View Full Version : X-Title Awards 2008 - The 'I Have Suffered' Award
The Sword Is Drawn
01-06-2009, 08:38 AM
And so we reach what should probably be considered the most fanboy category of these award. The I Have Suffered award is an award for the one character you, as a fan, feel has been made to suffer the most, not been given a chance to shine, or just plain didn't get what you would consider to be a fair deal, during 2008.
Nominations wise there were four clear candidates here, and three characters who all tied for the fifth slot in the poll. So, there's a grand total of seven put-upon options for you to pick from. They are:
Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) : There was a time where Kurt was leading his own team, sure of his own ability, and a valued member of any squad he associated with. Not any more. One poster referred, in the nominations thread, to Kurt having become 'Fuzzy Blue Wallpaper'. And in many ways he has. Practically relegated to team clergyman (As is always fallen back on when writers run out of ideas), and feeling as if Pixie's newly granted teleportation has made him redundant, Kurt is possibly soon to be leaving the X-Men. His swash is no longer allowed to buckle, and he hasn't had a chance to charm anybody in far too long. Poor fuzzy elf.
Poitr Rasputin (Colossus) : Another member of the all-new all-different team to have suffered this year. Often accused of only being given anything to say or do when Kitty was directly in his vicinity, Poitr then suffered the blow of losing his darling Katya, and finding an X-Men team unwilling to help him find his sister in Limbo. Half the year he had nothing to do. The other half he wouldn't do very much because he was grieving. Now that's suffering for you.
Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) : What more need I say. She's dead. Only she's not. Only she is. Only she's floating in a giant phasing bullet in space. So she's as good as dead. Joss Whedon had a near monopoly on Kitty's use while he write Astonishing. So many had hoped when he left she'd get to do a bit more in the greater X-Universe. Sadly not. Damn you WHEDON! (Shakes fist)
Julian Keller (Hellion) : So a year ago Julian was a big deal. He was a the forefront of the highest selling satellite title (New X-Men), was having a very genuinely touching (kind of) relationship with x23, and had put a lot of the 'I'm a villain waiting to happen' mentality behind him. He'd come a long way and gained a fair number of fans. Then Messiah Complex happened... Julian gets gravely injured, and spends the rest of the event on his death bed. If that wasn't bad enough Emma Frost has him moved to a hotel room, and abandons him there. He never received a call to rejoin the new setup in San Francisco. Instead, he illogically went off to try and join up with Magneto, who turned him down. That whole story made very little sense. He's been in limbo ever since.
Rogue : Pre-Messiah Complex - Had her own team and was at the centre of a lot of the lead up into the event. After Messiah-Complex. Just plain disappeared. Eventually turned up in X-Men Legacy. But as far as 2008 was concerned she was just dropped, without explanation.
Alison Blaire (Dazzler) : Started the year stuck on New Excalibur, and having improbable nookie with Pete Wisdom in X-Men: Die by the Sword. Then Longshot showed up and... nothing interesting happened. After Die by the Sword Dazzler went out into limbo. She returned to the pages of Uncanny recently, and at least she's dropped Claremont's biker girl styling. But is she actually doing anything, there? Other than standing in the background?
Elizabeth Braddock (Psylocke) : In the 90s Psylocke was an A-Lister. Now she's stuck in a book set outside the main Marvel Universe, playing through tired rehashes of past stories, and ultimately doing nothing of worth. She's still not back in her real body. She's still not got her real powers back. She's still in Chris Claremont's hands. The title which created her (Captain Britain) gets brought back in a big way, with a huge amount of coverage from Marvel and a decent writer at the reigns. But Betsy's not allowed to be part of any of that. She's got to be Lady Mandarin, or whatever, on a book which going downhill fast...
So there you have it. 7 poor, put upon, mucked up, souls awaiting your choice. What will yours be? You have until the end of the month to vote.
Over to you...

What the hell? No Sage again? NO ONE has suffered more than she has!
Psylocke is on this list? She's a victim. If she had trained to be a competent fighter, then maybe she wouldn't have been kicked out of the X-Books.
Who is Hellion?

I don't even know.
3 of my 80's girls all screwed over. I liked Hellion, he was fun. Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Shadowcat, egh, not so much, not horrible but not my favorites.
But Betsy's my favorite out of all and I think most screwed over since....it's CLAREMONT. And Betsy holds a special place in my heart. So I vote Psylocke.

He started out as a bully but no one took him seriously because he was not threatening in the slightest. After that he resorted to complaining about everything and even the writers couldn't deal with him, so he only appeared in the background of some one-shots.

Hellion, for the majority of the New X-Men.
Second is Kitty, third is Rogue.
Psylocke had a bad year by default. Dazzler had a lame year, she just stood in the background alot and made cameo appearances despite of all the fanfare.
Nightcrawler and Colossus fans shouldn't really be complaining (or nominating in this matter)... at least they appeared in a comic nearly every month and had decent page-time, it's not like they've been tortured and drugged repeatedly off-panel, but I know, story-wise, 2008 wasn't the best year for them.

How has Hellion suffered? He was stabbed by Deathstrike, which was his own fault. He then got told off by Magneto for acting like a berk, which was his own fault.
And then he vanished, which was joyous news.
I think the true answer for this award is Mike Carey, who had to write about Prof X, Wolverine, Daken and Juggernaut this year. With a cast like that, it's no wonder he needed Miss Sinister to appear and elevate the stories.

It really does suck to be Colossus, but I believe being being briefly reunited with your puppy love only to be betrayed by your dragon and sacrificed to oblivion in a giant bullet sucks more.

I'm shocked Kurt's not getting more votes. From Wallpapercrawler to the Secret Invasion Stupid to Priestcrawler Returns to the upcoming oneshot writeout. He's one of the most popular X-Men, yet he's been handled the worst for quite awhile now... actually, maybe that's it? Kurt's 2008 suffering doesn't stand out as it's basically standard procedure at this point for the character?

Rogue. She's been missing despite big expectations of her involvement in last year's crossover. Plus, the people in her life really suck, except for Pulse and Cannyballz. Dazzler's also missing, despite a promised role in this year's Uncanny, but she made some major improvements in her stock and the expectations (for me, anyway) weren't as high.
Then again...Julian has been Black Panthered, but I guess that has little to do with him suffering and more to do with the suffering of everyone else.
I have sympathy for Colossus.

01-06-2009, 02:10 PM
Alison Blaire (Dazzler) : She's on tour again. Sure, the circumstances of her finances have been revealed in the previews for the current Manifest Destiny... but alas, that's how Ali is doing in '09. In '08, she's worshipped by Pixie and San Francisco, and escaped the writing of New Excalibur. I'd hardly say she suffered.
Elizabeth Braddock (Psylocke) : Other the fact that she's being written in a book that's being cancelled, and being away from Earth, Betsy seems pretty well off. She's getting hit on my Mystiq and Sabretooth, and is smooching Morph when time permits. Okay, maybe they're not exactly the greatest of suitors, but Betts seems to be making the most of her time, and not suffering.
Rogue : She's been away from her family in the X-Men, but its by choice. She's confronting her demons... but hasn't been tormented by them. Limbo, as it would be, is better than what some of the rest of the list has going right now.
Julian Keller (Hellion) : Similar to Rogue, really. It sucked for the kid to get telepathically knocked out by Emma Frost, and ditched at his parents house. That's rough, when your most influential adult shrugs you off like that. But compared to last year, when he got skewered, I think he's doing pretty well. His '07 was really worse than '08.
Kurt Wagner (Nightcrawler) : Okay, started out the year with wounds from Messiah CompleX. A little rough. But being mentally screwed over by a Skrull artifact, then slowly marginilized by Pixie until she stabs you with her Soul Dagger, and Scott and Emma voice displeasure over your chapel, that no one visits? Rough.
Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat) : Okay, she got stuck in a giant bullet in space. That's pretty rough. But it's who she left behind that I'm worried about.
Piotr Rasputin (Colossus) : Okay, his girlfriend was lost in the magic space bullet. He's had a run-in with the same SOB who extorted his dad, and gave him all sorts of bad childhood memories. Oh, and he's also coming unglued about his kid sister, who he can't find a way to save from a demonic realm. He and Dr. Doom should form a support group. Oh, and did I mention his team leader pretty much told him, in light of all this stuff, to "Get over it"? It's Colossus. That's all.

I mean come on, she was injected with Strain 88, had her entire mind/personality warped by The Hecatomb, saw her hand-picked team either fall apart or betray her completely, her plan to keep Raven close to her as to keep an eye on her backfired, and she had yet another falling out with Remy.

Kitty was so well treated by Whedon at the start and now the way she was thrown in the dark (in both senses) annoys me.
She is one of my favourite X-Men, especially written by CC/Byrne (read somewhere that she was created by Byrne, not Claremont), then just CC in X-Men, and by CC and later Davis in Excalibur.
I currently prefer her Ultimate version written by Bendis.
What's the big problem with her and Peter being together? (Both Peters in both universes  )
So she actually suffers in both the MU and the UU.

being on a mediocre team and not getting attention is not suffering
It seems people have different definitions of "suffering". To some, it means plot-driven suffering, while, to others, it means suffering as a character (being ignored, written badly etc). Kind of confusing since those two are often mutually exclusive.
