Is Hollywood really that empty of ideas they are re-making...footloose?

Is it a remake, or a film adaptation of the Broadway musical adaptation of the film?

You know, I don't know. I just saw that Footloose was scheduled to be released in 2010.

Is broadway really that empty of ideas?

um, yeah.

Let's see now, what's been on Broadway the last few years?

Revivals of A Raisin in the Sun (starring P. Diddy); 42nd Street; A Streetcar Named Desire; After the Fall; Barefoot in the Park; Big River; Cabaret; Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; Chicago; Dinner at Eight; Fiddler on the Roof; Glengarry Glen Ross; Gypsy; Into the Woods; Les Miserables; Man of La Mancha; Noises Off; Oklahoma; On Golden Pond; Our Town; Pacific Overtures; Sweet Charity; The Boys From Syracuse; The Caine Mutiny Court Martial; The Glass Menagerie; The Miracle Worker; The Odd Couple; Thoroughly Modern Millie; Twelve Angry Men; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; Blithe Spirit; Equus; Grease; Hair; Hedda Gabler; Pal Joey; South Pacific; West Side Story; Waiting for Godot....

Stage adaptations of movies including The Lion King; Beauty and the Beast; the Little Mermaid, La Cage Aux Folles; The Producers; Young Frankenstein; Fame; Footloose; Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; Enchanted April; Steel Magnolias; Never Gonna Dance; The Full Monty; The Graduate; Urban Cowboy; Sunset Boulevard; 9 to 5; Billy Elliott; Grease (the current production uses songs from the movie that weren't in the original Broadway play); Hairspray; Mary Poppins; Shrek; Spamalot; Guys and Dolls...

Musicals "inspired" by the work of a musician or band, such as Movin' Out (Billy Joel); Good Vibrations (Brian Wilson); Jersey Boys (Four Seasons); Mamma Mia! (Abba); Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)...

A huge number of one-person shows by dozens of performers including Whoopi Goldberg, John Leguizamo, and Will Farrell...

And a few new plays and musicals like Avenue Q, Wicked (based on a book), Urinetown...

So, yeah, mostly, they are that empty of ideas. Or more likely they are afraid to take any chances, so everythign that makes it to the stage has to have previously been successful in some other format.

It's a remake of the film with Zac Efron attached to star..its been in the works for over a year now but they have yet to really start production.

The original is cracktastically good, mostly because of the soundtrack. Some bad eighties stuff but "Holding out for a Hero" was so good, they went and used it in Shrek 2.

It's saved, though, by making the Reverend character three-dimensional, instead of being just the 'evil business person.'

And lots of Kevin Bacon looking pretty. (And Lori Singer, too. Whatever happened to her?)

Wha...? That's got to be even more unnecessary than the HALLOWEEN remake.

I really, really wish there was some sort of legal moritorium on remakes, and particularly on those of films done less than 50 years ago.

I'm tempted to give "The Producers" a pass though for two reasons: 1) Mel Brooks did BOTH the movie and the musical. 2) It works BETTER as a musical than it did as a movie. The story always DID have a Broadway satire at the heart of it and the satire works ten times better when it's actually ON Broadway!

As for the rest though... When they hit "The Little Mermaid" on Broadway I threw up in my mouth a little bit. I mean... honestly... most of the cast are on WHEELIES for the underwater sequences. I'll repeat that... WHEELIES!!!!!

As much as I love RoboCop, I'm not upset about a remake getting made, because it's Darren Aronofsky. Also, the movie is a bit dated. I just can't imagine anyone in the title role but Peter Weller. He's too awesome to replace.

A Footloose remake is like the planned Red Dawn remake though. I have no particular attachment to the originals. I just can't imagine them existing outside of the 80s.

And I have to defend Broadway for a minute. There are new musicals out there, and many of them are very good, but no one goes to see them. Even the most successful productions are rarely profitable, and those are always revivals and musical adaptations of films. With roughly 70% of the current shows closing (including monster hits like Spamalot and Young Frankenstein), putting on any musical is a risky venture.

And worse yet, it was a TV series!

And, seriously, a Footloose remake is no huge surprise. If you look back over the past, oh, 8 years, there have been TONS of remakes:

Hairspray
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
King Kong
Bourne Identity
Hills Have Eyes
Dawn of the Dead
Halloween
Flicka
Fun with Dick and Jane
I am Legend
War of the Worlds
The Day the Earth Stood Still

THAT'S just off the top of my head, too!

The last movie version of "Hairspray" however was again a movie made of the Broadway musical that had been based on the original movie.

Also, like "The Producers", "Hairspray" was something that ended up working ten times better as a musical than it did as a movie AND the musical again had the full creative input of the movie's original writer and director -- John Waters.

I've always said that a lot of Waters' movies were wannabe musicals. Look at "Cry Baby" -- that a musical disguised as a movie but it really isn't fooling anyone.

Well, "Cry Baby" was, at least partially, a spoof of Elvis movies, none of which were musicals per se, but had a lot of songs. And "Cry Baby" also got made into a Broadway musical, but I don't think it did well.

I dunno -- I'd classify most Elvis movies as musicals. I think I recall movies like "Blue Hawaii" even being in the 'Musicals' section of my video rental store once upon a time.

I didn't know "Cry Baby" had been attempted as a musical though. I suppose it was killed by it's lack of Johnny Depp.

I guess they would be musicals. I tend to think of them more as movies with musical numbers. To me a musical is where the music is actually part of how the story is told, but in the generic sense, they're musicals.

I'm sure the lack of Johnny Depp didn't help "Cry Baby," but the fact that it's not as family friendly, with a positive message, as "Hairspray" probably didn't help either.

As musicals have gone on in recent years I've found that fewer and fewer of them seem to follow this rubric. There have been musicals where I've listened to the soundtrack and, sure, they were good songs but I couldn't have told you what the story was about or who any of the characters were from the songs along.

Part of it, I think, came from that period of time where musicals were on a downslide in popularity and people made fun of them BECAUSE of the characters in them suddenly bursting into song and dance to explain the story. So writers and producers seemed to react to this by trying to make the musicals seem less forced. The result was stuff that, sure, sounded okay but as technical musical theatre, sucked a bit.

Highway to the Danger Zone is from Top Gun.

And if they have another scene with half-naked good looking men playing volleyball, then I could definitely get behind a remake of it.

Footloose is a pretty bad song. Some of the others aren't too bad.

"Wicked" is practically the opposite. There's very little dialog in the show, practically the entire plot is carried by the songs.

In terms of plot, internal logic, characters, dialogue and acting, Footloose might be one of the worst "big" movies of all-time.

So remaking it makes sense, given that there's nowhere to go but up, presumably.

Hell, it worked for Ocean's Eleven.

Blasphemy !

It's not really a remake, it just references the film extensively in an attempt to convince the audience that they're watching a good movie. The lead character essentially spends a lot of time digitally cosplaying as Rick, only without all of the other characters, and far less interesting.

It's sad that such a good actor as Raul Julia had is career bookended by two truly awful films.

depends on your opinion of the 1960 Ocean's Eleven. i think Soderbergh's remake kind of lost the plot - the original was basically footage of the Rat Pack goofing off in Vegas and getting paid for it. it was fun, it was silly, it was in no way believable. and that's how it was intended, really. the remake thought far too much of itself, and spent far too much time and money on trying to make you believe the plot.

The thing about the original Ocean's 11 was that it could get away with being what it was because it was the Rat Pack. As famous as Clooney and company are, they're no Frank, Sammy and Dino.
