I'm seeing the words "redemption", "familiar face" and "former cop" floated around. Given how many fans of the expanded Gotham City mythos are on these boards, I was wondering if you guys had any thoughts.
In a weird way, I think Jim Harper (aka Guardian in the Superman books) might be an interesting choice given that both he and Azrael have Mark Shaw Manhunter ties now. It seems Harper is being setup as the head of the Science Police in the super-books but it might be a neat swerve if we're just being reintroduced to him to set him up as Azrael. I salivate at the weird possibilities of a Jim Harper Azrael with a twisted, apocalyptic Newsboy Legion.
But I have this nutty feeling he may be Crispus Allen. The guy has had some facetime as the Spectre, giving him a literal angelic connection. Gotham could use more African American champions and Allen worked better in Gotham than he has as the Spectre. I could see Crispus being resurrected by the Order of St. Dumas which could play out in a good way dramatically while freeing up the Spectre some. (The Spectre's shorts seem silly enough buy the shorts and goatee are just too much for me anyway.)
I'll be pretty mortified if it turns out to be Harvey Bullock and if it's Maggie Sawyer, this whole thing will scream Bendis' Ronin.
