Sorry to be asking so many questions about Superman comics but for some reason (since picking up Action Comics 855 through present) Superman has become my favorite character...now I'm sort of addicted to buying back issues of Action Comics and Superman comics.
Anyway...I've gone back and gotten issues 650 through present of Superman comics and noticed that prior to 650 the title was Adventures of Superman.
Was the Adventures of Superman a quality title?
Would issues from around 600 to 649 be worth picking up for about $1.25 an issue?
If they're not "Superman" quality reads then I'm not going to bother. Thanks.

If I remember it right, I think that was Greg Ruckas run with Blackrock and Ruin. I thought it was pretty bad actually. Not as bad as his short run on Supergirl though. But your mileage may vary as they say.

I have every single issue of AOS and I'd say 600-623, because I hated Rucka's run. Joe Casey's run was underrated and there are some fun old school moments (like Superman heating the entire earth with his heat vision from space) And bear in mind there are a few crossovers early on but they're pretty good (The Neverending Battle, Return To Krypton). But I wouldn't pay more than a $1 if that much.

Man, the problem with answering these kinds of questions is that there have been so many runs over the years that it's hard to really give a definite answer. I remember Kark Kessel's run back in the 90s being very good and as for Joe Casey's stuff while I wasn't all that fond of the stories he had some amazing artists working with him. I'm talking here specifically of Karl Kerschl and the great and sadly missed Mike Wieringo.

Casey was alright early on, but after a while (around when Derec Donovan came aboard as penciller)... I dunno what happened, but it was like he was constantly trying to prove how clever or quirky he was. And unless maybe you're at a MASTER-level of craftsmanship (or on a slightly more appropriate project), that gets old in a real hurry. Issue #600's at least worth it for Mike Wieringo's much-missed artwork, and the old extra-sized anniversary issue conventions like special-guest features (such as mini-strips in the back by Loeb/Sale, Schultz/Gibbons, Kelly/Meglia; pin-ups by J.H. Williams III, John Cassaday, Chris Bachalo, J. Scott Campbell, etc.) I do remember a pretty good 2-parter with Legion foe The Persuader in #601 & 602, though (with a prelude in #598). Pete Woods did the art on that one, as Wieringo had moved on to Marvel & the FF as of #600's end.
Rucka ultimately had a similar fall in quality. I recall him saying somewhere at the time of how most Superman tales seem to have him just fighting a guy in a power-suit in the end, because he's so hard to truly challenge... but the funny thing is, is that's kind of exactly how his run turned out [Sigh].
Sorry I can't be of more help here.

Adventures Of Superman came about because in 1986, the original Superman title was given a rename and a second volume was launched using just the name Superman. Though the books are $1.25-$1.50, doesn't mean that they aren't bad. Not every book comes in at $5.00 or more. I'd say Rucka's run is worth reading. Casey's run is hit and miss.

It doesn't seem like the Adventures of Superman would be worth picking up according to comments here and some reviews of several issues I've read.
Would I be better off just taking $15 of that money and buying the 'Superman: Birthright' run off comics?
Thanks.

Um... yeah, I think so. I for one really like (most of) Birthright.

Thanks for the link....how do I find out which issues of which title each of those story lines appear?
I'd prefer to get the individual comics compared to a TPB...just a more enjoyable read for me...of course assuming I can find a run of comics with all the issues needed.
Thanks.

There is a list of issues that was released for each year dating back to 1986 and "Man Of Steel". It also lists the comics that are part of a TPB.

This depends on how hardcore a Superman fan you are. For example, are you like me, where I'm such a fan I never miss an episode of smallville, despite sometimes the show not being so spectacular? Do you find yourself enjoying things most Superman fans don't?
If so, then I'd say pick up anything after 1994 ish.
