View Full Version : top comics characters who are supposed to be sexy, but aren't!

so, since there's so many "sexy" character threads running, how about this:
what characters do you think aren't sexy, even though they're obviously meant to be?
my top pick would be Jim Balent's Tarot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarot:_Witch_of_the_Black_Rose).
don't get me wrong, i get the book every month and enjoy it. but it's mainly because i'm laughing so hard. it's supposed to be T&A, but instead it's comedy gold.
i mean, i know the gal's supposed to be a supernatural powerhouse, but what's sexy about back problems? really? and goofy hyper-sexualized situations in every issue?
no images, 'cause i couldn't find any even remotely SFW.

I never understood the fanboys drooling over Rogue, Jean Grey. Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and Black Canary.
When they´re well drawn, they´re pretty, yes, but they just never clicked with me.

Jean Grey I could see.
But southern accents and Harley's quasi-Jersey accent are a big turn off for me.
I'm an accentist anyway. I pretty much like British, Irish, Neutral Midwestern, Canadian and Californian. I can deal with southern "city" accents. But I've never been terribly into anything exotic as far as attraction goes.
I'd have a problem with a person REFUSING to date somebody because of their accent, origins, race, etc.
But realistically, my "type" is mostly brunette Anglo/Celtic/Jewish girls with clear or at least lyrical diction. Oddly enough, I think blond women are insanely attractive in any kind of still image, less attractive in moving pictures and rarely people I find to be attractive in person. Which isn't to say I've never crushed on a black girl with a thick accent but if we're talking types, I like women with radio-clear voices and freckles.
I dunno why anybody's attracted to what they are.
I've never understood the "big booty" thing and certain uber-thin people creep me out... And yet I've definitely crushed on some huskier women as well as some beanpole women... and I've had both reactions with total strangers so there's probably some subtle thing that I'm drawn to, even aside from personality, which is a big factor.

A lot of the Wildstorm/Top Cow ilk, especially Witchblade and Fathom. Fathom just looks freakish and while being mostly naked is a plus, Sara Pezzini's covered in that stuff the xenos from Aliens make their cocoons out of. That shit isn't sexy.

Really? I always thought the movie aliens -- and most depictions of demons for that matter -- are totally sexy in a creepy kind of way.
I think I was scarred by seeing V at a young age. Not sure if it's Jungian or what but I used to have dreams that anyone I was attracted to was a lizard person and so was I.
Then again, I've been lucid dreaming since I was six or so and my dreams are just plain weird with things like 4D sensations and miscast people. Still, I chalk that lizard thing up to the oft mentioned "reptilian hind brain".

I wouldn't have a problem with it. If you're not attracted to someone because of whatever it is, it's best not to date them.

In the comics, Poison Ivy can be sort of sexy (though that's downgraded a bit for me by the fact that she's sort of a member of the plant kingdom and, y'know, the poison thing....)
But I always found the Uma Thurman portrayal of Poison Ivy in Batman and Robin to be the opposite of sexy, despite being hyper-sexualized. I always figured that portrayal scratched some sort of itch for most people that I didn't happen to share, but actually it seems like my opinion is shared by the vast majority.

Yeah, his entire mini series kept mentioning how much the ladies loved his looks. And in one of those very first X-Men minis (I think X-Men vs Fantastic Four) Kitty Pryde is all aflutter about how much he reminds her of (chuckle) Simon Lebon of Duran Duran.

I second this. Never found her to be sexy. I don't think I find her attractive because I've been traumatized by that god-awful (and truth be told it is god-awful) Frank Quitely illustration of her that Wizard Magazine kept showing over and over again back during Morrison's run on the X-Men. Ew!
As for who else, I don't like depictions of super big-breasted women, like Power Girl. Still, I don't mind women with breasts like Fathom.

I thought that was part of Longshot's powers, that women find him attractive. I kind of get the Longshot appeal though, especially for the 80s. He's very dated now, and needs a new haircut.

I'll admit to falling for the Gambit appeal, crappy Claremont accent and all. I have my reasons, but in retrospect, yeah, I can see the cheese factor was there all along. I just wish he'd get a better stylist or something, because his costumes are hit or miss with me.

I liked Gambit in the 90s, but I don't know that I was ever particularly attracted to him. I mostly just liked Rogue, and she loved him, so I was interested in him by default. Why exactly? While accents are an odd reason not to date someone Everything else on the list seems like a perfectly valid reason to turn down a date with someone. I'm not prejudice at all but I would have a huge problem dating and marrying someone of a different race, religion or ethnic upbringing.

I fail to see how that's anything but prejudice. You're literally prejudging a whole group of people. It's one thing to have a "type," but it's quite another thing to say that you could never be attracted to ANYONE of a particular race, ethnicity, or religion. Without even knowing them, let alone having met them, let alone having even laid eyes on them. That's pretty much the textbook definition of prejudice.

And she fails miserably, Balent tries way to hard, I did like his design for catwoman, but even there he tries to hard.
For me I have to say Ivy in Soul Calibur IV, her oufit is horrible, I think Namco should have left it alone at II. Of course one of the great things about that game is that her atire is completely customizable.
Prejudice is judging them based on that; all he's saying is he's not attracted to that.
No, that's not what he's saying. He said he'd have a "huge problem" dating them. But even if he meant what you said, I still consider that prejudice. How can you definitively say that you can never be attracted to ANYONE with skin color different than your own, unless you happen to have seen every single person of another race who has ever existed? You can't. Therefore, it's prejudice.

Skin color I'll give you, but I don't think it's unreasonable for a hardcore Catholic to not want to date a hardcore Muslim - no matter how tolerant they were of each other, they would just conflict too much.

Being attracted to someone is one thing.
Being willing to marry and put children through the stigma of having parents of separate races with different upbringing that might cause arguments in the home or cause grand parents and other relatives to treat them badly is something completely different.

You do realize that the same argument is being used against gay adoption and gay parenting?
Look, your kids are likely to get bullied at some point. For their glasses, their weight, their good grades, their taste in music. If you instill in them the pride to believe in themselves and stand up for their rights, if you raise them with the trust that they will come to you and others and talk about the bullying, then they won't be bullied for long.
And grandparents who would treat their grandchildren like that do not deserve contact with them. But I also think you underestimate how much family ties trump old racism and prejudice sometimes.

Emma looks fine if Greg Land or Alex Maleev are drawing (or tracing her or w/e). But she doesn't look like a rich woman who spends alot of money on her looks when most other artists are handling her. Most artists kind of draw her like a porn star, whom btw are mostly all really gross from my very limited knowledge. Maybe not in the way she carries herself, but in her looks, hair and everything else. The badly dyed, flat hair, the trimmed and penciled, gross eyebrows.

So you're saying you think she looks less like a porn star when Greg Land draws her? That's an unusual reaction...
Emma looks fine in the last couple of Uncanny issues, but that's because she's being drawn by Terry Dodsons. The Dodsons can't make a woman not look sexy. She's still Emma Frost though, and I just find the character sort of inherently unattractive now. (And if she says "darling" one more time I am going to find a way into the comic, like it's an Ah Ha video, and punch her in the face.)

It's easy when you've made an entire carreer tracing Adam Hugues.
Anyway, my post says it all. Just google up adult videos or w/e if you want to know what a porn star really looks like. And you'll know what I mean. Most of the actresses all have that dodgy face, the hair that looks like crap and the ugly pencilled eyebrows. People doing porn are usually pretty gross to look at.

Those are silly arguments that seem pretty born of misinformation or xenophobia.
Naturally, serious religious/ideological differences will be a barrier for a really compatible relationship, but those can exist between people of the same race. There's no reason to assume you will automatically be incompatible with someone from a different race.

I try to forget Milligan's run. But I would assume he had her copy the knowledge of that kind of stuff from actual experts, right? That's a common trick for psychic characters. Please don't tell me he wrote her as simply knowing that stuff on her own cause that would be terrible.
Anyway, I think as a character Emma's been one of the best and most interesting characters in the X-books for some time. She's one of the key reasons to read them in the first place, IMO.
I can get not liking her or not finding her attractive, though. What I don't get is how someone can look at an actual well-drawn picture of her and think "gross".

I'll see your Tarot and Black Ivy and raise you The Girls Of Eiken.
I appreciate a nice-looking bosom, but yeesh.

People always forget that Fabes had Cable pass the bar exam in X-Force.
Whose to say Emma didn't?

I think John Byrne meant this to be sexy, in a sort of 'taboo breaking' way. Instead it's just weird and disturbing....
What did Dark Wanda do to Wonderman? (http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/6775855.html)

I never got Oracle. I love the character and she may be Ostrander’s most significant creation which is saying something as I’m a HUGE fan of Ostrander especially his wholly original Star Wars creations. But Oracle always seemed like a cross of a Liberian meets your mother. Then again I was introduced to the character when I was a kid so that might have something to do with it.

Get back in the trunk.
But Oracle always seemed like a cross of a Liberian meets your mother.
What have you got against Liberians?

I've made worse typos.
The Dodsons can't make a woman not look sexy.
No one draws a man trapped in a sexy women's body quite like Dodson...

I miss that comic, hard as hell to find issues of it anymore. :frown:

Wonder Woman. Is Grecian so she could pass for Assyrian and looks like a family member.
I'm also going to add Supergirl. I just don't see the appeal of the character unless you a young teen. It always creeps me out when you have adult men talking about how much they love the character and I'm what you call a creepy mother *censored*.

I think it depends on their definition of "love".
For instances, I like Supergirl the same way I like poneys, bunnies, puppies, kittens and kids.
I like Batgirl the same way I like tuna sandwiches, Zhang Ziyi, vanilla chocolat, Jenniffer Jason Leigh in Heart of Midnight or Smurfette.
If she was a fucking ninja.
And I like Wonder Woman the same way I like Modesty Blaise, Sophia Loren, Comanche, Iman and Laureline.
