There's also Faith, the Vampire Slayer, whom I still think is sexy even in her comic book incarnation.

Hey, that's Darna!

Yes indeed! I recently found the Darna-centric website. Fun stuff! She dates back to 1950 or so.

Now, here's what I'm wondering: if the Filipinos can get fourteen Darna movies out over a 56 year span, and a TV series, why can't we manage ONE Wonder Woman movie in the U.S.?

Show business has a different reaction in the Philippines, as do comics and movies of that nature. There's also a budget issue (we just want the movie made, Americans want it made WELL), and the first movie was such a hit that it just franchised off. On top of that, Darna's pretty much our number one superhero, and Diana is not yours.

Fun stuff: Darna wasn't meant to be based off of Wonder Woman, but a female version of Captain Marvel. She even has the whole "mortal turns into superhero" motif going, and her color scheme actually reflects that. It's just that you can't have a powerful woman like that with headgear and not harken back to Diana in some way.

Still--FOURTEEN MOVIES FOR DARNA. One major movie for Wonder Woman? ZERO.

The Marcos regime notwithstanding, one possible way your country is superior to the U.S.?

Oh yeah! The Captain Marvel stuff is all there: the powers of gods with the utterance of a single word; child/teen-instantly-becomes-adult; similar power set; exotic origins & enemies. Browsing the Darna pages, her mythos looks pretty neat! Nifty Nestor Redondo art, the tone of the art & stories even reminded me of classic Shazam fare. I wish there was a TPB of Ravelo's work translated into English. :frown:

Another fun fact: Mars based Darna in part on his own mom. She raised him alone, and he was inspired by her personal strength so much he "made her" into a superhero. Quite touching!

I think we've got no one but DC and Warners to blame for that. Their movies seem to be "Hey, here's Superman. Here's Batman. Here's a bunch of other guys you've barely heard of. No Flash. No Lantern. No Diana."

There was a Darna series rereleased a few years ago, with higher production values (which aren't very high in comparison to DC, Marvel, and Fantagraphics stuff), and it wasn't very good. It's also difficult for anyone to try to do anything with Filipino characters since comics is such a global market. Why should Leinil Yu and Alfredo Alcala and Whilce Portacio draw Darna when they could be drawing Wolverine and getting paid in dollars?

I wonder if he'd still think that if he ever saw Angel Locsin dress up as her (http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m228/jeka_matukmo/darna/GMAAngelDarna50.jpg).

Oh, I blame them. I blame them with much prejudice and exhaustion of the "World's Finest". DC has other heroes in their toybox with almost as much history, who can be just as interesting. I've wanted a Wonder Woman movie forever. I'd support a Flash or Green Lantern movie. Not all of us lose our shit over a S-Shield or Bat.

Yeah, I could see the artist's angle. Wolverine is more lucrative. I still thought Orosco's piece was lovely. Does the rest of his art hold up to the Darna still? I wonder if Mango could find a niche in the U.S. to translate their work and send it over?

Not unless Mars Ravelo was prone to Oedipal thoughts about mama. Even then, I doubt she looked like THAT! LOL

The art in the last series was pretty solid, clear storytelling, but just nothing too dynamic. I think it suffered from being too clear that it almost felt two-dimensional.

It was also in English, so no translations would be necessary.

But much like Supreme would only sell because of Alan Moore's name, Darna would only sell in the international market if a big-name creator was working on her.

Are they available for purchase overseas? Would I be able to get the Mango run?

Maybe an Alan Davis, ChrisCross, Christopher Priest, or Jerry Ordway could bring the property to the states? However, I wouldn't want them to "Americanize/Britishize" them. I'd want the characters to remain Filipino, with that perspective intact. A smart writer could pull it off--and I think an Alan Davis or ChrisCross--or Phil Jiminez--Darna would ROCK!

Because we're afraid of the precise thing that makes Darna so popular to begin with: she's sexy as hell.

Edit: I should be working on a paper for finals, but I've been watching Darna episodes on YouTube all morning. This is just excellent TV.

Gail can push for t if she´s interested, but this is the sort of stuff that is up to the main boss and his interest in cross-company events.

Darna may be well known in the Philipines but in the US she´s a nobody, so the bottom line comes into play.

Holy crap, I think I'm suddenly remembering I had a crush on her back as a kid.

Anyway, as for my favorite non-Marvel, non-DC sexy fictional character, hands down it will forever and always be her:

http://www.dfsm.org/layouts/games/Chun-Li%204.jpg

Yeah, everyone knows Chun-Li, but yeah, she's still sexy to me. Indeed, what I like about her sexiness (which I think is somewhat exemplified in this picture) is that it's really subtle. Of course, it can be overt at times, a la the infamous shower scene from Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie, which truth be told alerted me to how sexy Chun can be  . Still, I find that the sexiest depiction of Chun is right after that scene and before her fight with Vega, when she's just wearing a yellow shirt and not much else. Then and there, one sees this really interesting contrast. You wouldn't think that this simple looking woman is one of the strongest fighters in the world.
