison...and Ellis...and Miller...

There wasn't profanity in the original books? What?
Always been in my ones.

Heh. Maybe it was just the books that stayed in the U.S. that substituted the $#!+ for the s-word. Heck, even @$$hole was substituted for "asshole" at least a couple of times.
I LOVE the hardcovers. No doubt. But it was pretty darn surprising to see them cursing with *gasp* real curse-words.
Strange that DC would make that change without some type of notification to the retailers or warning for potential consumers. I double-checked my tpb's to make sure I wasn't misremembering. Now, if you want to argue that the tpb's and the issues were different, then... I'd disagree, but couldn't be 100% sure.

My copies had profanity and I'm pretty sure Canada and the US get the same printings.

I must agree that 3-to-1 doesn't look too good for our hero (me). It'd help if someone who purchased their books in the U.S. responded, though.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Luckily I've got my Authority issues at work with me.
Issue one has an ass, a goddamn, and that's about as bad as it gets.
Issue two has another goddamn and a sonofabitch.
Issue three has a bitch.
Issue doesn't really have anything.
That's all I've really got time to look through. Other than some random hells, bastards, and damns, the worst of what I saw was listed. If you've got issue reference from the hardcover that I could look at in the issues, let me know.

Cool. Thx. (Btw, I started that thread. It's on the Comm board, if you're interested, and called Mystery CBR Theater 2004.)
The most I can tell you, at the moment, is that "asshole" (which, oddly enough is considered to be different from "ass" kinda like "goddamn" is bleeped out, but "damn" isn't) was censored in Millar's issues of The Authority that featured the Avengers knock-offs (after The Doctor found and ran with baby Jenny). I couldn't tell you which issues, exactly, but it was during that fight that The Doctor said "Oh shit" and The Midnighter (and someone else) said "asshole."
I feel so dirty after typing that paragraph.

#1: I have no idea what thread you're talking about.
#2: I found the wirty dird in my copy. Issue #14 has Jack Hawksmoor saying, "Dibs on the #$%hole in the fatigues." Then the fatigued man says, "Who are you calling an #$%hole?" Then Midnighter says, "Sorry, is "%$*#head" more appropriate?" before bashing his head in.
So yeah, looks like the comics don't have the REALLY bad ( ) cussing in them.
Could you check something else out for me? In the same issue, Engineer takes the Blob counterpart into space where he explodes. Afterwards, she holds up two fingers in his general direction. I assume she's supposed to be flipping him off. If the cussing has been "corrected," I wonder if this has.

#1 This (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=25244) is the thread I meant. It's the one I asked you about via p.m.
#2 Thank you.
re: "Could you check..."
Already checked it out. They didn't alter the image back to its original form (which WAS flipping him off). They left it in the two-finger form which I understand to be the UK equivalent.

Ah, thanks.
And I didn't make the connection with the PM. Thanks for giving me a heads up!

No problem.
Here's a site that breaks down the many censored panels in The Authority, including the one you asked about: http://www.sequart.com/authorityCENSORSHIP.htm
Enjoy.
P/S Let me know what you think of that pic edit. It's a FAMILY GUY reference/in-joke. If you think it's unfunny, *shrugs* lemme know that, too, I guess. :)

The first time I saw a '$%$@' in the Authority. (I believe this was around issue 13 or 14).
I thought to myself 'What the hell! This is the Authority! They can't censor this!'.
How innocent I was. But at least I was a few dollars richer every month when I stopped purchasing it.

That's something that's done in Britain. It's essentially the same as flipping someone the bird.
The (apparent) origin of the two fingered "flip off":
During the Hundred Year War between England and France, the English bowmen were the bane of the french armies. When captured by the French, the poor archers would have their first two fingers of their right hand removed, thus destroying their ability to fire a longbow. This meant soldiers who still had their fingers had never been in a losing battle and would show this with the happy geture of the "two fingered flip-off".
Its a defiant gesture by definition but is used more like the US "bird" in recent times.

Hey, folks. I just *had* to dig this thread back up because I was just reading the vol. 2 Authority hardcover... I think it was the first issue that Seth showed up in. Guess what The Midnighter said to him...
What the heck, I'll just show you.
